Ramasamy claims trial to 17 CBT charges

BUTTERWORTH: Former Penang deputy chief minister II P Ramasamy was charged with 17 counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT) today involving Penang Hindu Endowments Board (PHEB) funds during his time at its helm. Ramasamy, who was the PHEB chairman from 2010 to 2023, is accused of using RM859,131.29 in PHEB funds between May 2019 and February 2022 without obtaining the board's formal approval. Thirteen charges against the 76-year-old are linked to the procurement of a RM779,131.29 gold-plated Thaipusam chariot in 2019. Two charges are linked to RM65,000 in medical assistance to individuals, while two other charges are linked to RM15,000 in education sponsorships. Ramasamy pleaded not guilty after the charges were read out before judge Zulhazmi Abdullah at the sessions court here. The charges were framed under Section 409 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum jail term of 20 years, whipping, and a fine upon conviction. Bail was set at RM78,000. Lawyers Shamsher Singh Thind, Eng Yuh Pei, and Archana Chandrasekaran represented Ramasamy while Azura Zulkiflee and Nurnajihatul Idayu Azuyar prosecuted. Selva Mookiah held a watching brief for the PHEB. During mitigation, Shamsher said Ramasamy had cooperated with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) throughout the investigation process, including by paying a RM20,000 MACC bond when he was first arrested on May 12, 2024. Shamsher also said his client had not bothered anyone during the investigation or put anyone in PHEB under duress. 'The court must take his character, means, and standing into account. He is an Indian community leader without a title,' he said. Man held over viral video of turtle mishandling in Cherating
KUANTAN: A 51-year-old man has been detained in connection with a viral video showing three people handling an adult turtle that was attempting to lay eggs on a beach near the Cherating Turtle Sanctuary yesterday. The suspect, who tested positive for drugs, was picked up at his home nearby at about 1pm today. Authorities are still tracking down his two accomplices. Acting Kuantan police chief Superintendent Mohd Adli Mat Daud said the Pahang Fisheries Department lodged a report at about 10am today after several video clips went viral showing three men disturbing a sea turtle that had come ashore to lay eggs. "Visitors at the beach recorded the men carrying the turtle at around 7am. The men were seen moving the turtle towards a hole they had dug earlier. "Investigations revealed that the men had carried the turtle and dug the hole in an attempt to expedite the egg-laying process. "However, after realising they were being closely watched by a group of visitors, they decided to release the turtle back into the sea," he said in a statement today. Adli said the suspects are believed to have been attempting to collect the turtle eggs for illegal sale or personal use. He said police were able to arrest one of the suspects based on the viral footage and are working closely with the Fisheries Department to locate the remaining two men. Adli said that under Section 27 of the Fisheries Act 1985, it is an offence to fish, disturb, harass, catch, or take any aquatic mammal or turtle, and offenders may be fined up to RM5,000. In the video, three men can be seen trying to carry a turtle that had emerged from the sea before one of them suddenly slips and falls on the sand. A visitor present at the beach is heard telling the men to let the animal go.

Three Terengganu officers remanded over RM25k bribery for building approvals
KUALA TERENGGANU: Three local authority officers in Terengganu have been remanded for six days over allegations of accepting bribes totalling RM25,000 to facilitate building plan approvals. The remand order, issued by Magistrate Yuhanis Mohd Roslan, follows an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). The suspects, two men and one woman aged between 40 and 50, were detained yesterday afternoon after giving statements at the Terengganu MACC office. A source revealed that the alleged offences occurred between 2015 and 2019, with bribes transferred into their personal bank accounts. 'Initial investigations found that the three suspects allegedly committed the offences between 2015 and 2019. They are believed to have received bribes amounting to about RM25,000 through separate fund transfers into their respective personal bank accounts,' the source said. The bribes were linked to 14 projects. The arrests follow a separate case in January involving a government agency director detained over a RM900,000 bribery scandal. Terengganu MACC director Hazrul Shazreen Abd Yazid confirmed the latest arrests, stating the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. MCMC Probes Company Over Online Sale Of Uncertified Communication Devices
PUTRAJAYA, July 28 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has launched an investigation into a company suspected of selling uncertified communication devices online. In a statement today, MCMC said the probe follows a joint operation with the Royal Malaysia Police under the integrated enforcement initiative Op Taring Bravo 3, which involved multiple enforcement agencies. The operation uncovered 3,837 units of various communication devices, such as wireless gaming consoles, remote controls, smart devices and tablets, estimated to be worth RM500,000, which were seized by the police and handed over to MCMC for technical analysis and further review.
