US fans can learn from unbelievable Guatemala supporters, Pochettino says
Over 22,000 spectators attended the match in St. Louis and the majority were Guatemala supporters, loudly backing their team throughout the game even as Diego Luna's early brace helped the U.S. reach the final, where they face Mexico on Sunday.
"The fans of Guatemala, I need to say, wow, unbelievable. It was like, to play there. And that was good for our players because it was an atmosphere we didn't expect," former Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea manager Pochettino told reporters.
Argentine Pochettino said he hoped to see the same passion from American fans when the World Cup takes place in the U.S. next year.
"An unbelievable energy. That is football, that is football. When we say, the connection between the team and the fans, that's the connection we'd like to see at the World Cup. The connection that makes you fly," he said.
"When we talk about culture, that is culture ... to see (Guatemala), how they fight, how the fans behave, that is an important thing that we need to learn in this country."
Pochettino said that in many countries, soccer matches were seen as much more than sporting spectacles.
"In a different country, you play (to) survive. You play for food. You play for pride ... it's not to enjoy, go home and laugh, that's it," he said.
"The moment that we, this roster, start to live in this way, I think we have big room to improve." REUTERS

Tsitsipas, the 2021 French Open and 2023 Australian Open runner-up, was forced to retire from his Wimbledon first-round match while trailing 6-3 6-2 to French qualifier Valentin Royer on Monday due to a back injury. The 26-year-old, who said he had no answers to his ongoing fitness problems after his elimination, appointed Croatian Ivanisevic as his coach in May after a string of disappointing results at the Grand Slams. Tsitsipas, a former world number three, has reached only one quarter-final in his last nine Grand Slam tournaments. "It's simple and it's not simple. I've talked to him a lot of times. Brazil starlet Estevao Willian ‘ready' for Chelsea move: Palmeiras coach
PHILADELPHIA – Palmeiras coach Abel Ferreira said he believes teenage prodigy Estevao Willian is ready to take the leap to the English Premier League, after he marked his farewell appearance for the Brazilian club with a goal against future employers Chelsea on July 4. Estevao, 18, scored a fantastic equaliser in the Club World Cup quarter-final between the teams in Philadelphia but could not prevent Chelsea claiming a 2-1 win thanks to a late own goal by Agustin Giay. He will now complete a move to the London club, finally heading to England just over a year after Chelsea agreed to pay Palmeiras a reported €57 million (S$85.6 million), including bonuses, for him. 'I don't have sons, I have two daughters, but he is my son,' Ferreira said after the match at Lincoln Financial Field, adding that he had exchanged words with Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca about Estevao. 'I spoke before with Maresca. He is a nice coach, and I told him that they bought an amazing player but more than this they bought an amazing person. 'He is an amazing player and I said that they need to take care of him and embrace him because for sure in the beginning he will make mistakes, but you saw today that he is a player with a lot of skills who can win a game on his own. 'For sure he will need the support of the coach and directors because he is young and it is the first time he is leaving his country,' Ferreira added. 'I told him it won't be the same because the sun comes out two or three times a year, the night comes early, but I believe Chelsea have all the conditions to support him. 'He is a fantastic player and I think he is ready.' Ferreira, the Portuguese coach who has been in charge of Palmeiras since 2020, earlier hugged Estevao in front of reporters, with the player smiling despite the disappointment of his team's exit. Maresca, whose Chelsea side saw Cole Palmer open the scoring, said: 'I spoke to Estevao for the first time after the game and told him it was the perfect night because we won and he scored.
