Texas Tech hosts Transfer of Reins, Passing of Guns for mascots
Texas Tech University named Rose Rosas as the 64th Masked Rider and bid farewell to Sydney Caro as Raider Red, marking a symbolic transition in mascot leadership during the Transfer of Reins and Passing of Guns ceremony Friday.
Both students leave lasting legacies, with Rosas breaking ground as a first-generation student and passionate animal science major, and Caro having made more than 300 appearances as Raider Red, according to a news release from Tech. The transition in mascot leadership comes ahead of the 2025-26 season.
Rosas, a junior animal science major from Brady, becomes the 64th Masked Rider in the 71-year tradition.
Her passion for animals developed from a young age but wasn't truly realized until a chance encounter in a high school agriculture class.
'I didn't grow up in a traditional ag background around horses,' Rosas said. 'It really started off with livestock and showing livestock.
'When we moved to Brady, I was fortunate enough to have an amazing ag teacher, Brad Barnett, who introduced me to Mike Probst, the person who truly got me started with horses and cattle. They both have become honorary dads to me, and I owe much of the knowledge and experience I have today to them.'
Rosas, a first-generation college student, took over the reins of Centennial Champion from Ellie Brown on Friday.
She has served as an assistant under Brown the past season as well as the 62nd Masked Rider Lauren Bloss.
'I would love to give back in my role as a Rider to the (Texas Tech) university and hopefully leave a lasting impact from my year and most importantly, leave the program better than where I found it.'
Spirit Program Director Stephanie Rhode has led the program for the last 22 years. She said she is thrilled to see Rosas in the saddle.
'Rose has shown her tremendous devotion to the Masker Rider Program over the past few years, and I look forward to seeing her take the reins as our 64th Masked Rider,' said Rhode.
Much like the Masked Rider, Raider Red said goodbye to one of the talented students donning the signature red mustache and hat. Raider Red, as a physical mascot was created by Saddle Tramp Jim Gaspard inspired from the artwork of late artist Dirk West in 1971.
Sydney Caro, a member of the High Riders and a dual biology and Chinese major, will be moving on from the program to finish her degree with graduation set for spring 2026.
'Being Raider Red has been one of the greatest honors of my lifetime,' said Caro. 'Time really does fly when you love what you do! Though I'll be retiring the big black boots, I will always carry the immense passion, tremendous love, and the lasting impact this experience has given me close to my heart.'
According to Texas Tech Cheer & Mascot Coach Bruce Bills, Caro has attended and appeared as Raider Red 310 times in her two years as part of the program.
'Sydney has been the glue to keep the group together, keep us on task, always eager to take on appearances and being ready for last minute events,' added Bills.
'It has been pleasure working with Sydney and we know she will do great things in her next chapter.'

Comedian Jeff Ross Reveals Shocking Reason Tom Brady Agreed to Do Netflix Roast
It was just revealed why Tom Brady agreed to participate in Netflix's live roast of him - and the reason might surprise you. Comedian Jeff Ross, who cohosted the Roast of Tom Brady in May 2024 alongside Kevin Hart, shared during a Wednesday, June 26 appearance on The Howard Stern Show Brady's motivation for being the subject of the Netflix special. On the day of the roast, Ross asked Brady, "Why are you doing this?" According to Ross, Brady replied, "I love this kind of humor. People are too snowflaky right now," On top of that, Brady allegedly sent Ross a text that day saying: "No fear. This is what we do." The comedian also opened up about how to roast came to be, sharing that it took several years to get to the taping from when he first connected with the NFL star via Instagram. "I had seen him looking at my Instagram on Super Bowl Sunday a few years ago," Ross said. "I was like, Why the f**k is Tom Brady on my Instagram?' I go, 'Oh, I had some jokes up. Maybe that's how he unwinds before a big game.' And he f***ing wins!" It's likely that Ross is referring to Brady's Super Bowl win in 2021 as the quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, his seventh and final Super Bowl win as an NFL quarterback. "I hit him the next day on Instagram going, 'Dude, it's time for a roast. You obviously love this s**t,'" Ross continued. "He writes me back and we start talking and it turns out my agent and his agent, they work together. And we put a deal together to do a roast. Netflix is like, 'Sure!'" But just as Ross's plans were coming to fruition - Brady announced he had to decided not to retire from professional football, after previously announcing he was going to in February 2022. "He agreed and he retired and we were like, 'Let's go! Now's our chance.' Then he unretired," Ross said. "I was like, 'No, we got to wait until he's done playing. It's a little more fun.'" That opportunity came after Brady's second retirement in February 2023. However, the long-anticipated event was pushed back even more due to Brady's split from ex-wife Gisele Bündchen in October 2022 after 13 years of marriage. "Then he was going through a divorce and I'm like, 'Let's wait for that,'" Ross explained. The event featured Brady getting roasted by comedians like Nikki Glaser and Andrew Schulz, celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Ben Affleck and former New England Patriots teammates Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman. ‘A deal I couldn't pass up': Teacher sells LeBron rookie card to Tom Brady for $250K after finishing third at Fanatics Games
