Colorado man found naked in Castle Pines field accused of stabbing woman to death, injuring another, police say

A Colorado woman is dead and another is recovering in the hospital after the Douglas County Sheriff's Office says a family member stabbed both of them in a Castle Pines apartment. The suspect in the case is now in custody and facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder.
The stabbing happened late Sunday night in the Madison Apartments at Canyons community, just west of Interstate 25 off Hess Road, the sheriff's office said on Monday.
Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly said in a news conference that the sheriff's office received a 911 call just after 11:30 p.m. about a stabbing in progress in an apartment building. Responding deputies forced their way into the apartment complex after dispatchers learned there was already at least one person who had been stabbed and then forced their way into the apartment unit after seeing blood on the ground outside the unit, Weekly said.
Deputies found one woman dead with apparent stab wounds, and another woman who was injured after having been cut or stabbed, Weekley said. Deputies rendered aid to the injured woman, and she was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. Investigators learned the suspect had fled the apartment prior to deputies' arrival, and a code red was sent to nearby residents.
The sheriff's office soon got calls from several neighbors who reported seeing the suspect, Weekly said, and deputies located 18-year-old Messiah Williams in a field about a mile south of the apartment. He was naked when he was located, but arrested without incident, the sheriff's office said.
No information was provided about the woman who died, and she'll be identified by the Douglas County Coroner's Office at a later date, but Weekly said the injured woman is 20 years old, and all three people are family members.
Williams now faces charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, and tampering with physical evidence; all felonies. He'll ultimately be formally charged by the
Court records were not yet available in this case as of Monday afternoon, and it wasn't clear if Williams has retained an attorney or when he's due in court.
Weekly lauded the deputies and credited their actions with saving the injured woman's life and went on to say that violent crimes are rare in the city of about 11,000 people. He also said there were no previous 911 calls from the apartment where the stabbings occurred.
"I can't praise their response enough for how quickly they got here, how quickly they made the decision to force entry -- not only on the exterior door, but also on the interior door -- it saved a life," he said in front of the apartment building, a broken glass door visible behind him. "I've been here for 32 years and I cannot remember the last time we had a homicide in Castle Pines."
Weekly said he doesn't believe there's an ongoing danger to the community, and investigators believe Williams was the only suspect in the stabbings.

Former 'Real Housewives' star Teddi Mellencamp's Encino home targeted in attempted burglary

Burglars attempted to break into the Encino home of former "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star Teddi Mellencamp on Monday night, just one week after "American Idol" producer Robin Kaye and her husband were shot and killed by an intruder in their Encino home. Edwin Arroyave, Mellencamp's husband, spoke about the 10:15 p.m. attempted burglary and credited the home's alarm system and security cameras for keeping his family safe, as a jimmied-open side door triggered the alarm. He said the couple was home with their four children when three men jumped their front gate. "Well, by the time we came down, they had already run out, but I just saw obviously the doors open at the house," he said. "I think they probably thought that no one was home, so I think once they realized people were home too, they left right away." The Los Angeles Police Department said by the time officers arrived at the Hayvenhurst Avenue property, the suspects had fled and nothing was taken, and nobody was hurt. Just last week, an Encino home invasion turned deadly when "American Idol" producer Robin Kaye and her husband, Thomas Deluca, were shot and killed in their home. Raymond Boodarian, 22, was arrested the following day and has been charged with two counts of murder for their deaths. Prosecutors allege that he shot the couple with a gun he found in their safe as they returned home from the grocery store. Just fifteen minutes before the Mellencamp attempted break-in Monday night, another home invasion was reported, two miles away. Police said nobody was home at the time when multiple suspects made entry to the home in the 4900 block of Enfield Avenue. The suspects had already fled when police arrived, and it is not known if anything was taken. Police are still investigating if these two incidents are connected. At nearly the same time Monday night, a community meeting was underway where Encino residents, law enforcement members, and county leaders gathered to address a troubling spike in crime in the area, highlighted by last week's deadly double-shooting. Hundreds were in attendance, including Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman, who urged residents to demand better safety in the community. Police said that violent crimes in the area are down year over year and that they welcome new ways to address community safety and expand services. They said that they have requested additional patrols, flyovers with department aircraft, and even mounted patrols.

Man convicted of killing estranged wife dies after four decades on Florida's death row

STARKE, Fla. (AP) — A man convicted of killing his estranged wife has died after spending more than four decades on Florida's death row. Robert Peede, 81, died Monday at Florida State Prison in Starke, according to Florida Department of Corrections records. His cause of death wasn't immediately reported. Peede was convicted in 1984 of murdering his estranged wife, Darla Peede, a year earlier. According to court records, Robert Peede drove from his home in North Carolina to Florida in March 1983 with the intention of making his wife return to North Carolina with him. During the drive back, Peede stopped just outside of Orlando and fatally stabbed his wife in the neck, prosecutors said. Her body was later found dumped in a wooded area of Georgia. When Peede was arrested at his home in Hillsboro, North Carolina, Darla Peede's car was parked outside. Its interior was heavily bloodstained.
