Galloway and Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere communities to host pop-up events
Pop-up events are being held at biosphere communities across Dumfries and Galloway over the next few weeks.
There are now 14 communities across the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere area in the scheme, with the programme designed to support sustainable tourism, enterprise, learning, and climate resilience, as well as site-specific projects to protect natural and cultural heritage.
Locals and visitors can attend the events to meet members of the biosphere's officer team and find out more about the support available for community groups, local businesses, farming, and land-based enterprise, as well as outdoor leisure and green health opportunities, carbon literacy training, biosphere accreditation schemes and activities for young people.
The biosphere partnership's community officer, Faith Hillier, said: 'Without the engagement and participation of local people the UNESCO biosphere would not even exist and we are always excited to spend time building on the brilliant relationships we have with community councils, development trusts, and local businesses, organisations, schools and special interest groups.
"Our remit is all about responding to local need, creating opportunities, and inspiring stewardship of our unique heritage.
'We're hoping for a great turnout at our upcoming pop-up events and to have conversations that will help our team shape upcoming projects and events to provide maximum benefit to those who live and work in the UNESCO Biosphere.'

Glentrool Hive will host a pop-up between 10am and 3pm on August 8. A' the Arts in Sanquhar will welcome visitors between 11am and 3pm on August 26, with South Machars Community Centre hosting another event from 11am to 1pm on September 2.

Natalie Stainthorpe, from Middlesbrough, said she was quoted around £3,000 for a new kitchen - and decided to do the work herself instead. The 34 year old dental nurse, who recently moved into a new property, was not pleased with the dark kitchen that barely received any light due to an extension on the house. She turned to TikTok tutorials and set a budget of £250 for the makeover, but managed to save even more, spending £100 less than planned. She told What's The Jam: "I just couldn't stand how dark and gloomy it felt – I wanted a fresh, light space where I'd actually enjoy cooking and spending time with my family. The kitchen before was in good condition, but needed a little bit of TLC and I had a vision for the room." She also discussed the cost of a professional renovation: "We did a rough estimate of how much it would cost to completely replace the kitchen from a family friend and we were looking at quite a lot of money - around £2,000 to £3,000 - which was money we didn't have. I decided that I was going to do a budget-friendly makeover instead." To achieve the transformation, Natalie opted for affordable alternatives such as paint and vinyl instead of expensive new units. With the help of her partner and sister, she refreshed the cupboards, wrapped the worktops, and revitalised the handles, reports the Daily Record. Natalie's kitchen before the makeover. (Image: Jam Press/@everythingnatalie_) She found cupboard paint for less than £15 per tin, sourced cost-effective vinyl from B&Q, and purchased all her decorating supplies from B&M to maintain a low budget. The makeover took around a month, squeezed in between shifts and weekends, but the results speak for themselves – the once gloomy kitchen now bright, airy and looking brand new. Natalie added: "Our original budget was £250 – I didn't want to spend more than that, so to come so far under budget was amazing. It was quite a dark room – dark floors, worktops and cupboards and I really wanted to lighten the space up as because of the extension on the back we don't get that much natural light. "We found the vinyl easy on the straight parts of the worktops, around the sink was a bit fiddly, we watched a few tutorials on YouTube on how to do it around the sink to try and minimise any mistakes. My partner Chris actually did most of the sink area as I ran out of patience with it. We repurposed the handles that were already on the units as to replace 14 handles in matte black was quite expensive. We got all our painting supplies from B&M to keep the costs down and budget-friendly – they sell such an amazing range of painting and decorating tools to help with projects like this. "I spent some time researching how to vinyl worktops watching videos on YouTube and TikTok. I also got lots of tips from my friend who has done lots of vinyling to change up her rental home." Natalie documented the transformation on TikTok and revealed the entire project spanned roughly three to four weeks as she tackled it during her free time and weekends. She said: "It definitely wasn't a quick transformation but that was fine with us, we loved seeing it slowly come together. The hardest part for me was probably the vinyling, simply because it took more brain power than the rest, and a lot of patience - something I'm known to not have a lot of. Article continues below "We didn't encounter any mistakes, we just took our time with the project - apart from when I spilt paint on my hob. If I was to start this project again, I wouldn't change anything – I love how we took our time and worked together to get our final look in here. Rome wasn't built in a day and sometimes time and money restrict a quick transformation. "I'm all for realistic budget makeovers and those take time. The difference it's made is amazing, it's now light and airy, it's really brightened up the room, I'm still obsessed with it now two months down the line. We've had such an amazing reaction to our makeover, my friends and family said it looks like a brand new kitchen and it's had such a good response both on my Instagram and TikTok. "My advice would be to take your time, it's okay if you don't get a transformation like this done in a day like you can sometimes see on social media. My second piece of advice to make sure the longevity of your makeover is prep, prep, prep. Spend time prepping your units and surfaces for painting, you'll thank yourself later. It just goes to show, you don't always need a big budget – sometimes a bit of patience and a few clever tricks can completely change your home."

