With 174 caps for Banyana Banyana, Matlou has firmly established herself as one of the greatest players in the history of the women's game on the continent.
Her journey, filled with remarkable highs, significant achievements, and contributions to the sport, is one that will be remembered for years to come.
Matlou's crowning achievement came in 2008 when she was named the CAF Women's Player of the Year. This recognition was historic, as she became the first South African to win the prestigious award, putting her in the spotlight as one of Africa's best footballers.
Her skills, leadership, and commitment to the game were clear for all to see, and this honour was just one of many accolades she received throughout her illustrious career.
Over her 18-year international career, Matlou became a cornerstone of the Banyana Banyana team, playing a crucial role in their success on the continental and international stage.
As the second-highest capped player in the team's history behind Janine Van Wyk, she has left a lasting legacy for future generations to follow. Her final game, a dominant 3-0 victory over Malawi on Saturday, 5 April, was a fitting end to an incredible career.
Reflecting on her career, Matlou expressed immense pride in her journey. 'I'm so happy today to have gotten some minutes,' she said after her final match. I remember my first game when we played at home against Nigeria in 2006, and it makes me emotional because today I am closing the curtain on my international career. I'm really happy with my journey even though it wasn't easy. I had highs and lows, but I'm happy for my journey.'
Her commitment to the growth of women's football remains a key focus for Matlou, as she has long been an advocate for the professionalization of the sport.
'I wish that women's football can get professionalized because you can see the girls are trying their level best to get to a professional league and show their potential to play against the best in the world,' she said.
Her influence on the game extends beyond her on-field accomplishments. Matlou's legacy will continue to inspire young female footballers across the continent. She has shown that with determination and hard work, women can make their mark in sports at the highest level.
As Matlou steps away from international football, her impact on Banyana Banyana and women's football in South Africa remains undeniable. Her remarkable achievements, leadership, and dedication to the game will continue to serve as an inspiration to the next generation of players.

Man City Move to Secure Rodri with Mega Deal Amid Madrid Links
Rana Atef Manchester City are ready to hand Rodri a massive pay rise in a new contract aimed at keeping the Ballon d'Or winner at the Etihad long-term, according to reports. The Spanish midfielder—widely regarded as the best in the world following a dominant 2024—has recently been linked with a high-profile move to Real Madrid. But City have no intention of letting their midfield general go, and have swiftly shut down any interest from the La Liga giants. Rodri is currently tied to the club until 2027, but City want clarity now—well before the final two years of his deal—by locking him down with fresh terms that reflect his importance both on and off the pitch. According to Fabrizio Romano, City have prepared a lucrative offer that would make Rodri the second-highest earner in Pep Guardiola's squad. Talks have been ongoing behind the scenes for months, with the club keen to reward not only Rodri's elite performances, but also his growing leadership role in a team undergoing a generational shift. Despite Real Madrid's interest, Romano reports that Rodri is focused on staying at City. The 29-year-old is settled in Manchester and has shown no real desire to return to La Liga at this stage of his career. Inside the Etihad, club officials believe Rodri is future captain material—someone who could lead the squad in the post-Guardiola era thanks to his consistency, mentality, and experience on the biggest stages. While nothing is signed yet and Madrid could reignite their interest in 2026 if the situation drags, all signs currently point to a long-term future in sky blue for one of City's greatest-ever midfielders. read more Japan Stun Spain 2-1 to Qualify for World Cup Last 16 World Cup 2022: Get to Know Confirmed Line-ups of Japan and Spain Group E Decider Saudi Arabia Bid Farewell to World Cup after 2-1 Loss to Mexico Tunisia Achieve Historic Win over France but Fail to Qualify Tunisia to Clash against France in World Cup Sports Get to Know Squad of Group D Teams in World Cup Sports Al Ahly Gift EGP 70,000 to Players After Claiming Egyptian Super Cup Title Sports Bencharki Hits First 2 Goals with Al Jazira Since Leaving Zamalek Sports Arsenal Possible Line-up for Nottingham Forest News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

