Art by Pathlight students to be displayed along Singapore River

SINGAPORE – A construction hoarding in Kim Seng Linear Park – which runs alongside the Singapore River – will soon be turned into a community art canvas, showcasing 30 works by neurodivergent students from Pathlight School.
The works, inspired by the Singapore River, represent the students' interpretations of the river's history, community and culture. They will be exhibited on the hoarding for three years throughout the construction of the River Green development, a 524-unit riverfront condominium consisting of a single 36-storey tower.
The project is a collaboration between real estate developer Wing Tai Group and Pathlight School.
Measuring 200m long and 4.8m high, the transformed hoarding will be ready by July 17.
The 30 works to be displayed on the hoarding were selected from among 69 entries in an art competition organised by Pathlight School and Wing Tai Group that was open to secondary and vocational track Pathlight students.
The competition was judged by Ms Cecilia Chow, senior manager of programmes at Singapore Art Museum; Dr Joseph Lim, associate professor at NUS School of Architecture; and Mr Edmund Cheng, deputy chairman of Wing Tai Holdings.
An awards ceremony to recognise the students whose works were chosen for the display was held at Pathlight School Ang Mo Kio Campus 1 on July 11.
Ms Stacey Ow Yeong, head of marketing at Wing Tai Property Management, said the developer saw an opportunity to convert the hoarding for its River Green development in Kim Seng Linear Park into an art canvas because it is highly visible, and many people pass by the area.

'This collaboration with Pathlight School shines a light on the unique perspectives and artistic talents of neurodivergent individuals,' she added.
Marcus Goh, 16, created two artworks which placed within the top 10 in the art competition.
His acrylic painting, Flowing Through History, was inspired by the things that he sees around the Singapore River, such as the boats, the buildings and the people passing by.
'I feel very happy and proud,' said the Secondary 1 student, when asked how he feels about having his art displayed.
His second winning artwork, A Spectrum Of Colours, uses colourful buildings to reflect the vibrancy of Singapore's culture, where different ethnicities and communities live together.

Sec 2 student Nurdaanya Mohamed Hafiz, 14, depicted the teeming quays of the Singapore River in her pen and watercolour work, A Playful Night At The Singapore River.
'As a little history buff myself, I learnt that the Singapore River holds cultural and historical significance to Singapore, especially in our early days,' she said.
Another inspiration for her was seeing youth her age or younger, like her younger brothers, disconnect from their gadgets so they can enjoy outdoor activities.

'I wanted to bring out that sense of nostalgia to our older and current generations by combining two significant parts of their childhood and Singapore's history into one frame,' the schoolgirl reflected.
Community & Wellness Along Singapore River, an entry by Year 8 vocational student Brennan Tay, 20, which placed within the top 30, captures the joy of wellness and community in a lively green park by the river.
'I visited Kim Seng Park and I saw a group of children running together, and I liked what I saw because I am also in a running club CCA in school,' he said. 'I like to share the joy of wellness and connecting with nature through my artwork.'

At Pathlight School, art education classes are tailored to the diverse profiles, strengths and learning needs of students.
Ms Nurhilda Anuar, subject head of the art department at Pathlight School, said: 'In my art lessons, I will study each student profile in order to determine the suitable approach for each student. For instance, autism-friendly strategies such as visual supports and simplified work systems may apply for a student who requires explicit structure to understand and execute the art task.'
Senior principal of Pathlight School, Ms Linda Kho, hopes the public will recognise the students' talents and abilities through the artworks, and be more open to embracing neurodivergent people.
'It's not about being different or focusing on their deficit. It's about their talents and their voice, and that there's a place for them to contribute to society,' she said.

SINGAPORE – Veteran diplomats Chan Heng Chee and Noeleen Heyzer, as well as tech pioneer Wong Ngit Liong, received honorary degrees from the National University of Singapore (NUS) on July 14. The honorary Doctor of Letters degrees were presented by Education Minister Desmond Lee at the commencement ceremony for 99 graduates from the NUS Business School, held by NUS at the University Cultural Centre. The honorary degrees are the university's highest form of recognition for outstanding individuals whose service has had an impact in Singapore and globally. Professor Chan Heng Chee is an NUS alumna who graduated with first class honours in Political Science in 1964 when it was then known as the University of Singapore, and returned to do her PhD in 1974. She was NUS' first female head of Political Science, before being appointed to lead the new Institute of Policy Studies in 1988. In 1996, at the start of her 16-year stay in Washington as Singapore's UN Representative and Ambassador to the United States, Prof Chan deepened ties, culminating in the US-Singapore Free Trade Agreement which was signed in 2003. In a citation, Professor Simon Chesterman, NUS' vice provost and dean of NUS College, said that through her career transitions, from academic to diplomat and then public intellectual, Prof Chan brought together a rare combination of intellectual independence and global experience. 'Throughout her career, Ambassador Chan has helped to shape how Singapore understands itself and how Singapore is understood by the world... at a time when expertise is not always valued quite as much as it is needed,' he said. While students of her time were focused on being 'present-ready' to grapple with political developments of the time such as Singapore's separation from Malaysia, Prof Chan said universities today have to prepare students to be 'future-ready'. With unpred icta bility and volatility being the new normal in 2025, she said students need to also develop an interest in politics and geopolitics. Addressing the graduands, she encouraged them to understand and follow what is happening in the world and locally, as it is crucial for their futures. A leadership pioneer for women, Dr Heyzer was the first woman from outside North America to head the UN's Development Fund for Women, and the first woman to serve as the executive secretary of the UN's Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific since its founding in 1947. Calling her a trusted voice in global governance, NUS' vice provost of student life and acting dean at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy Leong Ching said that Dr Heyzer is a trailblazer for women's empowerment across the world. 'Her leadership has redefined the nature of power itself – as a force for dignity, inclusion, and transformation,' said Prof Leong. Indonesia to require e-commerce platforms to collect tax on sellers

