The curtains came down on the inaugural Dubai Open Table Tennis Academies Championship (DOTTA) with UAE player Mayed Nawaf Al Kaabi walking away with the crown at the ISD courts in Dubai Sports City.Organised by the Dubai Sports Council in cooperation with the UAE Table Tennis Federation and tournament operating partner ISD Dubai, the championship witnessed a full house at the ISD Table Tennis courts at Dubai Sports City.Definitely among the finds of the competition, Emirati Mayed Nawaf Al Kaabi walked away with the Under-12 category after defeating Henroy Day, while Azan Abdullah had to stay content with third place.In the Under-15 category, Abdulrahman Ganio clinched the top spot, followed by Chloe Isabel Silva in second place and Joaquim Yenigou Adriano in third place.This brand-new addition to the Dubai sporting scene aims at enhancing the Dubai Sports Council's efforts of attracting and developing emerging sports talent in keeping with its policy launched in line with the Dubai Government's directives to attract and develop talent across all sporting disciplines.This championship served as a platform to highlight emerging talent in table tennis, and witnessed strong competition and impressive skill displays across both age groups.Ahmed Salem Al Mahri, Director of the Sports Talent Management Department at the Dubai Sports Council, emphasised the importance of competitions such as the Dubai Open Table Tennis Championships in strengthening sports talent development programmes across all sports.The Council has organised similar Dubai Open Championships in football, basketball, volleyball, handball, swimming, karate, gymnastics and tennis, with great success so far. He noted that the wide participation in these championships reflects their great success and is a positive indicator for their future expansion.Al Mahri also praised the outstanding technical level witnessed in the table tennis championship, emphasising that it was an ideal platform for discovering promising talents who will form a fundamental pillar of future national teams.Diego Neves de Almeida, General Manager of ISD Dubai Sports City, emphasised that the tournament goes beyond the competitive aspect. 'The Dubai Open Table Tennis Academies (DOTTA) Championship was not just a competition; it was an opportunity to inspire young athletes and instill a love of table tennis in them. The Dubai Sports Council launches today (Friday 1st of August 2025) the 2025 edition of its annual Summer Football Tournament for youth academies, running through 13 August. The tournament is part of the Council's long-term strategy to identify, nurture, and develop young sporting talent in line with the emirate's vision for athletic excellence across all in its fifteenth edition since its inception in 2010, the summer tournament plays a vital role in preparing Dubai's youth and junior football teams for the upcoming 2025–2026 season. Organised by the Dubai Sports Council, the event provides a competitive platform for emerging players to test their abilities in real match conditions, contributing significantly to their physical readiness and technical year's tournament features five age categories: Under-13, Under-14, Under-15, Under-16, and Under-17. Matches will take place across several major sports venues in Dubai. The Under-13 matches will be held at Dubai Sports World in the Dubai World Trade Centre, Under-14 at Al Wasl Club, Under-15 at Al Nasr Club, and both Under-16 and Under-17 fixtures will take place at Shabab Al Ahli prominent teams from the UAE and the wider Gulf region are participating in the competition: Shabab Al Ahli, Al Wasl, Al Nasr, Hatta Club, Saudi Youth, Gunners Academy, and Al Furjan Academy. The tournament follows a single round-robin group format in each age category, where each team plays against all others in its group once. The team with the highest points at the end of the round is crowned champion of its tournament commenced today with the Under-14 category at Al Wasl Club, where Al Nasr faced Hatta, followed by Al Wasl against Shabab Al Ahli. Fixtures continue on 5 August with Hatta vs Shabab Al Ahli and Al Nasr vs Al Wasl, concluding on 9 August with Al Wasl vs Hatta and Shabab Al Ahli vs Al Nasr. All matches in this category are scheduled between 5:30 pm and 7:15 Under-15 competition kicks off on Saturday, 2 August at Al Nasr Club. Al Nasr will face Hatta, and Al Wasl will play Shabab Al Ahli. The action resumes on 6 August with Hatta taking on Shabab Al Ahli and Al Nasr facing Al Wasl. The final day of the U15 matches is 10 August, with Al Wasl vs Hatta and Shabab Al Ahli vs Al Nasr. All games begin at 6:00 Under-16 age group will see its matches hosted at Shabab Al Ahli Club. Proceedings begin on Friday, 1 August, featuring Al Nasr vs Gunners Academy, and Al Wasl vs Shabab Al Ahli. The next round takes place on 5 August, with Al Nasr playing Al Wasl and Saudi Youth facing Shabab Al Ahli. The final day of matches on 9 August features Al Wasl vs Saudi Youth, followed by Shabab Al Ahli vs Al Nasr. All games start at 6:00 Under-17 matches, also at Shabab Al Ahli Club, commence on Saturday, 2 August with Al Nasr taking on Hatta and Al Wasl meeting Shabab Al Ahli. Ammon News - Former Italy captain Andrea Pirlo has been appointed manager of Dubai-based United FC, the United Arab Emirates' second-tier club announced on Friday. Local media reported the 46-year-old has signed a two-year deal with the club. Founded in September 2022, United FC are also known as Dubai United. The club earned promotion from the third-tier in the 2022–23 season. "Pirlo brings with him a unique footballing vision and valuable coaching experience from spells at Juventus and Sampdoria," the club said in a statement. "His arrival marks an exciting new chapter for United FC and reflects the club's growing ambition in the UAE football landscape." Pirlo guided Italian Serie B side Sampdoria to a seventh-place finish during the 2023-2024 season. He was sacked in August last year after a poor start to the season. Pirlo retired from playing in 2017 after establishing himself as one of the best midfielders of his generation. He helped Italy win the 2006 World Cup, won the Champions League twice with AC Milan, and lifted four consecutive Serie A titles with Juventus from 2012-2015. Reuters
