Along with the new terminal of Thoothukudi airport and the extended runway, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (July 26, 2025) launched a few more completed projects on an outlay of ₹4,900 crore in various parts of Tamil Nadu. Since the Airports Authority of India wants to increase the number of passengers using Thoothukudi Airport to 20 lakh per annum in the next five to ten years and to increase Thoothukudi's air connectivity manifold by introducing flights to various parts of the country and abroad, the 17,340 square meter new terminal in Chettinad- style architecture has been created. The 1,350-meter-long runway has been extended to 3,115 meters with a night landing facility for handling wide-bodied aircraft, like A320s and A321s. Moreover, to ensure the hassle-free handling of the passengers, 21 check-in counters, 7 baggage scanners, 3 aerobridges, 644 seats, a feeding room for mothers, isolation areas, 5 aircraft parking bays, fully equipped fire station have been completed. After the expansion, the Thoothukudi airport can handle up to 1,400 passengers per hour, which stood at just 156 earlier, officials said. Another important project inaugurated by Mr. Modi on Saturday (July 26, 2025) was the 306-meter-long north cargo berthing facility with 14.20 metre draft at the cost of ₹285 crores at the VOC Port, Thoothukudi, which can handle larger vessels carrying coal, copper concentrate, limestone, gypsum and rock phosphate. This new berth is likely to create 300 direct employment and 500 indirect jobs. As of now, the all-weather VOC Port handles containers, coal, limestone, windmill turbine blades, fertilizer, edible oil, construction materials, timber, machinery, etc. The 4-lane Sethiyathoppu – Chozhapuram 50 km stretch has been completed at the cost of ₹2,357 crore, and the 4-lane road connecting the VOC Port, Thoothukudi, has been upgraded into a 6-lane at the cost of ₹200 crores to ensure the hassle-free movement of heavy trucks carrying containers, logs and bulk cargo like coal and fertilizers. The double railway track in Nagercoil Town – Nagercoil Junction – Kanniyakumari, Aralvaimozhi – Nagercoil Junction and Tirunelveli – Melapalayam sections were also dedicated to the nation on the occasion. The much-awaited Madurai – Bodi railway track electrification, which was taken up after this section was converted into broad gauge after decades of waiting, was also dedicated to the nation. All these rail projects have been completed on an outlay of ₹1,032 crores. Govt releases 205 cr to fast-track Mamnoor airport land acquisition
1 2 Hyderabad: Work on developing Telangana's second commercial airport received a major push on Saturday, with the state govt issuing orders for the release of ₹205 crore towards land acquisition for the Mamnoor airport project in Warangal. The funds will facilitate the acquisition of 280 acres for the revival and expansion of the airport, which was operational during the Nizam era but has remained defunct for decades. Despite earlier proposals, efforts to redevelop the facility had not taken off—until now. The Centre had given its nod for the airport's development in March. In a key step forward, the Warangal district collector has been authorised to acquire the required land and speed up the process. Additionally, the state has cleared the transfer of another 253 acres—free of cost and free from encumbrances—to the Airports Authority of India for runway expansion and associated infrastructure. Warangal MP Kadiyam Kavya welcomed the development and thanked chief minister A Revanth Reddy for allocating the land acquisition budget. She also urged the civil aviation ministry to act swiftly and begin execution of the long-pending project. Once operational, the Mamnoor airport is expected to significantly boost regional connectivity and stimulate economic activity, further establishing Warangal's growing prominence as a historical, cultural, and commercial hub.

AAI defers Halwara airport terminal inauguration; no new date announced
The long-awaited inauguration of the newly constructed civil terminal at Halwara in Ludhiana district has been postponed, officials confirmed on Thursday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was earlier scheduled to virtually inaugurate the facility on July 27. However, the event has now been deferred without any official explanation. A view of Halwara Airport in Ludhiana (HT File) Ludhiana deputy commissioner Himanshu Jain confirmed the postponement, stating, 'We have been informed by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) officials that the inauguration of the civil terminal has been postponed. No specific reason has been given for it yet.' Developed at the Indian Air Force (IAF) base at Halwara in Raikot subdivision, the civil terminal was a long-pending demand of Ludhiana residents, especially the business community, to enhance the region's air connectivity. It is a significant project that has been in the pipeline for over seven years. It was first approved by the Punjab cabinet in 2018 during the Congress-led government and has since seen multiple delays and missed deadlines. Though initially proposed as an international airport, the new terminal will begin operations with domestic flights only. As per current specifications, it is designed to handle one domestic flight at a time, with the capacity to accommodate 150 passengers during arrival and departure. The terminal will effectively serve as a replacement for Ludhiana's existing Sahnewal Airport, which currently operates a single daily flight between Ludhiana and Hindon (Ghaziabad). Once Halwara becomes operational, Sahnewal is expected to shut down. The construction of the terminal was in response to a longstanding demand by Ludhiana residents and industrialists for better air connectivity. The city, often referred to as the industrial capital of Punjab, has suffered from limited aviation infrastructure, forcing travellers to rely on faraway airports like Delhi, Chandigarh and Amritsar.
