Netflix's new revenge thriller show has already crashed into the top 10 — but it has viewers divided

Tom's Guide20-05-2025
Netflix's new revenge thriller has managed to break into the platform's top 10, though it probably hasn't received the reaction the streaming service might have hoped for.
The series in question is 'Bet,' a new live-action adaptation of Homura Kawamoto and Toru Naomura's popular manga 'Kakegurui,' which has already been adapted as an anime and a Japanese live-action series in the past.
Created by 'Warrior Nun's' Simon Barry, the show is, in Barry's words, "something 'birthed' from the source material that inspired a new take — one that pays homage to it and doesn't try to replace it', and a project attempting to tap into the original's 'tone, audaciousness, and fun.'
When Netflix dropped the "Bet" trailer last month, it'd be fair to say it was met with a healthy amount of skepticism, though there are clearly some curious viewers checking it out.
Despite splitting opinions in early reviews, "Bet" has managed to claim the number 10 spot in Netflix's top 10 shows chart.
If you're planning on checking it out, you can find more info about the new Netflix series and a quick round-up of what the streaming public has to say about 'Bet' below.
The series follows Yumeko (Miku Martineau), a mysterious transfer student with an unbeatable poker face. She's starting out at St. Dominic's Prep, an elite private academy where the children of some of the most powerful people learn how to rule the world.
Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips.
The school's status quo is dictated by underground gambling, and the top players get to sit on the Student Council. Yumeko's gambling skills put her in the crosshairs of that same Council, but her secret quest for revenge threatens to turn the school on its head entirely.
In addition to Martineau, 'Bet' also stars Ayo Solanke, Eve Edwards, Clara Alexandrova, Hunter Cardinal, Anwen O'Driscoll, Aviva Mongillo, Ryan Sutherland, Dorian Giordano, Laura Afelskie, and Emma Elle Paterson.
Opinions on "Bet" vary wildly, at present. Typically, we look to review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes for a steer on popular opinion on new releases, but right now, 'Bet' only has three accredited critics' reviews listed — but only one of those reviews is a positive take.
Variety critic Aramide Tinubu said the series was 'repetitive and grows increasingly wearisome, offering new to the 'Kakegurui' fandom," offering this conclusion: 'Since the series is not quite faithful to the original manga, and the previous adaptations garnered such rave reviews, 'Bet' feels bland in comparison and completely unnecessary."
At Decider, writer Joel Keller said the show is 'so busy being stylish that it forgets about the fact that there is a story that needs to be told," adding: 'there's nothing wrong with being a stylish show, but 'Bet's' concentration on style overwhelms any kind of substance, making the show a chore to watch'.
However, Ready Steady Cut's Jonathan Wilson has offered a more positive spin on the series in his 3.5/5 review. 'Plenty about Bet doesn't work,' Wilson wrote, 'but it's so full of big swings and fun ideas that it's an easy, characterful binge-watch all the same.'
While it doesn't have a critics rating, 'Bet' has at least earned a rating on Rotten Tomatoes' Popcornmeter. The score currently sits at 62%, drawn from fewer than 50 viewer scores.
Viewer ratings on the platform oscillate wildly; I've seen more than one ½ star score and a reaction wherein a viewer called 'Bet' was 'an insult to the original anime.'
On the flipside, you can find a fair few positive takes, too; there are several five-star reviews logged already, with one viewer calling it both 'a must-watch' and arguing that fans of the anime would 'definitely love this adaptation.'
As with any new release, then, the best way to decide whether the new thriller deserves a spot on your watchlist is to stream 'Bet' on Netflix for yourself. You never know; this could be your favorite new watch.
But if you're really not sold on 'Bet,' and now you're in between Netflix shows, we can still help you find your next watch. Check out our round-up of the best shows on Netflix for tons more streaming recommendations.

Julie Bowen thought ‘Happy Gilmore 2' would recast her with a ‘younger' actress

The modern Happy Gilmore family is back. Julie Bowen is shocked that she's making her return as Virginia Venit in 'Happy Gilmore 2.' 'I didn't think they'd bring me back at all,' the actress, 55, revealed to Michael Rosenbaum on Tuesday's episode of his 'Inside of You' podcast. 9 Julie Bowen on the 'Inside of You' podcast. Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum Bowen wasn't sure she'd even make the cut for 'Happy Gilmore' in 1996. In fact, she was convinced they'd hire a 'hot girl' to play Virginia. 'I read and they were relieved,' the 'Ed' actor recalled. 'They were visibly relieved. I go, 'What's going on?' They're like, 'Yeah, some of these girls are just so aggressively sexy.' And I was like, 'That's a bad thing?'' This time around, Bowen admits she's not on screen as much as she is in the original film. 9 Adam Sandler, Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, and Rich Eisen speak onstage during Netflix Tudum Netflix 'Adam's like, 'Stop saying that. ' 'I went, I'm hurt and I so respect that move,' she teased. 'Of course, why wouldn't you? So when I got the call that I was actually in it, I was like, 'Are you sure? Come on.' In September, Sandler opened up about reprising his role during a sit-down on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.' 'We worked hard on the script, man. We didn't want to let anybody down. People have been asking me for a long time, 'Do 'Happy Gilmore 2,' and I was always like, 'Nah, I'll only let you down,'' he said. 'But then me and my buddy Tim Herlihy, we came up with this idea. You know you've got a hop, skip and a hit,' he said about Happy's signature golf swing. 'I did it recently and it seems simple, so I tried it out. I fell. I laid there for a while and then somebody brought me a lemonade and I just kind of laid there on the ground drinking a lemonade for a while. But I'll be ready when it's time to shoot. I'm a gamer, I'll get it done.' 'Happy Gilmore 2' hits Netflix on July 25.

