
UK-led plan to build 4,000mph hypersonic plane ‘The Sabre' that flies on edge of space going from London to NY in 60mins
With a breakthrough design and cutting-edge technology, "The Sabre" will be able to fly at a speed of Mach 5 (4000mph) - which is five times the speed of sound.

And engineers are inching closer to putting the state-of-the-art machine in the skies - which could happen as early as 2031.
The £6million plan to develop the jet of the future is called Invictus, which is being led by UK-based Frazer-Nash consultants.
Plans launched by the European Space Agency (ESA) are to develop a fully reusable experimental aircraft that can fly at sustained hypersonic speeds.
It will fly on the edge of space and will also have horizontal takeoff capabilities.
This means that flying time from London to New York will be slashed from seven hours to just 60 minutes.
The Invictus testing vehicle will be upgradable, allowing for the exchange of materials, software and propulsion systems between flight test campaigns.
At the centre of the futuristic technology is a pre-cooler system, which has been tested for the Synergetic Air-Breathing Rocket Engine (Sabre).
Sabre engines combine aspects of jet and rocket propulsion and can pull oxygen out of the air during flight at lower levels of Earth's atmosphere, increasing efficiency.
While flying at speeds such as Mach 5, overheating and air friction are the main problems.
Pre-cooler systems solve this problem, cooling "the air before it reaches the engine, allowing conventional aircraft engines to travel at hypersonic speeds," Frazer-Nash said in a statement.

It is understood that over the next 12 months, the highly-skilled team at Invictus will finish the concept design and develop a full flight system for the aircraft to fly by 2031.
Sarah Wilkes, chief at Frazer-Nash said: "INVICTUS is an exciting opportunity to provide advanced technology for space and advanced capabilities in defence.
"With strong industry support and deep engineering and aerospace expertise, including Frazer-Nash colleagues with a decade of propulsion experience, we have all the right ingredients to make this ambitious vision a reality.'
Tony Forsythe, Head of Space Technology at the UK Space Agency, added: 'This exciting project, made possible by our investments in the European Space Agency, has significant potential to build on advanced cooling and hypersonic propulsion technology developed by UK engineers over many years."
Meanwhile, a hypersonic passenger jet which could take travelers from London to New York City in just one hour is set to arrive as "as soon as the 2030s".
The Venus Stargazer is being developed by Venus Aerospace who revealed that it was planning a flight demo "later this summer".
The company said that thanks to a Nasa-funded breakthrough, the "record-setting" engine system is nearly ready to try out for real.
Venus hopes that its rocket engine will be able to blast passengers around the Earth in record time.
" Stargazer M4 is Earth's first hypersonic, reusable aircraft," Venus Aerospace boasted.
"No one has ever built a hypersonic platform that makes two-hour global transport cost-effective. Until now.
Meanwhile, a massive plane dubbed the 'Skytanic' is set to take to the skies by 2030.
The US is reportedly planning for a 'Son of Blackbird' jet that could become the world's fastest plane.
And another hypersonic jet could whisk passengers from London to Sydney in just two hours.