JAKARTA - Indonesia's finance ministry will require e-commerce platforms to collect and pass on an income tax on sales made by small- and medium-sized sellers, according to new regulations published on July 14. Platforms that meet certain criteria must withhold and pass on a 0.5 per cent tax on sales made by sellers with an annual turnover of between 500 million rupiah (S$40,000) to 4.8 billion rupiah. They must also share the sellers' information with tax authorities. The ministry will notify a platform if it meets the criteria, which will be based on site traffic and total transaction value over the past 12 months. While the directive is effective immediately, platforms will be given a month to comply. Reuters reported exclusively last month on the plan to impose the tax. The tax office has said the rules are intended to tackle the 'shadow economy'. Indonesia's e-commerce association idEA has said its members would comply, but expressed concern over the implementation timeline, with the regulation set to impact millions of sellers. Indonesia's main e-commerce operators include ByteDance's TikTok Shop and Tokopedia, Sea Limited's Shopee, the Alibaba-backed Lazada, Blibli and Bukalapak. South-east Asia's largest economy has a booming e-commerce industry, with last year's estimated gross merchandise value of US65 billion expected to grow to US$150 billion (S$83 billion) by 2030, according to a report by Google, Singapore state investor Temasek and consultancy Bain & Co. Spain's top 25 Mediterranean and Atlantic coast destinations saw local tourism drop by 800,000 people last year whereas foreign visitors rose 1.94 million, according to previously unreported official data reviewed by analysis firm inAtlas. The trend looks sure to continue as the world's second-most visited country - after France - anticipates a record 100 million foreign visitors this year. "Prices have risen outrageously. The whole Spanish coast is very expensive," said Wendy Davila, 26. She cancelled an "exorbitant" trip with her boyfriend in Cadiz on the south coast for a cheaper visit to the inland city of Burgos, famed for its Gothic cathedral and the tomb of 11th century commander El Cid. "Now you don't go on holiday wherever you want, but wherever you can," added Davila, who is nostalgic for childhood beach holidays in Alicante on the Mediterranean. With a population of 48 million - half the number of foreign visitors each year - Spain relies heavily on tourism, which contributes more than 13% of GDP. Beachfront rentals have also climbed 20.3% since mid-2023, according to price monitoring firm Tecnitasa, with most of them booked out for the summer by the first quarter. GOING INLAND Aware of the brewing discontent and disparities, Spain's socialist government is encouraging international tourists to explore inland attractions to address overcrowding and diversify. "If we want to continue to be leaders in international tourism, we have to decentralise our destinations," Tourism Minister Jordi Hereu said at the launch of a first campaign to highlight Spain's lesser-known charms in June. "We want Europeans and those from other continents to rethink their idea of the Spain they love and visit so much." Spaniards have a strong tradition of escaping for family holidays in the hot summer months, but they are turning more to Airbnb rentals than hotels, and swapping Catalonia or the Balearic Islands for lesser-known destinations in Andalucia or Castille and Leon where prices are lower and mass tourism is yet to hit. Last year, 1.7 million more Spaniards holidayed in generally more affordable inland areas, according to inAtlas. In the mountain town of El Bosque for example, 100 km from the beaches of Cadiz on the Atlantic, the number of Spanish tourists increased by 22% last year. "There may be a certain displacement effect," said Juan Pedro Aznar, professor and researcher at the Madrid-based Esade business school, noting Spaniards' lower purchasing power compared to British and German tourists. For some Spaniards, it is best to avoid the summer crowds altogether. Nurse Maria de la Jara will stay in Madrid this summer, only going south to visit family in Cadiz once the busy season is over. "I used to go to my family's house, but there are more and more foreign tourists in Cadiz and when a cruise ship arrives, the population doubles," said the 51-year-old. "It's overwhelming." REUTERS
