Speedway – Monarchs get first home win of the season

The Stellar Monarchs made it over the line tonight for their first home win of the season by a narrow 46-43 margin, largely thanks to a memorable personal performance by Victor Palovaara.
Team manager Alex Harkess said 'I'm very pleased we won obviously but we didn't half make it hard for ourselves. We only had two riders who won a race but Victor won six of them! I was very sorry he didn't get his maximum because he deserved it. We need improvement elsewhere in the side.'
The Swedish reserve won heats 2, 4, 8, 12, 14 and the last heat decider against top Bandits Cook and Kemp on a night neither he nor the home fans are likely to forget.
The racing fell short of the high standard set the previous week but the closeness of the scores kept things tense. Both sides can look back on heats in which they might have scored additional points.
Oskar Polis had been the star of the show for Monarchs the previous weekend but it would not be fair to expect that level of performance every week this early in his UK career on a track which he admits to not having mastered yet. He did make the start in his second ride ahead of Drew Kemp but he spun off on the first corner.
Heat 12 should have been an opportunity for a home advantage and at the first running Swedes Palovaara and Grahn were away. Dayle Wood seemed to fall on his own at the first bend but the referee called all four back, and in the restart Grahn was held at the back.
Justin Sedgmen was the only other Monarchs' race winner, taking heat 1 and heat 13. In the latter race he was brought down by an uncharacteristically rash inside passing move by Craig Cook, who (after some delay) was excluded. That gave Monarchs the chance of the first of two successive 4-2s – Palovaara dropping his only point in the heat 13 rerun in which he piled pressure on Kildemand for second spot.
Palovaara finished the job with a tapes-to-flag win in the last heat decider, but Sedgmen though well placed in the early stages was pegged back by Cook and Kemp.
For their part Bandits will rue the last place Cook opened with and his heat 13 exclusion, plus a failure to take an advantage of what seemed a certain 5-1 in heat 7. With Polis excluded Matt Marson was left on his own, but Kemp and Hagon tangled up when well clear and all they could get was a 3-2.
Kemp was outstanding for Berwick, backed up by Cook, Kildemand and their gritty captain Danyon Hume. They did get the aggregate bonus though they would probably need to win at Glasgow to progress in the competition.
Edinburgh Monarchs played Berwick Bandits on 2 May 2025 at Armadale Stadium.

Liverpool handed positive Alexander Isak transfer update - 'Only see him joining'

Liverpool have been linked with a move for Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak, with the Sweden international said to have asked to leave the Magpies this summer Former Liverpool star Stan Collymore has tipped Newcastle striker Alexander Isak to make the switch to Anfield this summer, claiming discussions have been ongoing for over 12 months. The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for the Swedish striker for several weeks but appeared to cool their interest when Newcastle refused to do business earlier in the window. ‌ In response, Liverpool pivoted to Hugo Ekitike, signing the French forward in a £79million deal. But now it appears Isak is pushing for an exit, with the 25-year-old telling Newcastle his wants to explore his options. ‌ As such, the door has been reopened, and Liverpool could be set to pounce. Isak has opted out of Newcastle's pre-season tour of Asia while his future gets sorted ahead of what could be a British transfer record departure from St James' Park. ‌ The Magpies are reportedly holding their ground, insisting on a valuation of more than £150m if they are to consider selling him. With the expected exits of Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa, combined with growing interest in Luis Diaz, Liverpool are believed to still be targeting new attackers before the transfer window closes, and Isak remains their top target. Collymore, who scored 35 goals for Liverpool, is confident the move will go ahead. "I can only see Alexander Isak joining Liverpool if he does leave Newcastle, which is now expected," he wrote in his column for CaughtOffside. "I think this has been something that's been ongoing probably for 12 months or more. I think the expectation from Newcastle was that it was going to be next season that other clubs were going to bid. "A lot of fans will want him to be sold abroad, but it doesn't work like that. If the player says that they're going to down tools unless you let me go to this specific club, it's very, very difficult for the club." The addition of Ekitike pushes Liverpool's total summer outlay beyond £265m, and should Isak arrive, the overall investment would likely top £400m. Collymore explained the reasoning behind the club's aggressive spending. He continued: "With Liverpool, I know that there probably will be some room for Diaz and or Nunez to go. But still, at the moment, if they were to get Isak across the line, you've got Diaz, Gakpo, Nunez, Salah, Wirtz, Ekitike, and potentially Isak. That's six top-quality front players. "So for me, it just says that Liverpool now are realising that if they're going to stay top of the Premier League, if they're going to continue to win Champions Leagues, but more importantly, win domestic leagues in the manner that Manchester City have done, they have to accept that Man City, Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal are going to continue to spend as more and more money pours into the Premier League. And I think that FSG have realised that they've got to do the same."