What are the pros and cons of introducing digital identity cards?
The prime minister is said to be 'seriously considering' a national system of digital identification, both to make it easier to access online services, including government ones, and to clamp down on illegal working by irregular migrants. Given the push to introduce artificial intelligence in so many areas of our lives, it may be an idea whose time has come. But there are political, as well as practical, complications. What is digital ID? It would in essence be a virtual ID card, and using it in the existing, and enhanced, Government Gateway would make it easier for people to manage everything from tax records and social security entitlements to driving licences, education, citizenship and probate – a vast array of areas in which the individual has dealings with the state. It could also be used, as a passport or driving licence is now, to help with all sorts of other activities, such as banking or getting a job. There is a separate, and obviously sensitive, question about whether digital ID should also encompass someone's medical history, voluntarily or otherwise. Why digital ID now? According to the briefings, the aim is to reduce the cost and increase the efficiency of the government machine, so that, for example, people don't have to spend hours on hold when contacting a government agency. Unavoidably, though, it is also a way to detect people who shouldn't be in the country or working in the UK. That, the theory goes, means less of a 'pull factor' for certain sorts of migrant. Would it work? In a sense it is working already, in that almost everyone must have a unique tax reference, a national insurance number, a driving licence number, an NHS number and so on, and can, if they wish, share this information with others. But at the moment the system is compartmentalised and clunky, even if more and more interactions are taking place online and with chatbots. What stage are we at? Reports emanating from a 'senior minister' say that the prime minister has ordered a 'comprehensive and expansive look' at the proposal: 'Keir is leading on it,' they said. 'This is a serious piece of work. After a year in government, it is clear that technology is underpinning everything. Digital ID is foundational. Things are moving forward.' Didn't we have identity cards before? They were introduced as plain cardboard documents during the Second World War as a national security measure. People had to use them to get rationed food and petrol, and had to be ready to produce them on demand, a serious infringement of the traditional British way of doing things. The request for 'Papers, please' has always been regarded as an alien phenomenon. In the words of Boris Johnson in 2004: 'If I am ever asked, on the streets of London, or in any other venue, public or private, to produce my ID card as evidence that I am who I say I am ... then I will take that card out of my wallet and physically eat it in the presence of whatever emanation of the state has demanded that I produce it.' (He subsequently brought in compulsory photo ID for elections.) Even now, a driver stopped by the police is granted 14 days to produce their driving licence at a police station. The wartime measures were resented, and were abolished in 1952. Mandatory ID would be a minor revolution. What about the ID cards Tony Blair wanted? He still does, by the way. Much of the present momentum for change comes from the Tony Blair Institute (TBI), as if the former PM has never given up the struggle. At any rate, the current prime minister's chief aide, Morgan McSweeney, commissioned the TBI to produce proposals, and is said to be 'forceful' in making the case for them to No 10. Certainly, a more primitive version of this project was very much 'on the cards 20 years ago' when the Blair administration tried to bring in ID cards, but it ran into enormous resistance and administrative problems. The motives, in essence, were no different from today. In 2003, the then home secretary, David Blunkett, argued that cards with biometric data were needed so that 'people don't work if they are not entitled to work, they don't draw on services which are free in this country, including health, unless they are entitled to', and that 'when we find people we can identify quickly that they are not entitled and get them out'. When a limited, entirely voluntary ID card was introduced in 2010, some 15,000 were in circulation, but the incoming Conservative-Liberal Democrat government scrapped the entire scheme, after £5bn had been spent. A voluntary biometric residence permit is available as an option for foreign students or workers. Official photo ID cards for voting have also been introduced in recent years. What does the opposition say? Despite showing little interest in it while in government, earlier this year the shadow home secretary, Chris Philp, conceded that digital ID could help tackle 'illegal' immigration. But Nigel Farage remains stubbornly libertarian, and opposes digital ID because he 'doesn't trust this government' and claims that it 'hurts law-abiding citizens'. Labour, and the Tories, could use his reluctance to argue that, given he is not prepared to use every possible measure in the fight against irregular migration, Farage wouldn't succeed in his own ambition to stop the boats. Will it happen? With 40 Labour backbenchers recently calling for change and the Conservatives warming to the idea, alongside the trend towards digitising everything, it feels pretty inevitable, like it or not. Will it work? To some extent, but there are ways to get around any system, and digital is no different from paper in that respect. It could make things worse for some. If a fraudster managed to 'steal' a vulnerable person's digital ID, for example, then it would be 'open sesame' on their entire life, and comprehensive identity theft might become more common. Leaks cannot be ruled out. There's also the grim possibility that a migrant who wanted to come to the UK to work, deprived of any ID, would just melt into the underground economy, and become even more exposed to crime and exploitation. In a worst-case scenario, some criminals or a malign foreign government could execute a mega-hack in which millions of people's data is stolen or frozen and held to ransom. Last, we must reflect on British governments' past lamentable record on grand digital integration schemes – and the fact that the current proposal, which would potentially bring together HMRC, the DWP, the DVLA, the Passport Office, criminal records, local authority records, and the NHS database, would be hugely more ambitious, and hazardous, than anything attempted before.

