IND vs ENG: The swordsman vs The showman – Ravindra Jadeja or Ben Stokes, who stands taller?
Four Tests later, the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy continues to find new ingredients to keep the pot boiling. This series has showcased two of the finest all-rounders of this generation,
Ben Stokes
and
Ravindra Jadeja
, at their very best.
One of the most talked-about moments came at Lord's, where a photo of Stokes hugging Jadeja went viral. It was a show of respect after Jadeja's valiant effort with the bat, even though India fell short and England took a 2-1 lead in the five match series.
But the story took a new turn at Old Trafford. With the match hanging in the balance, Stokes offered Jadeja the hand to call it a draw. Jadeja refused. Instead, he stood tall and produced a brilliant Test hundred, guiding India to safety from a near-impossible situation.
This time, it was Jadeja - and India - who came out on top.

That handshake, or refusal to take one, sparked a furore. It was a sign of how much the contest meant to both players, and how their rivalry is built not just on mutual respect, but on fierce competitiveness.
Ben Stokes and Ravindra Jadeja are two of the finest all-rounders in modern cricket, but their strengths lie in very different areas.

One is a consistent performer who offers value in every match. The other is a player made for the biggest moments, the one who stands up when backs are against the wall.
Ben Stokes press conference: On handshake controversy, India fightback, his own fitness
Stokes has played more cricket overall. He has featured in 115 Tests, compared to Jadeja's 84. He has batted in 206 innings, while Jadeja has had 126. Naturally, Stokes has more runs with 7,032, while Jadeja has 3,824. Stokes also leads in centuries with 14 and has 35 fifties.
His highest score of 258 shows the kind of innings he can produce when he gets in.
However, Jadeja averages more with the bat. His Test batting average is 37.86, compared to Stokes' 35.7. Jadeja also brings far greater value with the ball. He has taken 330 wickets at an average of 25.07. Stokes has 230 wickets at 31.65. Jadeja has picked up 15 five-wicket hauls and 3 ten-wicket hauls. Stokes has five and zero, respectively, in those departments.
In recent years, Stokes has not bowled regularly because of recurring injury concerns. But in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against India, he has been the top pick among the England bowlers. Despite the fitness issues, he is the leading wicket-taker with 17 wickets. At Lord's, he bowled a marathon 10-over spell that set the tone with control and aggression. At Old Trafford, he bowled through visible pain with one shoulder and pinned a well set KL Rahul, breaking a 188-run third wicket stand.

Yet, even in a series where Stokes has produced some of his best work with the ball, Jadeja has outperformed him with the bat. Jadeja has scored 454 runs in this series compared to Stokes' 304. While Stokes holds the edge in wickets, Jadeja's overall contribution across both departments remains significant.
What makes Stokes such a unique competitor in world cricket is not just his numbers. It is his influence in high-pressure moments.
Whether it was the 2019 World Cup final at Lord's, the Headingley Ashes miracle that same year, or the 2022 T20 World Cup final, Stokes has been England's clutch player on the grandest stages.

He may not be the most consistent batter or the most reliable bowler every time he takes the field, but in the defining moments of major contests, Stokes has stepped up. No wonder Virat Kohli once posted, "I wasn't joking about calling Ben Stokes the most competitive bloke I've played against."
Not because of his averages, but because of his impact when it matters the most.

Meanwhile, Jadeja is a cricketer you can count on day in, day out. He is consistent across formats, offers control with the ball, and has become a dependable batter in tough situations. But despite his excellence, Jadeja often goes under the radar. He does not always receive the same attention or praise as others in world cricket, even though his numbers stand up to the best.
R Ashwin recently pointed out that the media often fails to appreciate Jadeja's consistent performances. According to Ashwin, Jadeja only becomes a talking point when the team is not performing well, even though he quietly delivers in all departments time and again.
Legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev also weighed in, stating that Jadeja is better than Stokes in terms of all-round value. Coming from someone who redefined the role, it speaks volumes.
Both are great in their own rights. If Stokes fuels inspiration with his bravado and delivers the knockout punches in crucial junctures, Jadeja is a swordsman, whose steel is getting sharper with age.