Chelsea Removes 9 Players from Official Website
Rana Atef Chelsea have made a strong statement about the future of several players by quietly scrubbing nine names from the club's official website, signaling their potential exits as the squad reshaping continues. Despite four years of non-stop spending and a revolving door of arrivals, the Blues have once again shaken the squad. The latest to join is 19-year-old Ajax defender Jorrel Hato, signed this week for £35.5 million plus add-ons, marking Chelsea's 39th signing in just four years. But with the arrivals, exits must follow. And now, the club has essentially banished nine players from the first-team section of its website—removing their photos, profiles, and presence altogether. Among the most high-profile absences is Raheem Sterling. Signed in 2022 for £47.5 million, the England international now finds himself erased from the squad page. After falling out of favour under new boss Enzo Maresca and spending last season on loan at Arsenal, Sterling's Chelsea career appears all but over. Also missing: full-back Ben Chilwell, who returned from a loan spell at Crystal Palace, and striker Armando Broja, who's expected to join Burnley. Midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu and academy product Alfie Gilchrist have also disappeared from the site. Even more striking: seven of the nine omitted players were signed for a combined total of over £200 million—making this clear-out not just tactical, but costly. The full list of players no longer featured includes: Raheem Sterling Ben Chilwell Armando Broja Lesley Ugochukwu Alfie Gilchrist Axel Disasi Carney Chukwuemeka Renato Veiga David Datro Fofana read more Japan Stun Spain 2-1 to Qualify for World Cup Last 16 World Cup 2022: Get to Know Confirmed Line-ups of Japan and Spain Group E Decider Saudi Arabia Bid Farewell to World Cup after 2-1 Loss to Mexico Tunisia Achieve Historic Win over France but Fail to Qualify Tunisia to Clash against France in World Cup Sports Get to Know Squad of Group D Teams in World Cup Sports Al Ahly Gift EGP 70,000 to Players After Claiming Egyptian Super Cup Title Sports Bencharki Hits First 2 Goals with Al Jazira Since Leaving Zamalek Sports Arsenal Possible Line-up for Nottingham Forest News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

FIFA Faces Historic Legal Crisis over Transfer Rules
Rana Atef The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) is now at the heart of what could be one of the most serious legal challenges in its history. A class action lawsuit has been filed in European courts by the Justice for Players Foundation (JfP), representing nearly 100,000 professional footballers, contesting the legality of FIFA's current transfer system that has been in place since 2002. According to Spanish outlet Marca, the lawsuit follows a landmark ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union, which declared articles 17.4 and 17.5 of FIFA's transfer regulations unconstitutional. The ruling came in the case of French midfielder Lassana Diarra, who was blocked from terminating his contract with Lokomotiv Moscow to join Belgian club Charleroi—a move the court deemed a violation of the right to free movement and fair competition. The European court described the challenged regulations as 'an unjustifiable obstacle to players' freedom,' warning that the disciplinary consequences outlined in FIFA's system pose a disproportionate threat to players' careers. According to data from FIFPRO, the global players' union, these restrictions have cost players up to 8% of their potential career earnings. FIFPRO Europe, which represents more than 65,000 players, issued a statement fully supporting the legal move, calling the creation of the Justice for Players Foundation a 'necessary and timely response' to the European court's decision. 'This collective lawsuit is the first step towards rebalancing football's power structure,' the statement read. 'It's time to overhaul the global governance model and ensure players are no longer sidelined from the decisions that shape their lives and careers.' FIFPRO emphasized that this is more than just a legal challenge—it's a turning point. The statement described the current moment as 'pivotal in the history of the game,' stressing the need to reevaluate the entire contractual framework that governs the sport. 'This isn't only about transfer rules—it's about the future of football governance itself. Players' voices must be heard at every level. No longer can they be subjected to legal systems that jeopardize their livelihoods.' If successful, this lawsuit could set a legal precedent that forces FIFA to rework the foundations of its transfer regulations. With the entire system now under judicial scrutiny, questions loom over the future of the player-club contractual model—and whether a more transparent, player-centric structure is finally on the horizon. As the legal proceedings unfold, global football may be heading into a long-overdue reckoning with the principles of governance, fairness, and players' rights. read more Japan Stun Spain 2-1 to Qualify for World Cup Last 16 World Cup 2022: Get to Know Confirmed Line-ups of Japan and Spain Group E Decider Saudi Arabia Bid Farewell to World Cup after 2-1 Loss to Mexico Tunisia Achieve Historic Win over France but Fail to Qualify Tunisia to Clash against France in World Cup Sports Get to Know Squad of Group D Teams in World Cup Sports Al Ahly Gift EGP 70,000 to Players After Claiming Egyptian Super Cup Title Sports Bencharki Hits First 2 Goals with Al Jazira Since Leaving Zamalek Sports Arsenal Possible Line-up for Nottingham Forest News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results
