US fans can learn from unbelievable Guatemala supporters, Pochettino says

Straits Times2 days ago
United States coach Mauricio Pochettino said Wednesday's 2-1 win over Guatemala in the CONCACAF Gold Cup semi-finals felt like a game on the road, adding that the spirit of the opposing fans was something American supporters could learn from.
Over 22,000 spectators attended the match in St. Louis and the majority were Guatemala supporters, loudly backing their team throughout the game even as Diego Luna's early brace helped the U.S. reach the final, where they face Mexico on Sunday.
"The fans of Guatemala, I need to say, wow, unbelievable. It was like, to play there. And that was good for our players because it was an atmosphere we didn't expect," former Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea manager Pochettino told reporters.
Argentine Pochettino said he hoped to see the same passion from American fans when the World Cup takes place in the U.S. next year.
"An unbelievable energy. That is football, that is football. When we say, the connection between the team and the fans, that's the connection we'd like to see at the World Cup. The connection that makes you fly," he said.
"When we talk about culture, that is culture ... to see (Guatemala), how they fight, how the fans behave, that is an important thing that we need to learn in this country."
Pochettino said that in many countries, soccer matches were seen as much more than sporting spectacles.
"In a different country, you play (to) survive. You play for food. You play for pride ... it's not to enjoy, go home and laugh, that's it," he said.
"The moment that we, this roster, start to live in this way, I think we have big room to improve." REUTERS

REUTERS/Pedro Nunes GONDOMAR, Portugal - - Liverpool players were gathering in the small Portuguese town of Gondomar on Saturday for the funeral of their English Premier League soccer teammate Diogo Jota, who died with his younger brother in a car crash in Spain on Thursday. Club captain Virgil Van Dijk, goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher and manager Arne Slot were among teammates past and present who arrived in Portugal late on Friday to pay their respects to the striker and his brother, Andre Silva. They are expected to join the grieving family and hundreds of residents of Gondomar, a small town in northern Portugal where Jota grew up, for the funeral at the Igreja Matriz church. Rute Cardoso, who married Jota just weeks ago, is expected to be accompanied by the couple's three young children. Jota's death at the age of 28 sent shock waves through the world of football and beyond, with messages of condolences pouring in from national leaders as well as across the sport. The brothers were believed to have been driving to a ferry in Spain to travel to Britain when their Lamborghini veered off the road and burst into flames after midnight on Thursday. Police said they suspected a tyre had burst. REUTERS

Coach Ivanisevic slams Tsitsipas after early Wimbledon exit

Tennis - Wimbledon - All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, London, Britain - June 30, 2025 Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas looks dejected after losing his first round match by walkover against France's Valentin Royer REUTERS/Isabel Infantes/File Photo Goran Ivanisevic gave a scathing assessment of Stefanos Tsitsipas, saying he has "never seen a more unprepared player" in his life following the Greek world number 26's opening round exit at Wimbledon. Tsitsipas, the 2021 French Open and 2023 Australian Open runner-up, was forced to retire from his Wimbledon first-round match while trailing 6-3 6-2 to French qualifier Valentin Royer on Monday due to a back injury. The 26-year-old, who said he had no answers to his ongoing fitness problems after his elimination, appointed Croatian Ivanisevic as his coach in May after a string of disappointing results at the Grand Slams. Tsitsipas, a former world number three, has reached only one quarter-final in his last nine Grand Slam tournaments. "It's simple and it's not simple. I've talked to him a lot of times. If he solves some things outside of tennis, then he has a chance and he'll return to where he belongs, because he's too good a player to be out of the top 10," Ivanisevic told Serbian network Sport Klub after Tsitsipas' exit. "He wants to but he doesn't do anything. All 'I want, I want', but I don't see that progress... I was shocked, I have never seen a more unprepared player in my life. With this knee, I am three times more fit than him. This is really bad." Ivanisevic, who won Wimbledon as a player in 2001, helped Novak Djokovic claim nine of his 24 Grand Slam titles before leaving his team in March last year. He then had a short stint with Kazakh world number 11 Elena Rybakina this season. REUTERS Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Brazil starlet Estevao Willian ‘ready' for Chelsea move: Palmeiras coach

PHILADELPHIA – Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira said he believes teenage prodigy Estevao Willian is ready to take the leap to the English Premier League, after he marked his farewell appearance for the Brazilian club with a goal against future employers Chelsea on July 4. Estevao, 18, scored a fantastic equaliser in the Club World Cup quarter-final between the teams in Philadelphia but could not prevent Chelsea claiming a 2-1 win thanks to a late own goal by Agustin Giay. He will now complete a move to the London club, finally heading to England just over a year after Chelsea agreed to pay Palmeiras a reported €57 million (S$85.6 million), including bonuses, for him. 'I don't have sons, I have two daughters, but he is my son,' Ferreira said after the match at Lincoln Financial Field, adding that he had exchanged words with Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca about Estevao. 'I spoke before with Maresca. He is a nice coach, and I told him that they bought an amazing player but more than this they bought an amazing person. 'He is an amazing player and I said that they need to take care of him and embrace him because for sure in the beginning he will make mistakes, but you saw today that he is a player with a lot of skills who can win a game on his own. He has that capacity.' Estevao was named the best player in the Brazilian league last year and has shown plenty of glimpses of his potential at the Club World Cup. Top stories Swipe. Select. 'For sure he will need the support of the coach and directors because he is young and it is the first time he is leaving his country,' Ferreira added. 'I told him it won't be the same because the sun comes out two or three times a year, the night comes early, but I believe Chelsea have all the conditions to support him. 'He is a fantastic player and I think he is ready.' Ferreira, the Portuguese coach who has been in charge of Palmeiras since 2020, earlier hugged Estevao in front of reporters, with the player smiling despite the disappointment of his team's exit. Maresca, whose Chelsea side saw Cole Palmer open the scoring, said: 'I spoke to Estevao for the first time after the game and told him it was the perfect night because we won and he scored. 'You can see he is a huge talent, a fantastic player, and the only thing for me is that when you come from South America or in general another part of the world to Europe, you need to adapt. 'So we need to help him to adapt and first of all to be happy, continue to enjoy football, but we don't have any doubt because he is such a good player that he is going to be a very important player for Chelsea.' Another future Chelsea player, Jamie Gittens, was in attendance in Philadelphia with the England Under-21 international winger joining from Borussia Dortmund. 'Jamie was here tonight and was on the pitch and will be with us for probably another day or two,' Maresca added. 'He will then go on holiday and come back when we start the new season.' Chelsea will next take on another Brazilian club in the Club World Cup semi-finals. Fluminense continued their fairy-tale run with a 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal in Orlando to book their place in the last four and will hope to continue the momentum against Maresca's men.
