How to prevent food waste through freezing: 5 tips to use

However, there are a few methods people can utilise through freezing to help prevent this.
The supermarket Aldi has teamed up with food waste expert Kate Hall, who is behind the @thefullfreezer account.
It comes as new research by Aldi reveals the average Brit throws away around £387 of food a year, with seven in ten admitting to buying food knowing it will eventually end up in the bin.
Kate said: 'Using your freezer is such a simple way to press pause on your food so it doesn't end up in the bin.
'Freezing food can help our budgets stretch further, and you can actually freeze a lot more than people realise. The trick is knowing the best way to freeze food and what to do with it after freezing."
5 tips to help prevent food waste through freezing
Don't waste those potatoes
Roughly 4.4 million potatoes are wasted every day in the UK, but there are ways to try and lower that number a bit.
Keeping them in the fridge can make them last three times longer, and if you keep them in a cupboard, just make sure they're not close to onions.
Onions encourage spuds to sprout faster, and the moisture released from potatoes can actually make onions go mouldy too.
While you can't freeze potatoes raw, you can cook a batch of baked potatoes, prep roasties or some mash and place in the freezer.
Kate adds: "You don't even need to defrost them when you want them, just reheat straight from frozen until they're piping hot!"
Milk can be frozen
Storing milk in the middle of a fridge instead of the door can make it last three times longer, as it's much colder there.
Kate adds: "Or, if you need your milk to last longer, consider freezing it flat in a sealable freezer bag in usable quantities; this way it can be defrosted quickly in a dish of cold water.
"Some plant milks can be suitable for freezing too, but you should always check the packaging first to be sure.
"Don't worry if your milk splits when defrosted, simply give it a quick blend and it should be good as new!"
It works for eggs too
Eggs can be frozen, but it's crucial to do it on or before the best-before date.
You will need to break them out of their shells as they can be frozen as whites, yolks (with a pinch of salt or sugar) or combined.
If you're freezing the whole egg, always whisk it first, as it will be far harder to mix together after defrosting.
Kate adds: "I like to freeze mine in usable quantities (for example two for an omelette and three for a cake), flat in a labelled freezer bag.
"This means I can defrost them quickly in a dish of cold water and crack on with making my dish! You can use them for whatever you fancy (as long as they're cooked through), they're just perfect once they're cooked!
You'd be Bananas not to
If you peel and slice a banana you spread them out on a lined tray to avoid them clumping together and then store them in a resealable freezer bag.
Kate says: "These are perfect for making banana ice cream or chocolate peanut butter bites!"
A slice in time
Many will know you can freeze sliced bread, but there is a bit of information to keep in mind when freezing buns, baps and rolls.
Kate Hall says slicing a roll in half will make it thaw out quicker when frozen (Image: Tony Kershaw / SWNS / Aldi)
If you cut them in half before they go in the freezer, they will thaw much faster when you need them.
What is the UK's most wasted food?
According to analysis from Waste Managed, bread is the most wasted food item in the UK.
Approximately 900,000 tonnes of bread are wasted each year, both at the production and consumer levels.
Potatoes are next up at around 750,000 tonnes a year, due to overbuying, spoilage or "aesthetic imperfections".
Recommended reading:
Around 490,000 tonnes of milk are wasted every year, alongside 190,000 tonnes of bananas and 170,000 tonnes of salads and vegetables.
What are the main cases of food waste?
The main causes behind food waste include shops and supermarkets ordering too many products they can't sell, and the overproduction of items that don't sell or get eaten.
On a consumer level, most of it comes from a lack of awareness around expiry dates and storing items in the wrong places so they go bad.

Missing British woman disappeared in Spain holiday hotspot three days ago

A missing persons case is gaining more traction as no more information is found regarding a woman who went missing from Vera, Spain three days ago. It is unknown whether the 41-year-old was a tourist or resident. Fears are growing for a British woman who vanished from a popular Spanish resort three days ago. ‌ Jennifer Frances Lacey, 41, went missing from Vera on Monday, July 28. Her disappearance was reported by the SOS Missing Persons Association. She is described as measuring 5ft 2in and having curly brown hair, blue eyes and wears prescription glasses. Investigations are ongoing into whether Jennifer is a tourist or a resident. ‌ SOS Missing Persons is urging locals with information about his whereabouts to contact them by calling 868286726 or emailing info@ Those in Spain are also advised to call the emergency number 112. It comes after a Brit mum's 'horrendous' death after being scratched by a puppy with rabies on holiday. ‌ The British mother endured "horrendous headaches" before losing her ability to walk or speak, ultimately succumbing to rabies following a "mild scratch" from a puppy whilst on holiday, her daughter has revealed. Yvonne Ford, from Barnsley in South Yorkshire, was holidaying in Morocco with her husband in February when she encountered the stray dog that had been resting beneath her sunbed. However, due to the seemingly insignificant nature of the scratch, the 59-year-old dismissed it entirely, only falling seriously ill months later upon returning to the UK, prompting a visit to Barnsley Hospital. ‌ Her daughter Robyn Thomson described how the rabies progressed gradually, initially disrupting her mother's sleep patterns before robbing her of the ability to speak or swallow. The grandmother-of-four also began experiencing hallucinations and developed hydrophobia. She was subsequently moved to Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, where medics finally identified the rare yet devastating virus, and tragically she died on June 11. Neonatal nurse Robyn, 32, from Barnsley, described her mother as a "huge animal lover" who possessed the "biggest heart". ‌ "[Mum] was the most loving person imaginable. She had the biggest heart. She was my best friend and the most fantastic grandparent to mine and my brother's children. She was a huge animal lover so for her to have died of rabies - it is just particularly horrendous. She will be missed so dearly," she said. Robyn revealed that her mother's passing came as an enormous blow to the entire family, particularly given the lengthy period before symptoms emerged, explaining: "She and dad were on a holiday in Morocco and they were on a private beach next to the hotel. There was a puppy underneath mum's sunbed and it scratched her leg. "There was no blood and no evidence of the dog being unwell. It was such a mild scratch and it never got infected so we just thought nothing of it at the time. Mum came home and everything was normal. We went to Florida as a family and she went fishing with my dad. "But in June she came down with this horrendous headache. She was in a lot of pain so went to hospital. Soon, she couldn't sleep, she couldn't walk, she couldn't talk. She was hallucinating and had a fear of water. She couldn't swallow. She was choking on her own saliva. So doctors put her in an induced coma. "It wasn't until over a week later that she was diagnosed with rabies. There's only one outcome for rabies once symptoms develop and it's death every time. So we had to turn off her life support." The family later discovered that whilst rabies symptoms typically manifest after several months, the lethal virus can remain dormant for as long as two years.

