AADK: 559 drug offenders in Q1 2025 hold degrees, including PhDs
Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said that these individuals were involved in abusing various substances, including synthetic drugs and traditional drugs, such as marijuana and heroin. Most of them were young adults, aged between 19 and 40.
The data also showed that 503 drug addicts held the Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM), 41,743 were Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) holders, while 30,016 had attained secondary-level education, such as the Lower Secondary Assessment (PMR) or its equivalent.
'A total of 9,736 addicts had only primary school education, while 21,057 had no formal education. Youths aged 15 to 40 continued to make up the largest group of drug users nationwide, with 65,264 individuals, or 60.2 per cent, recorded between January and March 2025.
'These individuals are supposed to be the nation's future, but they are caught in the grip of drug addiction. This is very alarming, especially as we are also seeing involvement among schoolchildren. For the same period, 23 students aged 14 were found to be involved in drug abuse.
He said this after attending the joint engagement session between AADK and the Malaysian Drug Prevention Association (Pemadam), here, today. Also present was Penang Youth, Sports and Health Committee chairman, Daniel Gooi Zi Sen, who is also the state Pemadam chairman.
He said that AADK is now focusing on the prevention of drug addiction activities, because it not only damages the country's future generations, but also requires high expenses to treat it, and the agency spends RM51 per day for each PUSPEN trainee.
Meanwhile, in another development, Shamsul Anuar, who is also the national PEMADAM president, said that AADK is conducting an internal investigation into the incident in which six male trainees from the PUSPEN in Jelebu, Negeri Sembilan, escaped from the centre early Tuesday morning.
He said that AADK headquarters, together with its Negeri Sembilan branch, has launched an internal investigation to examine all aspects of the incident, including identifying its cause.
'I was informed that six trainees at PUSPEN Jempol escaped, and so far, five have been successfully recaptured, while one remains at large and efforts are ongoing to track him down,' he said.
'Once the investigation is complete, appropriate corrective actions will be taken, based on the findings,' he said.

His comments came after a working visit with the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) and the Malaysian Anti-Drug Association (Pemadam) on Friday night. Mohd Shuhaily will lead AKPS for a two-year term until June 30, 2027. He succeeded Datuk Seri Hazani Ghazali who retired on Feb 10. On a separate matter, Shamsul Anuar also stressed the importance of efficient border management in preparation for Visit Malaysia 2026. 'This is a major agenda that we are implementing continuously in preparation for Visit Malaysia 2026, to enhance the country's image. 'The Cabinet Committee on Eradicating Drug Abuse, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, has previously approved an anti-drug communication plan aimed at raising public awareness until 2027. 'In addition to implementing various awareness programmes that are relevant to current circumstances, I hope the public will always remember that drugs remain the country's number one enemy,' he said. He added that tackling drug abuse must be a joint effort involving the government, private sector, non-governmental organisations, religious bodies and politicians. 'The AADK's slogan, 'Drug prevention is a shared responsibility', means it cannot be solely placed on the agency's shoulders if we are serious about solving this problem,' he said. 'If drug abuse is widespread in certain states, it should not be seen as a political issue,' he said. He also urged Pemadam to adopt new approaches to tackle drug abuse, adding that the challenges are becoming increasingly complex, particularly among those aged 15 to 39, who make up 60.2% of cases as of March 31. 'Although these young people differ in age, background, interests and education, they share one thing in common, which is that they are highly susceptible to various influences,' he said.

294 trainees complete police training at Pulapol Kuching

KUCHING (July 3): A total of 294 trainees have successfully completed their six-month basic training under the Police Constable Basic Training Programme (PLAK) at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) here today. Gracing the passing out parade was Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department director Datuk Hamzah Ahmad, who said the event not only marked the conclusion of their training but also the beginning of a lifelong duty to serve with honour and integrity as members of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). According to Hamzah, the cohort comprises individuals from a variety of academic and skills backgrounds, including seven with the Malaysian Skills Certificate, 233 with the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), one with the Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia (STAM), 42 with the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM), nine with diplomas, and two with other qualifications. 'This shows that the PDRM welcomes recruits from diverse academic and skill backgrounds, adding value to the force,' he said. Hamzah also highlighted the evolving challenges faced by the police today, noting that officers are now dealing with both conventional crimes such as robbery and theft and modern threats, including cybercrime, online scams, misinformation and social media slander. 'In today's fast-paced digital and social media landscape, every member of the police force must be intelligent, technologically literate snd uphold integrity without compromise. 'The credibility of the force lies in the actions of each of its members. He also paid tribute to the trainers for their dedication and professionalism, describing the quality of the graduates as a reflection of their commitment. He concluded by urging the trainees to uphold the dignity of the uniform and the name of PDRM. 'Serve with sincerity. Be firm without brutality, approachable without weakness, and professional in all circumstances 'The people's trust in the police depends on your ethics and conduct in the field,' he said. During the event, three trainees were honoured for their outstanding performance throughout the course. Constable Alfred Johari from Platoon 10/Bravo, 26, who holds a bachelor's degree and hails from Pitas, Sabah, was named Best Academic Trainee. The Best Outdoor Training Trainee award went to Constable Azroy Azmon Juanis, 21, from Platoon 4/Alpha. He holds the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and comes from Kampung Indah Nabawan, Sabah. Meanwhile, Overall Best Trainee was awarded to Constable Suhaimi Sarman, 25, of Platoon 6/Alpha.