Kai Havertz sends Viktor Gyokeres warning as Arsenal beat Newcastle

ARSENAL 3-2 NEWCASTLE: The Gunners overcame a woeful start in Sinagpore to see off their Premier League rivals with Mikel Merino and Martin Odegaard among the goals Arsenal secured their first victory of their pre-season tour of Asia as they saw off Newcastle United 3-2 in Singapore. Viktor Gyokeres was paraded before the game, only for his Swedish colleague Anthony Elanga to net an early opener for the Magpies. ‌ The Gunners flipped the game on its head through Mikel Merino's strike and an own goal from Alex Murphy. Jacob Murphy equalised once again for Newcastle midway through the second-half with a well-taken effort from range. ‌ Academy graduate Max Dowman won a late penalty that was converted by captain Martin Odegaard to secure victory for Mikel Arteta 's side. ‌ Arsenal are next in action against North London rivals Tottenham, with Newcastle's next clash pitching them against a K-League XI. Here are all of the talking points from Singapore. Gyokeres gets insight Even before kick-off, all of the talk was dominated by the tale of two talented, Swedish frontmen. Viktor Gyokeres was the name on Arsenal's fans lips, with their clash with Newcastle taking place just a day after a sensational deal for the Sporting Lisbon striker was confirmed. The showdown came slightly too early for Gyokeres to make his debut for his new employers but he was in Singapore and will have hoped to have received an insight into how his new teammates operate. Who was man-of-the-match between Arsenal and Newcastle? Share your thoughts in the comments below ‌ Isak absent And while Arsenal fans got their first glimpse of their new forward before the game, Newcastle were without their own in the form of Alexander Isak. The former Real Sociedad has been left out of Eddie Howe 's squad for their pre-season tour in Asia after submitting a request to leave the club. As it stands, we're no clearer to knowing if he will leave - or where he will go if indeed he does depart St James' Park. For the time being though, he will clearly be a miss, albeit William Osula did a decent job of things having been handed the chance to lead the line against Arsenal. Elanga enjoys dream start Ironically, it was another Swedish forward who actually stole the headlines early on as Newcastle's £55m summer signing Elanga gave Newcastle the lead within the opening five minutes. ‌ Kieran Tripper and Sandro Tonali were key to the breakthrough, the pair playing a productive exchange down the right flank. The Italian picked out Elanga, who somewhat unconventionally scooped the ball home via the post. After six goals for Nottingham Forest in the Premier League last term, Elanga will certainly be aiming for more over the coming campaign - and he's going the right way about it. ‌ Merino haunts Magpies While Arsenal now have their much-desired centre-forward, they still required a little bit of help from last-season's emergency striker Mikel Merino. Signed as a midfielder, the Spaniard scored nine goals last season having been needed in attack. And he picked up where he left off with a brilliant finish in Singapore. Merino himself won the ball back high in Newcastle's half, with Trossard and Havertz exchanging passes. The German's backheel picked out Merino, who slotted home coolly against his former side. ‌ Havertz the creator With the pressure now off of his shoulders when it comes to goalscoring, Havertz may become more of a creative force. And there are already signs of that happening. It was his brilliant backheel that opened up the chance for Merino's opener. It was also his wicked cross that led to Newcastle defender Murphy putting through his own net. It's definitely early days but Arsenal's new look attack going into the fresh campaign is already very exciting. Raya beaten from range Newcastle eventually found themselves on level terms just before the hour mark through Jacob Murphy. The wideman picked up the ball on the edge of the area and fired a low effort into the bottom corner. ‌ With another Champions League campaign on the agenda for Newcastle, Murphy will be needed once more. And if he can extend the excellent form that he found last season, he will be more than useful. Late penalty secures victory After missing a penalty in their previous pre-season tie against AC Milan, there was no threat of Martin Odegaard repeating that this time around. And while the Norwegian netted to secure victory, a lot of praise has to go to youngster Max Dowman. The academy graduate was introduced as a second-half substitute and shwed plenty of promise. And it was his tricky run that saw Joelinton take him down in the penalty area. Following that successful cameo, Dowman will certainly be hoping for more opportunities over the season.
