Bail date set for 3 Quebec men accused of facilitating a terrorist activity
Marc-Aurèle Chabot, Simon Angers-Audet, and Raphaël Lagacé have been charged with facilitating a terrorist activity and weapon-possession charges.
The RCMP says the charges are tied to ideologically motivated violent extremism.
Chabot, Angers-Audet and Lagacé will appear for a two-day bail hearing — due to the amount of evidence the prosecution says needs to be presented — on July 24 and 25 at the Quebec City courthouse.
They remain detained and appeared briefly in court on Monday by video conference.
A fourth individual, Matthew Forbes faces charges related to weapons possession. Forbes was released on bail on Monday on $40,000 bond. He agreed to conditions that include wearing a GPS bracelet and possessing no weapons. He will next appear in court on Sept. 12.
Two of the accused currently serve in Canadian Army
The RCMP said last week in a news release that Chabot, Angers-Audet and Lagacé had been hoarding firearms and planned to take land in the Quebec City area by force. Police allege they were building up an "anti-government militia."
The Department of National Defence (DND) said in a news release Monday that both Chabot and Forbes are currently serving in the Canadian Army.

The father of one of the Quebec men accused of plotting an anti-government militia tells CBC News his son and the others are being framed. Philippe Audet says his 24-year-old son wouldn't hurt a fly.
Forbes enrolled in the Canadian Army in October 2016 and joined the 5e Régiment d'artillerie légère du Canada in November 2017.
He was deployed to two operations. He was part of a military contingent that assisted the RCMP in securing the G7 in Charlevoix, Que., in 2018, and he deployed in 2019 as part of Operation Reassurance — Canada's contribution to NATO's defence measures in Central Europe.
Chabot enrolled in the Canadian Army as a reservist in June 2019 and transferred to the regular force in July 2023.
Angers-Audet enrolled in the Canadian Army as a reservist in June 2019 until May 2022. Lagacé was a civilian instructor with the air cadets.
The DND news release also said none of the weapons seized during the RCMP investigation into the four men originated from the Canadian Armed Forces.
Philippe Audet, the father of Angers-Audet, told CBC News last week that he believed his son was being framed.
He said his son had been training to perform better in the military and wasn't involved in any terrorism-related activity.
He said he was shocked when an RCMP SWAT team burst into his home to arrest his son.

‘It's become normal': Winnipeg firefighters facing increased risk of violence
Winnipeg firefighters have been the target of violent incidents in recent days. The union representing Winnipeg's firefighters says more needs to be done to protect the first responders after the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) was the target of several recent attacks. Last week, a firefighter was hit in the face with a metal pole while responding to a vehicle fire in downtown Winnipeg. The suspect, who is facing multiple charges, also hit the fire truck, leaving it damaged. On Sunday night, a suspect armed with a knife confronted crews, who were responding to a medical call, and threatened to kill them. The first responders then had to disarm the individual and physically detain him until police arrival. 'It's become normal. Almost a daily occurrence, unfortunately, that we have these incidents,' said Nick Kasper, president of United Firefighters of Winnipeg. Kasper noted these attacks are no longer surprising, adding that firefighters must now always be guarded when responding to calls. He said more needs to be done to keep the firefighters safe, including harsher penalties and expanded legislation. 'I think the toll taken on society when injury is inflicted on these essential workers needs to be reflected in the punishment,' he said. Kasper said firefighters in other jurisdictions are wearing stab-proof and bulletproof vests as part of their protocols. He added this has been tabled as a point of discussion in Winnipeg for several years. 'I don't think there's a one-stop solution, frankly,' he said. 'I think there's a myriad of contributing factors, and our members are going to continue relying on their training, their experience, and doing the best they can to balance a timely response to the public who's in need with their personal safety.' In a statement, a spokesperson for the City of Winnipeg said the safety and wellness of its members is a top priority. One person with life-altering injuries, five others hurt following Wellington County crash
A two-vehicle crash hurt multiple people and closed roads in Wellington County on Monday. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to Wellington Road 109, just outside of Arthur, along with first responders around 7:15 p.m. OPP said the crash was head-on between a van and a truck. The van had four people inside, with one passenger air-lifted to a trauma centre with non-life-threatening but life altering injuries. The remaining passengers were not seriously hurt. The two people that were in the truck were taken to hospital with minor injuries. The area was closed for investigation but has since reopened. A 36-year-old man from Brampton was charged with careless driving causing bodily harm and failing to share half of the roadway.
