India Open race walk under scanner after AFI glitch

Hindustan Times05-05-2025

New Delhi: The results of the Indian Open Race Walking Competition are yet to be updated by the World Athletics (WA) for world championships qualification. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) said there was a technical glitch in one race (women's 35km) during the April 19 event in Chandigarh, but results of other races will be considered by WA.
Race walkers, however, say that when they reached out to WA, they were told the competition has not met the set 'standards and criteria' and therefore the results are not considered for ranking points towards the Tokyo World Championships in September.
If the result is not added, the race walkers will have to compete in another event to boost qualification chances. In Tokyo, competitions will be held in the 20km and 35km events (men and women). Three results in the qualification period (Feb 25, 2024-Aug 24, 2025) are considered for world rankings. A maximum of three race walkers from one country can compete.
It has been learned that in the women's 35km competition, there was an issue with the counting of laps in the course (road) and the race finished at 34km.
'There was an issue with only a 35km race walk. It was a human error on the part of a judge due to which the result of women's 35km race walk has been scrapped. We have already taken action against the judge. The result of other races will be updated in the rankings,' AFI spokesperson Adille Sumariwalla told HT.
The competition is conducted by technical officials of AFI. Besides, there are three WA race-walking judges who monitor the races and report to the world body.
Interestingly, the result of India Open Race Walking Competition of 2024 also came under scrutiny due a similar technical error. WA had not recognised the timings of three race walkers who had qualified for Paris Olympics from that meet. One of them was Servin Sebastian.
Unfortunately, Servin is again at the receiving end for no fault of his. He won the 20km event clocking 1 hour, 21 minutes, 47 seconds. Servin is in good form this season and currently ranked just outside of the top 50 (Road to Tokyo) who will qualify for Tokyo. The Chandigarh result would have taken him into the top-50. Now, Servin will have to do well at the Asian Championships to qualify. The 35km men's race walk was won by 2023 Asian Games bronze medallist Ram Baboo (2:32:54).
A coach said it was disappointing that race walkers will now have to compete in another event to have any chance of qualifying for Tokyo. 'How can you repeatedly have technical errors in the most important competition of your domestic calendar? It is a lot of hard work and effort and now to not have the result is very discouraging. Not every athlete has the sponsor to go out and compete in events overseas to qualify,' the coach said.

Kishore Jena Pulls Out Of Neeraj Chopra Classic Due To Injury

Struggling with an ankle injury, Kishore Jena has pulled out of Saturday's Neeraj Chopra Classic international javelin event and will be replaced by Yashvir Singh, the organisers announced on Monday. The 23-year-old Yashvir had finished second in the Federation Cup in April and fifth in the Asian Athletics Championships in South Korea in May with a personal best of 82.57m. "Kishore Jena has been ruled out of the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 due to an ankle injury. Yashvir Singh has been named as his replacement in the final lineup," the organisers of NC Classic said in an official update. On June 6, Poland's Martin Konecny had replaced Asian Games bronze medallist Genki Dean of Japan as the organisers confirmed the 12-man entry list for the rescheduled event. India's first-ever international javelin competition, originally slated for May 24, was postponed due to military tensions between India and Pakistan. Organised by double Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra in collaboration with JSW Sports and sanctioned by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), the event will feature a world-class field comprising seven top international throwers and five Indian athletes, including Chopra himself. Apart from Konecny, the confirmed international lineup includes two-time world champion Anderson Peters (Grenada), 2016 Olympic gold medallist Thomas Röhler (Germany), 2015 world champion Julius Yego (Kenya), Curtis Thompson (USA), Luiz Mauricio da Silva (Brazil), and Rumesh Pathirage (Sri Lanka). The Indian contingent will feature Asian Championships silver medallist Sachin Yadav, Rohit Yadav, and Sahil Silwal. Initially set to be held in Panchkula, the event has been relocated to the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru due to lighting limitations at the original venue that affected live telecast capabilities. The event, granted Category A status by World Athletics, is considered a "dream project" of Chopra and aims to establish India as a credible host of elite-level athletics events. It had to be postponed following the terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 civilians, including several tourists. According to the organisers, ticket prices will range from Rs 199 to Rs 9,999. Premium experiences include five corporate boxes, each accommodating 15 guests, priced at Rs 44,999. A special stand next to the thrower's runway is available for Rs 9,999, while another premium section in the North Upper Stand, just behind the runway, is priced at Rs 2,999.

