Red Deer anticipates tourism boost after The Amazing Race Canada debut
The Canyon Coaster at the Canyon Ski Resort was one of the challenges on Season 11 of The Amazing Race Canada. (Supplied) Red Deer is hoping to see a tourism boost following the Season 11 premiere of The Amazing Race Canada, which featured the central Alberta city for the first time. Racers in the travel competition show started at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium before the first clue led them south to Red Deer. Teams had to guess the seconds it took to race down the Canyon Coaster at the Canyon Ski Resort and successfully complete a line dance at The Silver Buckle country bar. 'We're pretty new in the industry, so it was a good way for us to get our name out,' The Silver Buckle owner Mark Linton told CTV News Edmonton last week. 'I'm certainly hoping it's going to pick things up for us and bring even more of the community out because we try to do our best to do things for the community around here.' (Supplied) Tourism Red Deer first began talks with show producers last December and began working closely with the production team in April during the show's filming. 'It was pretty surreal watching the episode live on CTV, knowing that we were part of that and part of those conversations, and that we got to showcase our community,' Jesse Smith with Tourism Red Deer said on Monday. Smith added there was a good turnout for the viewing party in Red Deer for the first episode, with a lot of Tourism Red Deer feeling proud of the work that they put into promoting the third largest city in the province. 'Proud to be from Red Deer and (the) region, and really excited about .. being put on the map in the Canadian context, which is what we're trying to do,' he added. 'This is kind of like a feather in the cap that says we're definitely on the right track.' Smith said about 16-million people drive past Red Deer each year on Highway 2. They're hoping to capitalize on that traffic after being featured on the show. 'Instead of people taking a quick drive from Edmonton to Calgary, we want them to book a weekend and come and check all the different things that exist in Red Deer.' 'For Red Deer to become part of that first episode, (it was a) tremendous sense of excitement (and) a lot of pride … that we could be on the big screen on such a great show,' Johnston said in an interview on Wednesday. He added that patriotism is at an 'all-time high' and hopes there will be a 'wave effect' in added tourism following the airing of The Amazing Race Canada. 'Canadians have decided that you don't need to go across the border to discover something new, unique, (and) historic,' Johnston said. 'All those things in our country … will see an uptick in tourism and that will certainly apply to Alberta and … Red Deer.' (Supplied) Contestants Michele Peter and Aditi Deonarine, cousins from the greater Toronto area, were the first team to be eliminated this season. 'It was crazy in Red Deer. I had to bust out the next hat,' Peter told CTV News Edmonton after last week's episode aired, mentioning the difficulty of the line dancing challenge in Red Deer. 'Alberta was such a beautiful province and just driving around from hour to hour, from challenge to challenge, from Calgary and Edmonton and Red Deer, it was really serene and peaceful,' Deonarine added. 'It was really a wonderful experience for us. Definitely going to go back again and again.' Three teams with ties to Alberta are racing this season, including Blair Gladue – better known as Superfan Magoo to local Oilers fans – and his wife Skylene. The Amazing Race Canada airs Tuesday nights on CTV at 9 p.m. local time. With files from CTV News Edmonton's Sasha Pietramala and Destiny Meilleur

Nunavut enters into new 10-year agreement for air transportation services
The Government of Nunavut has entered into a 10-year agreement with Bradley Air Services — which operates as Canadian North — to cover various air transportation services, such as duty travel, medical travel and cargo. It also introduces "specific parameters" around family services travel that weren't in place in prior contracts, according to the government. "In Nunavut, air travel is a lifeline – it's our highway," said Nunavut Premier P.J. Akeeagok in a statement. "It connects our families, delivers essential goods and services, and keeps our communities strong. Reliable air service is the backbone of our territory's social and economic wellbeing, and it's vital to ensuring equity and opportunity for all Nunavummiut." According to the territorial government, the cost of the agreement will depend on the amount of travel for the various services. "The agreement details base prices for GN [Government of Nunavut] contracted air fares and freight with escalation measures for factors such as fuel, inflation and regulatory changes," reads a news release from the territory. The new agreement, which came into effect on July 15, consolidates air services for the territory's three regions under a single contract, as Canadian North subcontracts services in the Kivalliq region to Calm Air. The contract also includes additional provisions "for monitoring and managing airline performance and clarity on fare attributes for passengers travelling on GN contract fares." Earlier this year, the airline was sold to the Winnipeg-based Exchange Income Corporation, which owns several other regional airlines. The Makivvik Corporation and the Inuvialuit Development Corporation, the previous owners of Canadian North, announced the sale in February for the sum of $205 million. The Competition Bureau of Canada formally approved the sale earlier this month.

Kingsville says no to municipal accommodation tax
A municipal accommodation tax (MAT) will not be coming to Kingsville, for now at least. Administration presented a report to council Monday night, recommending the town inform Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island (TWEPI) that they would not be moving forward with a MAT. Over the course of the spring, TWEPI visited each municipality pitching the idea of implementing a MAT on short-term rentals (STRs) and hotels. The revenue, brought in by visitors, would be split 50/50 between the municipality and TWEPI. Currently, Windsor charges a MAT at six per cent. In their report, Kingsville administration cited concerns over unknown factors, such as the full cost of administering the program, enforcement responsibilities, and lack of clarity surrounding how TWEPI will use the funds for the town. TWEPI suggested that the City of Windsor administer the program, however administration was concerned that there was no certainty on the fees that Windsor would charge for the service, and no confirmation about who would take enforcement action against STRs that do not remit the tax revenue. Resident Tony spoke at the meeting and said he rents out his cottage and was against the implementation of the MAT. 'Let's not add to the problem, more costs to the tourism industry, particularly in the form of a new MAT will only drive visitors to more affordable areas,' he said. Resident Les said he previously lived in Banff for 22 years and served on a tourism council. He said he saw firsthand how a MAT could be beneficial and asked council to reconsider at a later date. 'When tourism numbers are down, there's never been a more important time to consider finding other streams of revenue to try to help us promote Kingsville as a destination,' he said. Council heard that public consultations were held and sentiment was overwhelmingly opposed to implementing a MAT. Administration said it does not believe the revenue-share model proposed by TWEPI is the only option, or perhaps the best option, for Kingsville. Councillor Sheri Lowrie joined other councillors who weren't completely against the tax but wanted to explore it at a later time. 'There's just too many unknowns, too many unanswered questions, so again I just come back to at this time,' Lowrie said. 'I hope to see something come back in the future when we're possibly ready, but we have to let the short-term rentals roll out, let's let that happen, let's grow tourism, and then see if there's an appetite for this later.' LaSalle, Tecumseh , Essex , Amherstburg , Lakeshore and Leamington have not yet decided if they will implement a MAT as they await reports from their staff. TWEPI is asking to be informed of decisions by Aug. 31, 2025. - Written by Dustin Coffman/AM800 News.
