
The soothing drink that could help you sleep as UK temperatures soar
In an effort to beat the heat and get some rest, people are ditching their duvets, wriggling restlessly, and even dangling a leg out of bed to stay cool.
However, there might just be a simple beverage that could transform your restless nights into peaceful slumber. Dreams' sleep expert Sammy Margo has highlighted matcha as the drink of choice, which is not only trending online but also boasts benefits beyond its social media fame, reports Surrey Live.

"In fact, some people even make low-caffeine or ceremonial-grade matcha part of their mindful evening routine to wind down gently. However, if you're sensitive to caffeine, it's best to listen to your body and consider enjoying it earlier in the day."
Research featured on PubMed extols the virtues of matcha for older adults, even those with Alzheimer's. The study indicates: "The present study suggests regular consumption of matcha could improve emotional perception and sleep quality in older adults with mild cognitive decline.
"Given the widespread availability and cultural acceptance of matcha green tea, incorporating it into the daily routine may offer a simple yet effective strategy for cognitive enhancement and dementia prevention."
Encouraging individuals to hold off on the coffee, she points out that "unlike coffee, which can sometimes upset your stomach or cause acid reflux - therefore impacting your sleep, matcha may be gentler on the tummy and less acidic. That may make it a great choice to try if you have a sensitive stomach, or find your sleep gets thrown off by digestive issues".
We all enjoy sticking to our routine as much as possible, and if that includes a morning coffee, it could be difficult to let go. However, if you experience an afternoon slump, it might be worth investigating whether your coffee is the culprit.
The sleep expert elaborated: "While coffee might give you a quick jolt of energy, it often comes with the drastic afternoon crash and can leave you feeling wired well into the evening.
"Matcha, conversely, is known to provide a smoother, more balanced boost and compared to regular tea, matcha contains a higher concentration of caffeine and antioxidants, offering a more sustained and focused energy.
"That's thanks to L-theanine, an amino acid that works alongside its gentle caffeine content to create a calm, focused energy. It may help to keep you alert without overstimulating your system, making it much easier to unwind and setting you up for a good night's sleep."
Consider swapping your regular cuppa for matcha, as it could help you dodge that dreadful afternoon slump set to hit in a few hours. And not forgetting the extra benefit: it's abundant in antioxidants, which are just the ticket for overnight recovery.
Margo pointed out that EGCG (Epigallocatechin Gallate), a potent plant compound predominantly found in green tea, "helps your body repair cells and fight inflammation". Margo added: "While it might not directly help you fall asleep, it may support your body's overnight recovery, so you may wake up feeling more refreshed and ready to take on the day."

The lead author of a new study believes "our brain's hidden sugar code could unlock powerful tools for combating dementia" Brits with a sweet-tooth might actively try to curb temptation when they feel they have been raiding the cupboards or sweetie drawer too much. However, did you know sugar could actually hold a major brain benefit? Scientists have uncovered a surprising sugar-related mechanism inside brain cells that could transform how we fight Alzheimer's and other dementias. In Scotland, an estimated 90,000 people are living with dementia, and approximately 66 per cent of those have Alzheimer's disease, according to Alzheimer's Research UK. Now, a new study from scientists at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging has revealed a surprising player in the battle against Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia - brain sugar metabolism. Published in Nature Metabolism, the research uncovers how breaking down glycogen - a stored form of glucose - in neurons may protect the brain from toxic protein build-up and degeneration. Glycogen is typically thought of as a reserve energy source stored in the liver and muscles. While small amounts also exist in the brain, its role in neurons has long been dismissed. "This new study challenges that view, and it does so with striking implications," says Professor Pankaj Kapahi, PhD, senior scientist on the study. "Stored glycogen doesn't just sit there in the brain; it is involved in pathology." The researchers discovered that in both fly and human models of tauopathy (a group of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's), neurons accumulate excessive glycogen. More importantly, this build-up appears to contribute to disease progression. But tau, the protein that clumps into tangles in Alzheimer's patients, appears to physically bind to glycogen, trapping it and preventing its breakdown. When glycogen can't be broken down, the neurons lose an essential mechanism for managing oxidative stress, a key feature in aging and neurodegeneration. By restoring the activity of an enzyme called glycogen phosphorylase (GlyP), researchers found they could reduce tau-related damage in fruit flies and human stem cell-derived neurons. "By increasing GlyP activity, the brain cells could better detoxify harmful reactive oxygen species, thereby reducing damage and even extending the lifespan of tauopathy model flies," said postdoc Sudipta Bar. Even more promising, the team demonstrated that restricting one's diet naturally enhanced GlyP activity and improved tau-related outcomes in flies. They further mimicked these effects and showed that the benefits of DR might be reproduced through drug-based activation of this sugar-clearing system. "This work could explain why GLP-1 drugs, now widely used for weight loss, show promise against dementia, potentially by mimicking dietary restriction," said Kapahi. "Work in this simple animal allowed us to move into human neurons in a much more targeted way." Kapahi says this study not only highlights glycogen metabolism as an unexpected hero in the brain but also opens up a new direction in the search for treatments against Alzheimer's and related diseases. "As we continue to age as a society, findings like these offer hope that better understanding - and perhaps rebalancing - our brain's hidden sugar code could unlock powerful tools for combating dementia," he added. Dementia warning for rugby players as quarter show red flag signs Former rugby players show a higher prevalence of brain changes linked to dementia There are ongoing legal cases in rugby league, rugby union and football involving former players A new study suggests former rugby players show a higher prevalence of brain changes linked to dementia than matched members of the general population. Levels of a protein called p-tau217, a potential sign of dementia, were higher overall (17.6 per cent) in a group of 200 retired male and female players who said they had suffered significant previous head impact exposure in their careers, compared to 33 matched controls with no exposure to head injuries. Levels of the protein – common in people with diseases like Alzheimer's – were significantly increased in 46 (23 per cent) of the player group. MRI scans also revealed former players had reduced brain volume in some areas, compared with the control group. None of the participants were found to have dementia at the time of the study, which is ongoing and being conducted by researchers at Imperial College London, University College London and the UK Dementia Research Institute. Dr Jacqui Hanley, head of research at Alzheimer's Research UK, said: 'Although none of the rugby players developed young-onset dementia during the study, they did show changes known to be linked to dementia. 'These include smaller brain volumes and higher levels of p-tau217 protein in the blood, which is common in people with diseases like Alzheimer's. It is too early to say whether these players will go on to develop dementia and whether the physical brain changes observed will predict cognitive difficulties later in their lives. 'There are also key limitations to bear in mind, such as the reliance on self-reporting and interview to determine traumatic brain injury history. However, as the study continues for another four years it should provide some insight into whether these markers in the blood and brain continue to change and how this could impact the rugby players' memory and thinking abilities.' Article continues below Previous studies have suggested a link between playing rugby and football and an increased risk of developing neurodegenerative disease, such as the FIELD Study in football, which found footballers were three-and-a-half times more likely to die of neurodegenerative disease than age-matched members of the population. There are ongoing legal cases in rugby league, rugby union and football involving former players who claim the sporting authorities failed to adequately protect them from exposure to head injuries.