No Jassi bhai, no problem: Workhorse Siraj steps up for India again
"I only believe in Jassi bhai because he is a game-changer." Remember that line from last year's T20 World Cup final in Barbados? It captured a truth many Indian fans have long believed: Mohammed Siraj thrives when Jasprit Bumrah is around. Since making his debut in 2017, the fiery fast bowler from Hyderabad has been the Robin to Bumrah's when Bumrah isn't around?advertisementA fan quipped: "Siraj, when Jassi bhai is not there, only believes in Siraj bhai." Apt, isn't it?And time and again, that belief has turned into something a gloomy Friday at The Oval in London, Siraj showed — once again — that he's not just a sidekick. In the absence of the spearhead of India's attack, the 31-year-old rose to the occasion and told the cricketing world: 'I've got this.'ENGLAND'S MORNING, INDIA'S HORRORBy lunch on Day 2, it seemed India had made a tactical blunder by not fielding Bumrah for the series-deciding fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. After being bowled out for a below-par 224, India's pace trio of Siraj, Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna were being carted around the park by England, who racked up 109 runs in just 16 overs.| Oval Test, Day 2 Highlights - Scorecard |The pitch was green. The sky was grey. These were the most bowler-friendly conditions of the series. Yet, India's pacers were in particular, bowled just four overs in the first session and leaked 31 runs. Akash Deep got the wicket of Ben Duckett, but only after conceding 46 in his seven overs. Prasidh gave away 31 in lines were poor. The lengths, worse. Siraj was drifting too wide, rarely making the batters play, forgetting the golden rule: bring the stumps into looked like India had been out-thought and out-picked. No Bumrah. No extra seamer. England were Bazballing — and India were on the SIRAJ BHAI BELIEVED IN SIRAJ BHAIRemoved from the attack after the seventh over, Siraj didn't get the ball again until the 25th. By then, England were 142 for 2, with Zak Crawley back in the pavilion thanks to a good one from this time, Siraj had zoned returned with renewed purpose and immediate reward. In his very first over of the second spell, he got one to jag back savagely. Ollie Pope, England's stand-in captain, was beaten all ends up by the sharp seam movement and late pace. Pinned in front. He wasn't bowled an eight-over spell full of venom, regularly clocking over 140 kph. It was a monumental effort — especially for the only Indian bowler to have played all five Tests in the series. And then came the prize: the wicket of Joe Root, trapped LBW by a delivery that nipped in after after, he got the wicket of Jacob Bethell, Ben Stokes's replacement, with a ripping inswinging second session figures? Add two more from Prasidh, and by the tea break, the tone had shifted. What looked like a potential 150-run deficit was held to just 109 for 1, England collapsed to 247 all final wicket? Appropriately, it was Siraj again, knocking over Harry Brook for a gritty fifty to end the wasn't a one-off. Just a few weeks ago in Birmingham, Siraj took seven wickets — including a six-for — to help India to their only win in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy so far. Bumrah was rested. Siraj stepped up, once again combining with Akash Deep to bowl India to a famous away this belief in big moments? It goes all the way back to his maiden series. Think Gabba, 2021. Only his third Test. That's no AND CRAFTIt hasn't been a smooth ride. Siraj, now with Gujarat Titans, admitted he was physically and mentally drained after the demanding tour of Australia. He wasn't picked for the Champions Trophy campaign earlier this year — a decision that, in hindsight, gave him much-needed in England, he's come back roaring. Across eight innings in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Siraj has bowled 155.2 overs — the most by any Indian here he was, in the final Test of a draining series, still cranking it up past 140 clicks and charging in with the same of the credit went to Siraj's 'big heart' and deservedly so. But it wasn't just courage. It was craft the second session on Friday, Siraj adjusted his lengths, honed his lines, and maximised the subtle movement of the old Dukes ball. He used wobble seam as variation. He set batters up with gentle away swingers before unleashing that sharp Pujara, who's watched Siraj evolve from Brisbane to The Oval, explained it best: "At the last moment, there is a flick of the wrist. He is trying to push the ball in. The seam suggests it will go away from the right-hander, but after pitching, it nips back. The nip back happens so quickly, you don't have time.'advertisementFormer pacer Varun Aaron added: "He should place more trust in his wobble seam deliveries. Ever since he's discovered his outswing, he goes to it too soon. He floats it a bit when trying to swing it away. But when he uses his wobble seam, he bowls it with so much more energy.'No, Siraj may not blow away opposition with the new ball in the first session of a series opener. He isn't the magician that Bumrah is with the new ball. But give him a battle, give him a scrap, and he turns into something and again, Mohammed Siraj has shown that belief in himself is enough. Enough to turn a session. Enough to shift momentum in a Test. Sometimes, it's all India needs.- EndsMust Watch

England Coach Slams 'Strange' Akash Deep For Duckett Send-Off: 'Many Would Elbow'
Last Updated: England assistant coach has slammed Akash Deep's 'strange' send-off to Ben Duckett, saying many in county cricket would have 'dug an elbow' into the Indian pacer. England assistant coach Marcus Trescothick didn't take Akash Deep's send-off to Ben Duckett kindly, calling it 'strange' and one where 'many good people' would have reacted by 'digging an elbow' into the bowler. Akash and Duckett were having a ton of too-and-fro at the Oval during the fifth Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test, carrying on from their needle in previous games. Duckett was heard telling Akash that he couldn't get him out and proceeding to hit him for brilliant, audacious scoops over the wicketkeeper. But Akash eventually got him out, making him glove one scoop to Dhruv Jurel. As Duckett was walking back, the Indian pacer put his arm around the English opener. It looked innocuous on the field — though Duckett didn't seem happy at all — but some felt it was extraordinary. 'Strange, really. I don't think you really need to be putting your arm around someone, but nothing was really said, was it?" Trescothick said in the press conference after the day's play. 'You just don't really see it. We were chatting on the balcony there and I know many good people playing in county cricket would have said something or dug the elbow in, or something like that," he added. Duckett's wicket was huge in the context of the game. He and Zak Crawley had put up a 92-run stand and were taking the game away from India rapidly when Akash struck. England eventually collapsed to 247, managing just a 23-run lead over the visitors. India responded with a score of 75/2 at Stumps. It wasn't the only controversial incident of the day. Trescothick also spoke about Prasidh Krishna and Joe Root's heated argument later in the same innings. While the Indian pacer was criticised for riling up a usually calm Root, he clarified that he had only bantered him by saying that Root 'looked in good shape'. 'He [Prasidh] obviously tried to get after him [Root] and spark him up a little bit," Trescothick remarked. 'Maybe they have seen him play so well over the last couple of games that India tried a different approach, and Joe bit back, as sometimes he does. Normally, he is the sort of guy who just laughs and giggles and allows things to happen, but today he just chose a different route. Everyone has their own method of dealing with that sort of approach, and today Joe bit back." view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