In a weekend filled with star power, sports challenges and high-dollar prizes, one Philadelphia high school teacher stood tall among sports legends. Matt Dennish, a teacher at Red Lion Area High School, finished third in the first-of-its-kind Fanatics Games, held during Fanatics Fest at New York City's Javits Center. The sports collecting event, created by Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin, drew more than 125,000 fans and this year featured a groundbreaking 'pros vs. joes' format. Fifty athletes and celebrities were pitted against 50 hand-selected fans in a multi-event skills showdown with nearly $2 million in prizes up for grabs. While NFL legend Tom Brady took home first place and $1 million, and UFC champion Justin Gaethje claimed second and drove off in a 2025 Ferrari 296 GTB, it was Dennish who ultimately walked away with one of the most memorable moments of the weekend. Dennish earned a rare 2003-04 Topps Chrome Gold Refractor LeBron James rookie card for his third-place finish. But during the award ceremony, Brady stunned the crowd by offering to buy the card on the spot — for $250,000 in cash, from his own prize stack. 'Backstage, I was talking to Tom,' Dennish told CNN Sports. 'I was able to meet him before going out, and he had asked me if I was a collector, and I said no. I had no idea he was going to make a deal on stage. I thought he was just having conversations.' Brady's offer was encouraged by fellow celebrity competitor Kevin Hart, who jumped in during the exchange and helped close the deal. 'Luckily, Kevin Hart stepped in, kind of was on my side, and said: 'I'll take over, I'll make you a good deal,'' Dennish said. 'And I had Justin sitting beside me, the second-place winner, and he got my ear open. 'He said: 'You're taking this deal?' I said: 'I don't know, I guess I have to see what it is.' And it just all happened so fast.' 'When I heard the number, I said: 'All right, I know the value of that card that was advertised, so it was a deal I couldn't pass up.'' Rubin himself counted out the cash live on stage, and his private security team delivered it to Dennish's Philadelphia home the following day. Brady also threw in a signed card and jersey to sweeten the deal. The Fanatics Games tested participants across eight sports-themed events, including quarterback accuracy, basketball shooting, soccer goal-scoring, puck shooting, UFC striking power, WWE-style entrances and a golf simulator challenge. Each competitor accumulated points throughout the three-day event, with referees scoring performances live on the Fanatics Fest main floor. Dennish made his biggest mark in the MLB pitching accuracy challenge — which he won outright over all 100 participants. 'I played until sixth grade,' he said. 'My grandfather, he played a little bit of minor leagues, so really big fans of baseball, Philadelphia Phillies fans, and my dad's really passionate about it.' He added that once he learned he'd been selected to compete, he got to work quickly. 'I went to the gym three days in a row, and my brother sat at the other end of the gym and I just got some tosses trying to get the feel back. It is pretty natural, but you know, when it comes down to the pressure of the event, you never know how you're gonna perform.' Dennish earned his spot in the competition by submitting a two-minute video showcasing his athletic skills — including footage of him sinking a once-in-a-lifetime shot. 'Last year, I'm a Philadelphia Sixers season ticket holder and had the opportunity to shoot a half-court shot and I made it. So I definitely put that in there. I think that might have helped a little bit.' As for what he plans to do with his $250,000? 'I am someone who doesn't really spend a whole lot, so it will probably be saved for the most part,' he said. 'Maybe buy a couple of little things here and there, but don't want to go crazy with it. I know it's not gonna last forever.' The money might not be life-changing, but Dennish knows he'll be walking into a very different classroom come fall. 'After that half-court shot, I got quite a bit of attention,' Dennish said. 'I didn't think that was gonna get out. It's kind of the same as this. I didn't think, unless I did place, that anybody would really know I competed in this. 'With all the attention that this event gets and Michael Rubin's phenomenal hosting and promoting and everything, footage is everywhere,' he added. 'So it is going to be a challenge going back and having to answer a lot of questions, but it'll be enjoyable, and there's a lot of teachable moments from this event.'
