World Test champs South Africa unleash next generation tempests, Kwena Maphaka and Cody Yusuf on Zimbabwe

Far from the more glamour Tests underway in England, South African express pacer Kwena Maphaka is ushering in the new batch of Proteas quicks, and at the receiving end are Zimbabwe.
On the second day of the first Test in Bulwayo, with most of the WTC winning Proteas fighters still resting up, and a brand new squad under Keshav Maharaj taking the field, two quick bowlers have left Zimbabwe dizzy.
Zimbabwe opener Brian Bennett was struck on his helmet first, and ended up returning to a concussion, and later 38-year-old Sean Williams, batting calmly was jolted with another struke onbhis helmet crest. Both times it was the new Proteas pace sensation – Kwena Maphaka, who though still wicketless is raising speed temperatures.
It was the finest way to ring in Dale Steyn's birthday. But the searing pacer is tipped by coach Shukri Conrad to realise his full potential only in 'three to four years time.'
Wiaan Mulder (4/50), a WTC winner, told Cape Argus that the 19-year-old carried an X factor that was hard to overlook. 'I think Kwena is learning quite quickly as he's going,' Mulder was quoted as sayinv by Cape Argus. 'I think international cricket is super difficult, so if you're not going to be able to land it in an area that hits the top of the stumps more often than not, no matter how much the ball is moving, guys are going to score, especially good players like Sean Williams.
'They're going to keep scoring all the time, and I think that's the only challenge for Kwena is how can he take that X factor and the balls in between, keep going at maybe one run or a couple of dots in between.
'We all know he's going to be a superstar, to be honest with you, and I saw a stat yesterday that he's 19 years and 81 days or something. He's honestly still way behind the years in many ways. I'm 27 now, so I can say that, but I think he's going to be an exceptional bowler.
There's just something special about him. When you face him in the nets, there's just something. The ball's always moving, it's super fast.'
Maphaka debuted in December 2024 and his first Test wicket in a 4-fer against Pakistan was Babar Azam.
While Zimbabwe aren't the toughest of opponents in Tests, there's always curiosity over the Proteas pace pack, and also coming through in the first Test is Lions' Cody Yusuf, reminiscent of Morne Morkel and his accuracy.
'I've played with Cody at my domestic team at home, and, I mean, he's been an inspiration for us. He literally bowls like that every single week,' Mulder was quoted.
'He's exceptional. He's got the biggest heart. He doesn't ever give up. And I think what you saw of him is just a glimpse of what we've seen at the Lions at home.
'I think he's going to be an exceptional bowler going forward, and I'm super happy for him because he's one of those guys that the way he approaches the game is not with all shouting and abusing people and, you know, ultimate aggression and, you know, all the fluff, I'd say.
'He does it week in, week out, just with his heart, and he just bowls with everything he has.'
Yusuf, 27, is an old-school cricketer described by cricket.one as, 'Yusuf is no express tearaway but he hits that awkward length with consistency and offers just enough movement to keep batters second-guessing. He is especially dangerous with the older ball, using subtle variations and bounce off the deck.'
Zimbabwe are chasing 505 to win after SA scored 418 and 359, and the hosts got 251 and 32/1 heading into Day 4.

Corbin Bosch scripts HISTORY, becomes first player in the world to achieve this unprecedented feat in Test cricket

Corbin Bosch New Delhi: Corbin Bosch started his Test career with a bang as South Africa crushed Zimbabwe by a record 328 runs to win the first of the two-match series at Queens Park Oval in the Bulawayo. It was the 9th straight Test victory by South Africa which is their longest in the format. Bosch produced a stellar all-round performance as he scored his maiden Test century with an unbeaten 100 in the first innings. Then he presented his talent with the ball claiming a five-wicket haul in the second innings to complete an excellent performance. Corbin Bosch scripts history Bosch has got a great start in Test cricket, as he has scored 217 runs in 4 innings where his average stands at a great 108.50 besides 10 wickets to his name at a very modest 19.10. His debut came in the year 2024 against Pakistan at Centurion where he grabbed four wickets in the first innings as well as 81 scoring runs with the bat. But due to a duck in the second innings he was dropped and got only one wicket. Bosch is the first test player in history to have recorded four or more wickets in a Test innings, and 80 or more runs on either side in his first 2 Test innings. He becomes the second cricketer to perform this rare double in his debut match and first since New Zealand Bruce Taylor got a five-wicket haul (5-86) and made 105 runs against India in 1965 at the Eden Gardens. Although Taylor also picked a five-wicket haul in his second match at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai (5-26, 3-76), his batting performance in the game remained poor with 8 and 21 in the first and second innings respectively. Taylor is the only cricketer in Test cricket history to have the rare feat of a century and five-wicket haul on first appearance. In the meantime, Bosch is now fifth fastest (jointly) to score this accomplishment and is equally lauded with Jack Gregory and Roston Chase, and Brian Bennett. The first pace bowler to have this kind of achievement in 60 years, since Taylor, is Bosch. In the meantime Bosch has become the first South African to have made this unique double in 23 years after Jacques Kallis. He is the fourth South African player to achieve the feat and second after the readmission of the South African country to global cricket. Although Kallis is still the only South African ever to have achieved the double twice, Bosch continously remains the first ever to have done this away on a Test.