Parts of David Attenborough's latest series filmed in fish tank, BBC admits
The BBC has admitted that part of Sir David Attenborough's latest nature series was filmed in specialist 'tanks' rather than in the wild. Key segments in the corporation's new Parenthood series, narrated by Sir David, could not be filmed 'in situ' in order to protect the species involved, according to the producers. Skeleton shrimp, boxer crabs and Banggai cardinalfish were among the animals filmed in 'a specialist filming environment' to ensure family bonds and habitats were not disturbed. Specialist tanks and 'incubation units' were therefore used – in part – to help the BBC capture 'the intimate relationships between parent and their offspring '. Jeff Wilson, the series producer and director, and Olly Scholey, its producer, insisted that the balance in these relationships could 'be easily upset' by interference. Writing in an online article about the series for the BBC, they explained: 'In the world of wildlife filmmaking, affecting the behaviour of your subjects is a line we work hard not to cross, and these parenting relationships are incredibly fragile. 'In many cases, across the series, we are also dealing with species that are no bigger than a thumbnail … [meaning] that we needed to design the sequences with specific macro-technologies and careful use of light. 'So often, teams filming in these situations needed to tread carefully, or in this case, paddle carefully – and at times, we were forced to use specialist filming tanks to ensure that we got the balance absolutely right.' One such example featured in the opening of the Freshwater episode, which sees hundreds of thousands of Amazon river turtle hatchlings following their mothers to the water. However, the moment of actual hatching could not be captured in the wild because of the 'sensitive condition of the unhatched eggs underground'. 'To do so would mean risking the survival of the young themselves,' Wilson and Scholey explained. Instead, the filming crew for the natural history series worked 'hand-in-hand' with Brazilian scientific researchers and their incubation unit to 'create a specialist environment' where hatching could be captured. Similarly, producers needed to create 'a specialist filming environment' of see-through tanks to tell the parenting stories of skeleton shrimps as well as Banggai cardinalfish. Previous fakery claims The decision to film in specialist tanks rather than disrupt the animals' natural habitats follows wildlife filming's unofficial non-intervention rule. The BBC has previously been embroiled in accusations of fakery in its natural history documentaries, including a Frozen Planet sequence in 2011 in which a polar bear appeared to give birth in the Arctic, but was in fact filmed in a Dutch zoo. The corporation also admitted that a sequence filmed for an episode of Human Planet, also in 2011, misled viewers by giving the impression the tallest treehouses built by Papua New Guinea's Korowai people were used as homes. However, the broadcaster has said since these incidents it has strengthened training for its Natural History Unit in 'editorial guidelines, standards and values'.

AI is ‘Americanising British English'
Artificial intelligence is 'Americanising' British English, it is feared. Language learning platform surveyed 500,000 people and found that 77 per cent believed British English was being 'Americanised ' by AI programs. In addition, more than half of respondents (51 per cent) told the study they had stopped using punctuation marks such as the semicolon and Oxford comma because they were 'AI-like'. Thirty-seven per cent said they deliberately avoided using correct punctuation to 'sound more human'. The same percentage of respondents were concerned future generations would learn grammar from AI, rather than a traditional education. Noël Wolf, linguistic expert, said: 'While AI writing tools are saving individuals valuable time, they're also nudging us towards a new kind of grammar. ' Punctuation marks like the Oxford comma, the final comma in a list, for example: Peter, Mary, and John, and the em dash (—), once markers of deliberate, expressive writing, are now double-edged. 'They're often added automatically by AI, and have therefore increasingly become hallmarks of AI-generated text. 'Wary of seeming robotic, formulaic or even lazy, this has led users to often strip these punctuation marks away from their writing altogether.' Ms Wolf also noted that the 'shift goes beyond mere punctuation' with English grammar becoming 'increasingly Americanised '. 'This is evident in both spelling – 'organize' over 'organise' – and punctuation norms, which are increasingly becoming transatlantic.' But Ms Wolf sounded an optimistic note, saying 'These changes don't mark the end of thoughtful writing. 'Instead, they offer a new lens through which to understand how language evolves, and what the influences upon this are. 'AI may be redrawing the lines, but it's also sparking important conversations about clarity, intention and expression.'