This Uniqlo Jacket Looks Like The Designer Style Fashion Editors Are Wearing

While other parts of Europe are experiencing a heatwave (places in Italy and Croatia have issued heat warnings, and Turkey has reportedly reached temperatures of 50 degrees), the UK is experiencing quite the opposite. It's a tale as old as time. European cities get to bask in the sunshine while the UK has to deal with downpour after downpour, and wet girl summer isn't quite as catchy. But, if you're determined to make it a great summer regardless of the weather, there's one item of clothing you need before heading out: Uniqlo's Windproof Blouson. In fact, Uniqlo's windproof blouson jacket might look somewhat familiar to you, particularly if you're a fan of The Row. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's brand might be officially the proud owner of the world's most in-demand flip flop, but it's also carved out a niche when it comes to luxurious and understated basics. Turns out, the brand's Kemetina Silk Raincoat, which retails for a cool £3,420, bears similarities to Uniqlo's affordable style, particularly when it comes to details like a stand-up collar, adjustable waist drawstrings and zipper closure. However, Uniqlo's iteration won't set you back a holiday to the Caribbean either, so that's a major win. Uniqlo, Windproof Blouson Uniqlo's Windproof Blouson is the latest item from the brand to go viral, and it's easy to see why. The design features a stand-up collar, as well as large pockets and a short length. Style with more feminine accessories, like ballet flats and a raffia tote bag. Alternatively, if you've been browsing Uniqlo's new-in section (I spend hours on there), you might've also spotted the Cotton Blend Short Parka, which looks very similar to the sell-out Windproof Blouson. The parka looks like a grown-up cousin of the original, and features a water-repellent finish, balloon sleeves and adjusters at the hem. The parka is also distinctly less weekend-dog-walk and more dinner-in-the-city, especially if you choose the beige colour, which would sit comfortably in any minimalist's capsule wardrobe. Uniqlo, Cotton Blend Short Parka Hoping to recreate the success of the Windproof Blouson, Uniqlo has released a very similar design, but this one features a more practical hood. The cotton-blend fabric will repel water, while the adjusters at the hem and balloon sleeves will keep your clothes underneath dry. The only issue with a windbreaker or raincoat is how to style it to not look like you're about to head to a National Trust site. With khakis and browns, lean into the jacket's soft tailoring with straight-leg jeans, a sheer knit and a pair of muted ballet flats. The khaki parka jacket is, of course, a staple of the early 2000s, Oasis fans and those tackling DofE for the first time, but styled in this way feels more, well, 2025. For the beige and cream iterations, layer the jacket over a lace-trimmed cami or dress (this Zara one is particularly great) and satin trousers for a softer look. Whether you look out your window in the morning to see grey skies or oddly sunny weather, Uniqlo's Cotton Blend Short Parka is the jacket you'll be glad you have on standby. It's also a jacket that manages to balance looking good and actually being practical, which can't always be said when it comes to fashion (Vibram's five-toe shoe, I'm looking at you). And, if the Windproof Blouson's success is anything to go by, the parka won't be hanging around for long either. Ultimately, I think there's a lesson here we could all probably learn from – even if the weather is unpredictable, your wardrobe shouldn't be. Lululemon, Insulated Oversized Collared Jacket Lululemon's Oversized Collared Jacket is less activewear and more everyday-wear, with its snap-closure hand pockets and zipped interior pockets to keep all your essentials safe. Plus, its cinchable hem and close-fitting cuffs mean you'll be protected from any unexpected showers. Moncler, Logo Hooded Jacket Price: £840 Trust Moncler to deliver a chic rainproof jacket. This hooded style features a shirt coller for a polioshed finish and is an easy layer to throw over practically any outfit. The Row, Kemetina Silk Raincoat Price: £3,420 Bag The Row's Kemetina Silk Raincoat while it's still in stock. It's likely this raincoat will sell out, if the website (which is now waitlist only) is anything to go by. The jacket itself features ribbed cuffs, interior drawstring and a handy hood. Rains, Suva Hardshell Short String W Jacket If you like the shorter style raincoat, rather than relying on a full-length style, Rains has a design that's perfect. Finished with two boxy front pockets, zip closure and hood, style with capri pants and ballet flats. H&M, Rain Jacket With StormMove Price: £72.25 (was £84.99) The high street is also packed full of raincoats, some of which are just as good as its higher-end counterparts. This one from H&M will protect you against both rain and wind thanks to its StormMove finish and hood with elasticated drawstring.