Neeraj Chopra Classic: Kishore Jena Out Due To Ankle Injury; Replacement Named

Last Updated: Kishore Jena, Asian Games silver medallist, is out of the Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 due to an ankle injury. Yash Vir Singh replaces him. India's highly anticipated Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025 will miss one of its star attractions, as Asian Games silver medallist Kishore Jena has been ruled out due to an ankle injury. This setback, confirmed just days before the event, has led the organisers to replace Jena with Yash Vir Singh in the elite javelin lineup for the competition scheduled for July 5. Jena, who achieved a personal best of 87.54m to secure silver behind Neeraj Chopra at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, was expected to be a strong contender against the world's best at this landmark event. His absence is a disappointment not only for Indian fans but also for a meet designed to showcase the finest javelin talent on Indian soil. Yash Vir Singh, ranked 41st in the world, steps in with his own credentials, having recorded a personal best of 82.57m at the 2025 Asian Championships in Gumi, Korea. He joins compatriots Neeraj Chopra, Sachin Yadav, Rohit Yadav, and Sahil Silwal in the Indian contingent. What Is Neeraj Chopra Classic? The Neeraj Chopra Classic 2025, India's first international javelin competition, is a collaboration between Neeraj himself, JSW Sports, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), and World Athletics (WA). The event promises to be the highest-tier international athletics meet ever staged in India. Leading the star-studded field will be Neeraj Chopra, the Olympic champion and reigning world titleholder. Joining him are global heavyweights such as Anderson Peters (Grenada), two-time world champion Thomas Rohler (Germany), and Rio 2016 gold medallist Julius Yego (Kenya). Originally scheduled for May 24, the event was postponed due to security concerns and will now take place on July 5 at Bengaluru's Sree Kanteerava Stadium. Expectations remain high as the stage is set for a historic evening of javelin excellence on Indian soil. Neeraj Chopra has prepared for the event named after him by winning his first Diamond League leg in two years. Earlier in the season, he surpassed the 90m mark for the first time in Doha, finishing second. Recently, he won the Ostrava Golden Spike meet with a throw of 85.29m. AFI sets July 31 deadline for mandatory registration of coaches

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has set July 31 deadline for mandatory registration of all the coaches — qualified and unqualified — in the country in its bid to tackle spiralling doping cases, making it clear that non compliance of the directive will lead to their blacklisting. In its latest circular, following its decision in the January Annual General Body Meeting (AGM) to crack the whip on coaches suspected to be involved in doping of their wards, the AFI said that unregistered coaches, regardless of their qualifications, will not be permitted to impart training to athletes. "AFI has decided to register all coaches, qualified or unqualified, who are engaged in training athletes across various venues throughout the country," the national federation said in a circular on Saturday. "Registration with AFI is mandatory for all coaches, regardless of their qualifications as unregistered coaches will not be permitted to impart training to athletes and will not be engaged in any activity of the AFI under any circumstances." Upon successful registration, each coach will be allotted a unique registration number by the AFI and an ID card will be issued. "The relevant details will be communicated to the registered coaches through their respective email addresses." Alarmed by the rising doping cases among Indian track and field athletes, the AFI, in its AGM in Chandigarh in January, has made it compulsory for all coaches to register with it or else they would be blacklisted. In fact, the AFI had started the registration process last year but found that a large number of coaches are reluctant to register. Around 700 to 800 coaches got registered while the AFI expected 10 times this number. That was the reason why the AFI made registration of coaches mandatory from this year. This was all the more important since the AFI is hoping to have more than 40,000 qualified athletes by 2036, and for that it needs coaches of integrity. "Most of the doping in Indian athletics is because of the involvement of the coaches. So, we are making it mandatory for the coaches to register with the AFI. It can't go on like this, else India may be suspended," an AFI official had told PTI. Anti-doping cell to also identify suspected coaches The move for mandatory registration is in addition to the formation of an anti-doping cell to identify coaches suspected to be "involved in doping of their wards" and drawing up a list of training centres which serve as "hideouts" for cheats on the recommendation of a high-powered committee to deal with the menace. The AFI will share this intelligence with the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) and Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) established by World Athletics. The AFI had last year set up a high-powered committee headed by Delhi Police Special Cell Commissioner Sagarpreet Hooda to look into the doping issue. "One of the recommendations of the high-powered committee is to prepare a list of suspected coaches and others involved in doping to know who and which coaches are promoting doping systematically," AFI's legal adviser Parth Goswami, who is also a member of World Athletics' disciplinary and appeal panels, had said. "Another is to prepare a list of centres across India which serve as hideouts and where athletes are trained with the consumption of banned substances. There are many hideouts and centres to avoid out-of-competition tests."
