Uttarakhand: Search on for 7 missing workers after Uttarkashi cloudburst
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the disaster management department, and the local administration are continuing their search to trace the missing workers, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said.
Addressing a press conference, CM Dhami said that 20 of the 29 people present at the site had been rescued safely.
'The bodies of two people have been recovered. Search operations are ongoing,' he said, adding that all district officials have been instructed to remain on high alert throughout the monsoon season.
According to officials, the incident occurred near the Silai Band area on the Barkot-Yamunotri road, after a landslide triggered by a cloudburst demolished an under-construction hotel.
Officials said that two bodies have been recovered so far, while efforts to locate the remaining missing workers were ongoing. 'Bodies of two out of the nine workers have been recovered who went missing from an under-construction hotel, at Silai Band on the Barkot-Yamunatri road in Uttarkashi, after the cloud burst incident,' Uttarkashi District Magistrate's office stated in a statement.
'There have been landslides at two locations before Silai Band, and a washout of the road at one location,' the statement added.
Meanwhile, due to the severe weather conditions, the Char Dham Yatra has been suspended for 24 hours, officials said.
CM Dhami stated that arrangements are being made for food, shelter, and accommodation for stranded pilgrims. 'As soon as the weather improves, travel will resume. Until then, all necessary support is being provided,' he added.
Garhwal Division Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey told ANI that pilgrims have been halted at key locations including Haridwar, Rishikesh, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Sonprayag, and Vikasnagar as a precaution.
The suspension follows continuous heavy rainfall that has triggered disruptions across the hill state.
The Badrinath National Highway, a main route for Kedarnath pilgrims, has been blocked near Nandprayag and Bhanerpani.
In a post on X, Chamoli Police said, 'The Badrinath National Highway is blocked near Nandprayag and Bhanerpani. Work is underway to open the road.' (ANI)

As many as 73% of all non-marine UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including in India, are exposed to at least one severe water risk (water stress, drought, river or coastal flooding), with 21% of them facing dual problems of having too much water one year, and too little during another, a new analysis shows. Taj Mahal faces water scarcity that is increasing pollution and depleting groundwater. (ANI) The analysis based on World Resources Institute's Aqueduct data (also a water risk atlas) said sites experiencing severe risks in India included the Taj Mahal, Kaziranga National Park, Western Ghats, Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram, and the Great Living Chola Temples. Around 40% of the UNESCO sites faced issues related to water stress and drought, and 33% and 4% riverine flood and coastal flood risks. 'Water is impacting some of the Earth's most cherished places: The Taj Mahal, for example, faces water scarcity that is increasing pollution and depleting groundwater, both of which are damaging the mausoleum. In 2022, a massive flood closed down all of Yellowstone National Park and cost over $20 million in infrastructure repairs to reopen. Water issues — whether it's drought, scarcity, pollution, or flooding — have become a threat to many of the more than 1,200 UNESCO World Heritage Sites,' the analysis said. The global share of World Heritage Sites exposed to high-to-extremely high levels of water stress is projected to rise from 40% to 44% by 2050. The impacts will be far more severe in regions such as the Middle East and North Africa, parts of South Asia, and northern China, where existing water stress is exacerbated by extensive river regulation, damming, and upstream water withdrawals. In these regions, the combined pressures of infrastructure development and climate change pose a significant threat to both natural ecosystems and the cultural heritage they sustain, the analysis said. Places ranging from the biodiversity-rich Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, to cultural treasures like the sacred city of Chichén Itzá in Mexico, to bustling urban centers like Morocco's Medina of Fez are facing growing water risks. The Ahwar of Southern Iraq is facing acute water stress. In 2016, UNESCO added the Ahwar to the World Heritage list as a mixed site recognised for both its natural values and cultural legacy. It is one of approximately 470 UNESCO World Heritage Sites facing water scarcity due to issues like pollution and competition for its water resources. Fed by the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, the Ahwar is among the largest inland delta systems on Earth. These sprawling marshes are teeming with life that includes millions of migratory birds like the rare Basra Reed Warbler and large wild buffalo that wade through their reed beds. Over the years, upstream dam construction, agricultural water use, and periods of political instability, including significant drainage of the marshes in the 1990s, have reduced the freshwater flowing into the region. As a result, the area remains highly vulnerable during times of drought, the analysis said.

Amarnath Yatra: Pilgrims make beeline for registration in Jammu
Hundreds of pilgrims from all over the country flocked Jammu on Tuesday (July 1, 2025) as the administration started on-the-spot registration of devotees for the Amarnath yatra. The yatra to the 3,880-metre shrine in south Kashmir Himalyas will formally begin on July 3. The 38-day pilgrimage will commence from the twin tracks — the traditional 48-km long Nunwan-Pahalam route in Anantnag district and the 14-km shorter but steeper Baltal route in Ganderbal district — on Thursday (July 3, 2025). "On-the-spot registration has begun for devotees arriving in Jammu city from other parts of the country for their onward journey to Amarnath. This is being done after devotees are given tokens," Sub Divisional Magistrate Manu Hansa said. While on-the-spot registration centres have been set up for unregistered pilgrims in Shalimar area of the city, a special camp for registration of sadhus has been set up at the Purani Mandi-based Ram temple complex, officials said. "The registration is being done at three centres — Vaishnavi Dham, Panchayat Bhawan, and Mahajan Sabha. Saraswati Dham is the only centre from where devotees can get the token. The centres opened at 7 a.m.," he said. The registration of sadhus has begun at the Ram temple in Jammu, officials said, adding all arrangements have been put in place for them. Over 300 sadhus from various parts of the country have arrived at the Ram temple complex, which serves as the base camp for them, they said, adding boarding and lodging arrangements have been made for them here. Amid multi-tier security arrangements, over 1,600 pilgrims have arrived at the Bhagwati Nagar base camp here for their onward journey to Kashmir tomorrow, officials said. 'Arrangements have been made to provide boarding and lodging facilities for over 50,000 people at various lodgement centres across the Jammu region, from Lakhanpur to Banihal. A total of 106 lodgement centres have been set up for the purpose,' Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar told reporters here. Mr. Kumar said the yatra will commence from Jammu on July 2 and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha will flag it off from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp amid tight security. 'The yatra will formally start from Kashmir on July 3,' he added. The enthusiasm among pilgrims arriving here for the yatra was palpable. Santokh Singh of Punjab, who checked into the Bhagwati Nagar base camp, said it is the ninth time that he is visiting the cave shrine. "I am happy to get my registration done. I will travel in the first batch from Jammu tomorrow for Amarnath and will be among the first to have darshan of the ice lingam," he said. Another pilgrim, Uma Shakla of Uttarakhand, expressed happiness over travelling in the first batch following her on-the-spot registration. "I am very happy that I am now going to pay obeisance at Amarnath in the first batch," she said. The sadhus have arrived here after completing the Char Dham Yatra to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath shrines in Uttarakhand. "I have got my registration done here. I am going to Amarnath for the 21st time. Every year I wait for this moment to have darshan of Baba Barfani ji," a sadhu said. A total of 180 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), which is 30 more than previous years, have been deployed for the security of the annual Amarnath Yatra in Jammu division this year, a senior police officer said. One company has around 100 personnel. "The administration is ready and committed to ensuring a successful yatra this year. Jammu and Kashmir Police has made multi-tier security arrangements for the yatra," Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu Zone, Bhim Sen Tuti said.