Huge fire at St Mungo's Cumbernauld as fire crews race to church blaze
Fire crews were called to the scene after the inferno broke out at St Mungo's Trinity Parish at around 7.30pm on Saturday. A huge blaze has broken out at a church in Cumbernauld. Fire crews were called to the scene after the inferno broke out at St Mungo's Trinity Parish at around 7.30pm on Saturday. In footage which has been shared with the Record flames can be seen ripping through the iconic B-listed local landmark, which is situated on St Mungo's Road in the town. Plumes of black smoke can be seen filling the sky. Shocked locals can be seen watching on as firefighters tackle the blaze. Eight fire appliances were dispatched to the scene and crews are still in attendance. Local councillor Adam Smith said: "Sadly this evening St Mungo's Church appears to have been destroyed by fire. Emergency services have been in attendance for some time, including the ambulance service incident response unit, and what remains of the building is still on fire. "There is significant smoke coming from the site, blowing in the direction of Carbrain, and those living nearby should keep doors and windows closed. St Mungo's Road is currently closed and emergency services will be in attendance for some time. "The B-listed building was constructed in 1963 and is under the ownership of the Church of Scotland. Get shower screen sparkling in minutes with little-known product that's better than vinegar
Achieving that perfect streak-free shine on your shower glass can be difficult, but one specific product could be just the thing you need. Cleaning the shower screen in your bathroom can be a tough task. And when you finally get it sparkling, it can be just as hard to keep it stain-free. Shampoo, soap, and even water can quickly cling to the screen, making it a grubby mess all over again. Most believe that white vinegar is the ideal product to banish the stains; however, experts say there's another, lesser-known product that works quicker and even better. The hack, which was shared by consumer experts at Which?, on TikTok, shows a dirty shower screen being cleaned. Speaking over the video, the experts said: "Spraying it with vinegar will be effective, but citric acid is even better. It's stronger than vinegar, and brilliant at fighting limescale." All you need to do is mix a couple of spoonfuls of citric acid with hot water in a spray bottle, and apply it liberally all over your dirty shower screen. Then, leave it for a couple of minutes, as this will help the mixture to really seep into the limescale marks. Once you've done that, use a non-scratch sponge to scrub the glass clean, before spritzing with the mixture again and using a squeegee to wipe it off afterwards. But if you don't have a squeegee to hand, don't worry - you can use a microfibre cloth instead for the same effect. You can buy a tub of citric acid from Asda for as little as £1.75, and this is enough to do multiple cleaning jobs. In the video's comments, several people suggested their own tried-and-tested methods for keeping the shower clean. One person said: "Try using 5% of washing up liquid and 5% of cleaning white vinegar in a spray bottle, top it up with water. This helps to maintain the shower after use." Another suggested: "Just squeegee the screen every time you shower, that way there are never water droplets to dry and form [lime]scale." Mrs Hinch fans also recently shared a 'brilliant' cleaning item you can buy from Tesco that 'removes water marks' from shower screens and is 'effortless' to use. You may already have the handy tool at home, as it can be used for a number of different household cleaning tasks. In the 'Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips' Facebook group, Dawn Allison asked: "Best thing to clean shower screen, please? " In response, many people suggested the handy washing-up tool with an attached sponge. Lisa Harris shared a tip: "Mix equal parts of Fairy Liquid and white vinegar in a Dishmatic. Rinse and dry. Removes built-up water marks and soap scum from your shower screen. It makes cleaning effortless." Lynney Jack also said: "Viakal and then scrub side with Dishmatic. Leave on for 20 minutes then rinse off. Use a squeegee every time and no need to clean! ".