Corbin Bosch Becomes First South Africa Player Since Kallis In 2002 To Achieve Unique Double

South African all-rounder Corbin Bosch on Tuesday became just the fourth from his country and first since legendary Jacques Kallis in 2002 to score a century and take a five-wicket haul in the same Test match. Bosch achieved this accomplishment during his side's win at Bulawayo in the first Test of the two match series against Zimbabwe on Tuesday. During the match, Bosch started with a scintillating century at number eight in first innings, scoring 100 in 124 balls, with 10 fours. While he went wicketless in his first innings with the ball and scored 36 runs in the next innings, Bosch came in clutch during the last innings, taking a magnificent fifer that destroyed Zimbabwe during the chase of 537 runs. Kallis had achieved this last time in October 2002, scoring 139* and taking 5/21 and 2/26 against Bangladesh in Potchefstroom. He is the only South African to have achieved this feat twice, the first time against the West Indies in January 1999 at Cape Town when he scored 110 and 88* across both innings and took figures of 2/34 and 5/90. The other two South Africans to achieve this feat are: James Sinclair against England in Cape Town in April 1899, and George Faulkner against England in January 1910. Bosch has had a fine start to his Test career, with 217 runs in two matches at an average of 108.50, with a century and a fifty each. He has also taken 10 wickets at an average of 19.10, with a four-fer and five-for to his name. He has also played two ODIs and made his international debut just last year. During the match, South Africa won the toss and opted to bat first and were in a soup at Tanaka Chivanga (4/83) rattling their top-order and leaving them at 55/4. However, a counter-attacking partnership of 95 runs between Dewald Brevis (51 in 41 balls, with three fours and four sixes) and Lhuan dragged the Proteas out of troubled waters. The best partnership of the innings was a 138-run seventh-wicket stand between Lhuan (153 in 160 balls, with 11 fours and four sixes) and Bosch. Lhuan became the youngest South African centurion ever at the age of 19 years and 93 days. Later, a century from Bosch (100 in 127 balls, with 10 fours) and useful knocks from skipper Keshav Maharaj (21) and Codi Yusuf (27) took SA to 418 in 90 overs. In reply, a 96-run third-wicket stand between Craig Ervine, the skipper (36 in 90 balls, with four boundaries), and Sean Williams was a major highlight for Zimbabwe in their first innings. Williams battled the wickets falling at the other end, crafting a 137 in 164 balls, with 16 fours to take Zimbabwe to 251 in 67.4 overs. This was his sixth Test ton. Zimbabwe trailed by 167 runs. Wiaan Mulder (4/50) was the top bowler for SA, while Maharaj and Codi also took three wickets each. During their second innings, the Proteas lost wickets regularly and were restricted to 155/5. However, their new number three batter, Mulder (147 in 206 balls, with 17 fours and two sixes) scored a brave century, putting a 104-run sixth wicket stand with wicketkeeper Kyle Verreyne (36). Later, lower-order scores from Bosch (36) and Maharaj (51 in 70 balls, with four boundaries and a six) took Proteas to 369/10. Bosch and Maharaj put 92-run stand for the eighth wicket. Proteas led by 536 runs, setting 537 for Zimbabwe to win. Bosch (5/43) and Yusuf (3/22) led a disciplined effort from SA as except for Wellington Masakadza (57 in 92 balls, with nine fours) and skipper Ervine (49 in 77 balls, with seven fours), no one put up much of a fight for Zimbabwe, skittling out for 208 runs. Lhuan got the 'Player of the Match' honours for his efforts on his debut.
