Versalis, Eni's chemical company, unveiled, at its Mantua site, a demonstration plant based on Hoop, the company's new proprietary technology for the chemical recycling of mixed plastic waste.
Versalis, Eni's chemical arm, unveiled its Hoop demo plant in Mantua for chemical recycling of mixed plastic waste into new feedstock. Developed with SRS, it uses pyrolysis and AI for high-yield recovery. Processing 6,000 t/year, it paves the way for a 40,000-tonne plant in Priolo. SC-HOOP won EU Innovation Fund support and will feature at Expo 2025.
This technology, which complements mechanical recycling, makes it possible to convert mixed plastic waste into feedstock that can be used to produce new plastic materials suitable for all applications, including food contact packaging and pharmaceutical packaging.
Hoop was developed through a joint project with the Italian engineering firm S.R.S. (Servizi di Ricerche e Sviluppo), leading to an innovative technology that achieves high material recovery yields and offers excellent flexibility in terms of input materials.
This is made possible by combining a high thermal performance pyrolysis reactor with Versalis's expertise in polymer property analysis and production process optimisation through Artificial Intelligence systems.
Construction of the Hoop demonstration plant, which occupies an area of approximately 5,000 square metres within the Mantua site, began at the end of October 2023. During the construction phase, more than 25 specialised contractors were involved, with an average daily workforce of around 70 people. In recent weeks, the first production tests were successfully completed.
The plant is capable of processing 6,000 tonnes of secondary raw material per year and will serve to validate the technology application on an industrial scale. Under the Memorandum of Understanding on the Eni-Versalis Chemical Transformation Plan signed last March with the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (MIMIT) a 40,000-tonne facility is planned for construction at the Priolo site in Sicily. The feasibility study has already been completed and the design phase is currently under way in preparation for the start of the permitting process.
'Today we are giving further substance and value to circularity, one of the pillars of Versalis's transformation plan', said Adriano Alfani, CEO of Versalis. 'The Hoop plant we are opening today is a symbol of the path we are following – harnessing innovation to reshape our business through new industrial initiatives based on circularity, biochemistry and specialisation, in pursuit of increased sustainability. We are committed to addressing all three of sustainability core dimensions: environmental, social and economic.'
SC-HOOP, Versalis' project name for the realization of the demo plant based on Hoop technology at Mantua, is the only Italian large scale project to be awarded funding in the 2023 EU Innovation Fund call, out of 239 proposals submitted and 41 selected overall. The Fund established by the European Commission, supports innovative low-carbon technologies. The patent has also been selected by the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy to be showcased among Italy's successful innovations, both in the themed exhibition 'L'Italia dei Brevetti' [Italy of patents] (held in Rome from November 2024 to March 2025) and in the Italian Pavilion at Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. Profits over people? UN report says 'lucrative' deals help Israel's Gaza campaign

A United Nations expert has released a report naming over 60 companies that are helping Israel's military operations and settlement activities in Gaza and West Bank. The report says these companies are involved in arms, technology, and heavy machinery, and are making profits from the ongoing war in Gaza, which has killed tens of thousands of people and affected millions. The report will be officially presented to the 47-member UN Human Rights Council on Thursday. advertisementFrancesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories and an Italian human rights lawyer, prepared the report after analysing over 200 submissions from governments, human rights groups, academics, and corporations. The 27-page report was published on Monday. Albanese described the conflict in Gaza as a "genocidal campaign" and stated that international businesses were financially benefiting from it. "While life in Gaza is being obliterated and the West Bank is under escalating assault, this report shows why Israel's genocide continues: because it is lucrative for many," she wrote. She accused companies of being "financially bound to Israel's apartheid and militarism."ARMS, TECH COMPANIES ACCUSED OF SUPPORTING WAR Businesses from various sectors, including technology, construction, and defence, are listed in the report. Amongst them are heavy equipment producers like Caterpillar and HD Hyundai of South Korea, as well as the American weapons manufacturers Lockheed Martin and Leonardo of Italy. According to Albanese, their goods have been utilised in military operations that have demolished Palestinian infrastructure and military sales are government-to-government transactions. Discussions about those sales are best addressed by the US government," a Lockheed Martin spokesperson said in report also names major tech companies like Alphabet (Google's parent company), Amazon, Microsoft, IBM, and Palantir Technologies. It accuses these firms of enabling Israel's surveillance systems and playing a role in Gaza's destruction. Alphabet has previously defended its $1.2 billion cloud contract with the Israeli government, saying it is not used for military or intelligence purposes. Tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, IBM, Palantir Technologies, and Alphabet (Google's parent company) are also mentioned in the report. These companies are allegedly aiding Israel's surveillance systems and contributing to the devastation of Gaza. Alphabet has previously maintained that its $1.2 billion cloud contract with the Israeli government is not utilised for intelligence or military report mentioned Palantir supplying the Israeli military with artificial intelligence tools, but it did not specify how the tools were being used.A UN database that was last updated in 2023 and that also listed businesses involved in Israeli settlements is the foundation of Albanese's report. The private sector's involvement in the ongoing conflict in Gaza is highlighted in this most recent report, which also includes new mission in Geneva rejected the report, calling it "legally groundless, defamatory, and a flagrant abuse of her office." Israeli government officials did not provide any US mission to the United Nations also criticised the report and called on UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to dismiss Albanese. A spokesperson said, "The lack of such action to date has enabled Ms. Albanese to pursue her campaign of economic warfare targeting entities across the world."DEATH TOLL RISES IN GAZAIsrael has denied all accusations of genocide in Gaza and insists that it is acting in self-defence after the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack that killed 1,200 Israelis and resulted in 251 people being taken hostage, according to Israeli then, the conflict in Gaza has claimed over 56,000 lives, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Govt: Secured over 40 plus GI tags for products including Kolhapuri chappal

