Japan-U.S. Trade Talks Making Progress: U.S. Official

Yomiuri Shimbun2 days ago
Washington (Jiji Press)—The United States and Japan are making progress in trade negotiations, and some details may be announced soon, U.S. Deputy Treasury Secretary Michael Faulkender said on a television program aired by U.S. broadcaster CNBC on Wednesday.
'We continue to make good progress with them (Japan), and hope to have an announcement shortly on the progress that we have made,' Faulkender said.
The remark came after U.S. President Donald Trump said the previous day that Washington may impose a reciprocal tariff of 30 pct to 35 pct on Japan, apparently ramping up pressure to extract concessions.
Faulkender said that the U.S. government will announce 'a number of deals' before the July 9 deadline for its reciprocal levies to return to higher levels. Meanwhile, he said that Washington will announce next week tariff rates for trading partners with which negotiations have not progressed. He did not mention specific countries.
The official said that nontariff barriers have been a key focal point in negotiations, saying that progress depends on 'the willingness of…countries to put things that heretofore had been off the table' in talks.
'The fact that we are seeing an opening up of markets and a willingness to address markets that previously the U.S. manufacturers and U.S. farmers were not able to sell into, that's what's really driving our willingness to then offset that' from reciprocal tariff rates, he said.
Washington announced a trade deal with Vietnam on Wednesday, and is also negotiating with the European Union, China and others ahead of July 9.
Regarding the issue of Chinese export curbs on rare earths, a sticking point in negotiations with Beijing, Faulkender said that 'some progress has been made' but added that the United States is 'calling upon China to accelerate access to those rare earths.'

Locker-to-Hotel Luggage Delivery Service Expanding in Japan

News from Japan Economy Jul 5, 2025 22:31 (JST) Osaka, July 5 (Jiji Press)--A luggage delivery service from train station lockers to hotels is expanding in Japan. The service allows users to leave their luggage in lockers and have them delivered on the same day to the hotels they are staying. Last year, West Japan Railway Co., or JR West, and Osaka Metro Co. launched the service in the western Japan prefecture of Osaka, which has been attracting many visitors as it is hosting the 2025 World Exposition. East Japan Railway Co., or JR East, and Tokyo Metro Co. are increasing the number of stations in Tokyo where the service is available. Big tourist luggage such as suitcases brought onto trains and buses have sometimes caused problems. The expansion of the locker-to-hotel delivery service is expected to ease congestion on public transportation. To use the delivery service, the luggage must be placed in a dedicated locker. Fees vary depending on the size of the luggage and location, ranging from around 1,500 yen to 3,500 yen. [Copyright The Jiji Press, Ltd.] Jiji Press

Taiwan Likely to Attend Nagasaki Peace Ceremony

News from Japan Society Jul 5, 2025 18:50 (JST) Nagasaki, July 5 (Jiji Press)--Taiwan is expected to attend the Nagasaki peace memorial ceremony in the southwestern Japan city for the first time on Aug. 9, it was learned Saturday. Nagasaki Mayor Shiro Suzuki said the same day that he has told the Taiwanese side that the city has accepted its request to attend the annual event to remember the victims of the 1945 U.S. atomic bombing of the city. This year, the city changed its policy and sent invitations to countries and regions that have diplomatic relations with Japan or have permanent missions to the United Nations, including Russia and Israel, which were not invited last year. The latest move by Nagasaki came after Taiwan had expressed regret for not being included in the list. The western city of Hiroshima, the other atomic-bombed Japanese city, has already sent a notice of its peace memorial ceremony scheduled on Aug. 6 to Taiwan. Trump says US will start talks with China on TikTok deal Monday or Tuesday

In June, Trump extended to Sept. 17 a deadline for China-based ByteDance to divest the U.S. assets of TikTok. © Reuters (Reuters) -- U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he will start talking to China on Monday or Tuesday about a possible TikTok deal. He said the United States "pretty much" has a deal on the sale of the TikTok short-video app. "I think we're gonna start Monday or Tuesday ... talking to China, perhaps President Xi [Jinping] or one of his representatives, but we would pretty much have a deal," Trump told reporters on Air Force One. Last month, Trump extended to Sept. 17 a deadline for China-based ByteDance to divest the U.S. assets of TikTok. A deal had been in the works this spring to spin off TikTok's U.S. operations into a new U.S.-based company, majority owned and operated by U.S. investors, but it was put on hold after China indicated it would not approve it following Trump's announcements of steep tariffs on Chinese goods. Trump said the U.S. will probably have to get a deal approved by China. When asked how confident he was that China would agree to a deal, he said: "I'm not confident, but I think so. President Xi and I have a great relationship, and I think it's good for them. I think the deal is good for China and it's good for us."