Where to watch the Sean 'Diddy' Combs documentaries on sex-crimes trial, allegations

Now that Sean "Diddy" Combs' trial has concluded, you might be wondering what you missed during the case (that lasted nearly two months) and what exactly happened. There are plenty of documentaries to catch you up to speed. Ever since Combs was arrested in 2024 and charged with sex trafficking, various networks and streaming services have explored the allegations against him in a series of documentaries. Some lean into commentary from experts to provide context about Combs' rise and fall, and many include new interviews with members of the hip-hop mogul's inner circle. There are more where those came from, too. Another documentary about Combs produced by 50 Cent is in the works for Netflix. A release date has not been announced. Combs denied all of the allegations and pleaded not guilty to the criminal charges he faced. A 12-person jury delivered a bombshell split decision July 2 in Combs' case, which started May 5 in Manhattan federal court. Jurors found Combs guilty of two counts of a lesser charge, transportation to engage in prostitution, but acquitted him on the most serious charges of racketeering and sex trafficking. Here's a look at the most notable documentaries about his sex-crimes case (plus the mounting pile of civil lawsuits against him) and where to watch them. How to watch People magazine's documentary In the special episode of "People Explains," the outlets' reporters and editors review the details of the trial that took place away from any camera lens. "They're alleging his company was a criminal enterprise," senior reporter Janelle Griffith says, "and that he enlisted the help of various people, from low level employees, like personal assistants, to security guards to do his dirty work so to speak, or help him in the commission of crimes." "People were afraid of him," Charlotte Triggs, general manager and editor in chief, says in the 20-minute documentary, "and as often happens, when someone has a lot of influence and a lot of control and a lot of money, nobody really wants to say anything bad about them and nobody really wants to go out on a limb and be the first one." Staff recalls Combs' behavior at the trial and testimony presented, including that of Combs' ex-partner Cassie Ventura. "Now that they're compelled to (tell the truth) by the court," despite any potential nondisclosure agreement, Triggs says, "you're finally getting the real story, and you're seeing that they are, in fact, corroborating these stories, that a lot of people witnessed this stuff." The "People Explains the Sean 'Diddy' Combs trial" is available to stream on YouTube. How to watch 'The Fall of Diddy' Released in January 2025, "The Fall of Diddy" is a documentary series from Investigation Discovery, the network that also aired the documentary about accusations of abuse behind the scenes at Nickelodeon, "Quiet on Set." "Spanning Combs' decades-long impact on music and popular culture, from his early days as a talented creative to his 2024 arrest, the docuseries uncovers the insidious and terrifying allegations of sexual assault, abusive behavior, violence and other disturbing claims that lay beneath his success," according to Investigation Discovery. Diddy's star-studded parties were cultural extravaganzas: Inside the White Party Notable moments from the documentary included celebrity makeup artist Mylah Morales claiming she came to the rescue of Ventura after a violent argument with the rapper. Ventura accused Combs of rape, sex trafficking and physical abuse in a 2023 lawsuit that they quickly settled. Another episode featured an interview with Phil Pines, Combs' former assistant, who said he witnessed violence and described an alleged assault at the rapper's Miami estate. "The Fall of Diddy" consists of five episodes and is available to stream on HBO Max. How to watch 'TMZ Presents: The Downfall of Diddy' This TMZ documentary clocks in at just over an hour and delves into Combs' legal problems and the circumstances surrounding his arrest. "A series of lawsuits and allegations have legendary rap mogul P. Diddy on the ropes," the description said. "TMZ has the troubling inside story from people who were there." The special features interviews with TMZ employees, legal experts and celebrities like Danity Kane's Aubrey O'Day, who said his "mistreatment" changed "the course and direction of my entire life." "TMZ Presents: The Downfall of Diddy" is available to stream on Tubi. How to watch 'Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy' This feature-length documentary is described as a "raw look at Sean Combs' journey through exclusive footage and candid interviews" exploring "his rise, controversies and the man behind the music." It discusses the rapper's legal controversies as well as his early years coming up in the hip-hop scene. 'Call it swingers': A preview of Sean 'Diddy' Combs' defense as lawyer describes lifestyle "'Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy' sheds light on his childhood, rise to fame, and recent criminal allegations, challenging viewers to rethink everything they thought they knew about the mogul behind the music − and the mugshot," the synopsis says. Revelations from the documentary included former Da Band member Sara Rivers saying Combs "touched me in a place that he shouldn't have." "That was inappropriate, and I felt intimidated," Rivers said. "I'm definitely nervous. ... I haven't said anything for so long, and it's built up." "Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy" is available to stream on Peacock. How to watch 'Secret Life of Diddy' This 43-minute documentary was a special edition of "20/20" and is described as a look at Combs' "shocking arrest" and "downfall." Interview subjects include Tiffany Red, a friend of Ventura's. In the documentary, Red, who wrote a letter supporting Ventura's abuse allegations in 2023, said she witnessed Combs being "explosive" and rageful around Ventura. "My sense was that everyone around him was afraid of him," Red said. The special is available to stream on Hulu. Contributing: Edward Segarra, Anika Reed, KiMi Robinson and Aysha Bagchi