The Maharashtra government has announced steps to protect and promote traditional crafts and manufacturing skills of the state, following reports that Italian luxury brand Prada showcased footwear resembling the Kolhapuri chappal in its Spring-Summer 2026 menswear collection. The move aims to strengthen branding and secure copyright protection for local artisans and their products. 'We have secured more than 40 plus GI tags for Maharashtra specific products including the Kolhapuri chappal. That is why it has become an issue for Prada now and they are in a legal soup. Some very positive news will come for kolhapuri chappal makers in the coming few days due to this GI tags that we have obtained. We are now in the process of getting 30 more GI tags in the coming few months,' Maharashtra Development Commissioner Deependra Singh Kushwah said during an industry-oriented conclave in Mumbai organised by Loksatta at the World Trade Center. Kolhapuri chappals have the geographical indication (GI) tag that certifies how a product originates from a specific geographical area and possesses qualities or a reputation because of that origin. A GI tag helps preserve traditional knowledge, cultural heritage, and the livelihoods of its local practitioners. Kushwaha said that Maharashtra was also committed to facilitate the building of brands manufactured in India that command global respect and value. He said that the state government has proposed a One District One Product (ODOP) scheme where 72 unique products, two from each district that reflect the state's rich cultural and economic diversity, will be nurtured. The scheme is aimed at enhancing value chains, boost market access, and empower local producers. The programme includes capacity building by training producers to understand market dynamics, consumer demands, and business development strategies and also collaborate with institutions like the National Institute of Design to improve product aesthetics, packaging, and marketability. It includes setting up district-level quality testing laboratories, to ensure product quality and consumer trust and authenticate the value chain. Kushwah said that Maharashtra is also the only state where all districts are engaged in export activity with five key districts contributing 75 per cent of the state's total exports, and the next five accounting for an additional 20 per cent. The remaining 26 districts contribute to 5 per cent of the total exports. He said that the states aim was to increase the total value of exports from all the districts for which the Maharashtra government is currently supporting 30 export-oriented industrial parks, and over the next 4–5 years, these parks will receive targeted grants and policy support.

Euro zone bond yields dip as inflation hits ECB target, central banks in focus

(Updates after euro zone inflation) LONDON, July 1 (Reuters) - Euro zone government bond yields fell slightly on Tuesday but remained within their recent range as inflation in the bloc returned to the European Central Bank's target level. Inflation in the 20 nations sharing the euro currency crept up to 2.0% in June from 1.9% a month earlier, in line with expectations in a Reuters poll of economists. Germany's 10-year bond yield, the benchmark for the euro area, was last down 5 basis points at 2.55%. The trading range for bund yields during June was the narrowest since 2021, according to Commerzbank. The ECB, having lowered borrowing costs eight times since the middle of last year, has recently signalled it intends to pause rate cuts with inflation back at target. "They (the ECB) seem to be happy with policy for the time being," said Jussi Hiljanen, chief rates strategist at SEB. "The broad consensus is that the right thing to do in July is wait and see and then look at the situation in September when they have revised economic projections." Money market traders are pricing in just a 5% chance of a rate cut this month. Futures are pricing 26 basis points of easing by the end of the year, implying one more quarter-point rate cut. Germany's monetary policy-sensitive two-year yield was down 3 bps at 1.829%. ECB President Christine Lagarde on Tuesday said the euro zone is set to face increasing inflation volatility as she kicked off the ECB Forum on Central Banking in Sintra, Portugal. The event on Tuesday includes a panel discussion with Lagarde alongside the heads of the Federal Reserve, Bank of Japan, Bank of England and Bank of Korea. Investors have recently increased their bets on easing from the Fed given recent soft data and as U.S. President Donald Trump has upped his pressure on the central bank to lower interest rates. The repricing of Fed interest rate expectations was having an impact on euro zone bond yields, analysts said. Italy's 10-year bond yield was down 5 bps at 3.445%, pushing the gap between Italian and German 10-year yields to 88.5 bps. The spread has narrowed significantly in recent months and is close to its tightest in more than a decade. "It's a pretty amazing development," SEB's Hiljanen said. "The generally positive risk appetite is having a positive impact for spreads." Attention remained on the U.S. where Senate Republicans were pushing to pass President Donald Trump's sweeping tax-cut and spending bill that is set to add an expected $3.3 trillion to the nation's debt pile. Fiscal sustainability of the world's major economies has been a key theme in recent weeks, as Germany recently approved its draft budget for 2025 and a budget framework for 2026 including record investments to revive the economy. Meanwhile, NATO members agreed to boost defence spending to 5% of gross domestic product, with deficits already ballooning in nations such as France and Britain. "While the fiscal expansion in Europe appears in the price, the market is not giving due credit to the fiscal picture in the U.S.," said Jefferies economist Mohit Kumar. "Our view remains that H2 will see a lot of focus on fiscal expansion which would put upward pressure on rates." (Reporting by Samuel Indyk; Editing by Joe Bavier and Hugh Lawson)
