Cocoa exporting giant has become the hottest gold jurisdiction in the fertile region
Two of the world's biggest mining names have tightened their grip on the next generation of West African gold developments, using a string of strategic investments to build a soft empire in the gold exploration hotspots of Côte d'Ivoire and Guinea.
And it has experts, explorers and market analysts asking the question – who's next?
The latest move from Lundin (family fortune +US$7bn) and China's Zijin (market cap US$64bn) has seen the Swedish mining dynasty partner with TSX-listed Montage Gold Corp and Zhaojin Capital – a subsidiary Chinese State-owned gold miner in which Zijin holds a 20% stake – to acquire a collective 28% stake in a $35.6m private placement in Boundiali gold project owner Aurum Resources (ASX:AUE).
Montage, owner of the Kone gold project in Côte d'Ivoire, is in turn owned 19.9% by Lundin and 9.9% by Zijin.
This is where it gets tasty.
Zijin moved into Montage in July last year, where Lundin was already the largest shareholder, supporting a C$180m placement and providing C$125m in debt finance alongside metals streamer Wheaton Precious Metals (a $625m package) to underpin the development of the +300,000ozpa mine.
From that point on, Lundin and Zijin have maintained what appear to be close ties.
Through Montage they've taken positions in TSX-listed Sanu Gold and more recently African Gold (ASX:A1G), the owner of the 452,000oz Didievi project in Côte d'Ivoire.
Lundin and Zijin have also accumulated a combined 10% stake in Predictive Discovery (ASX:PDI), the owner of the 5.5Moz Bankan gold project in Guinea, touted as a potential top-20 African gold mine. Their $69m investment early this year put the cat well and truly among the pigeons after ASX-listed Perseus Mining (ASX:PRU) had planted its flag as the developer's largest shareholder last year.
It also comes after Zhaojin bought out Tietto Minerals, the previously ASX-listed owner of the Abujar mine in Côte d'Ivoire in a $768m cash deal.
Experts say Lundin and Zijin's move to corner the market for West African gold developments shows how quickly Côte d'Ivoire – better known for its cocoa exports – and Guinea have risen among the world's top destinations to explore for and mine the precious metal.
"Ghana was the place where a lot of new gold mines were being opened up 20 or 30 years ago and then it was Burkina Faso where there were 10 new gold mines opened up in the last 15-odd years," junior stock expert John Forwood, CIO of the Lowell Resources Fund (ASX:LRT), told Stockhead.
"Those places have become harder to do business in and I think Côte d'Ivoire is very well endowed geologically with a lot a lot of productive Birimian greenstone.
" But also, it's gone from being a very unstable jurisdiction to a very stable jurisdiction."
Who's next?
There are two big questions for investors now.
Firstly, will any of these strategic chess moves be converted into full scale takeovers, with premiums attached?
Secondly, who else could be on Lundin and Zijin's radar?
Forwood said the well-heeled partners in crime had been 'following' Lowell's investments in the arena.
"Sanu, which is Canadian in Guinea, Predictive Discovery, African Gold and now Aurum, we've only got one listed West African gold company that they haven't gone into which is Desoto Resources (ASX:DES)," he said.
Desoto is the new vehicle of PDI founder Paul Roberts and holds 14 projects in Guinea's Sigiuiri Basin, where AngloGold Ashanti owns the +200,000ozpa Siguiri mine.
"That could be next cab off the rank, although it's very early days there," Forwood added.
Among the largest undeveloped resources in Côte d'Ivoire is Turaco Gold's (ASX:TCG) Afema, where the junior recently grew its resource over 40% t0 3.55Moz. Located in the country's southeast, that included 50.9Mt at 1g/t for 1.6Moz at the Woulo Woulo deposit and 9.1Mt at 610,000oz at the higher grade Jonction.
It's now worth $406m. But at the even earlier stage, with far more leverage at a market cap of $46m, is Many Peaks Minerals (ASX:MPK).
Its Ferké project is an old Predictive Discovery site (before settling on Bankan, the company was a prolific prospect generator), and its Ouarigue prospect is showing all the hallmarks of a potential company maker of its own.
"It's exciting for us," MD Travis Schwertfeger said of the manic corporate activity in Côte d'Ivoire.
"It's probably us and Turaco who are the last two standing projects with development potential that haven't been pulled into a (major's orbit) over the last couple of years.
"I think it gives us a lot of leverage."
More activity in African gold rush
On top of Lundin and Zijin's manoeuvring, Resolute Mining (ASX:RSG) this month announced a deal to acquire two projects in Côte d'Ivoire from AngloGold Ashanti for US$150m, including the advanced Doropo project, with RSG sending some tenements near AngloGold's Siguiri gold mine in Guinea the other way.
It allows Resolute to diversify from Mali, where it was forced to strike a deal with the ruling military junta after CEO Terry Holohan was detained last year.
With authoritarian and unpredictable governments in place in Mali and neighbouring Burkina Faso, both of which have seen coups in recent years, Cote d'Ivoire has become the West African jurisdiction of choice for gold miners.
An election later this year notwithstanding (controversy has reared its head after a citizenship ruling precluded the candidacy of former Credit Suisse CEO Tjidane Thiam), it delivers the same greenstone belts with a fraction of the sovereign risk.
Forwood says its government is also becoming more development friendly, opening forest reserves with similar rocks to the region's major gold mines to exploration.
At the same time, valuations continue run lower than similar companies in Western jurisdictions like WA.
Despite hosting 1.59Moz of gold at its Boundiali deposit and impressive drill hits to be plugged into a future resource upgrade, along with a timeline to a DFS in 2026, Aurum's shares have only lifted 18% in the past year.
A similarly positioned gold stock in WA, Astral Resources (ASX:AAR), is up 100% in the same period, and the gold spot price is up 41% to a near record US$3335/oz.
"Astral and Aurum are a similar order of magnitude, probably similar grade of just over a gram (a tonne). Astral arguably have got a head start in terms of development," Forwood said.
"But Aurum are talking about having a DFS done by mid next year, which is probably not that far behind if at all on Astral."
Astral is trading at around a $220m market cap, with Aurum at about half that level, a valuation gap that points to why Lundin and Zijin are so favourable to West African explorers.
Forwood adds that major changes in China's financial architecture is encouraging its State-owned miners to seek growth, with Chinese official, institutional and retail buying a major reason why gold prices have been surging in recent years.
"There was news couple of weeks ago that the 10 largest pension funds in China are going to invest 1% of their assets in gold and that would be massive. That would be akin to 30% of global production if they did that," he said. Chinese insurance companies have also been allowed to invest in gold.
"One of the key conclusions to draw from this is China is trying to back its currency with gold to present a credible alternate reserve currency to the US dollar," Forwood mused.
" Zhaojin and Zijin and other companies are getting tacit support from the Chinese government to grow their gold production in places like West Africa.
"We're certainly seeing waning influence from France in its former West African colonies, so the Chinese are putting their foot on these opportunities to source gold from jurisdictions which are ... agnostic towards China."
Higher grades
Africa also has a less mature gold industry, which means discovery rates have been far higher in recent years.
According to Crux Investor, 95Moz of gold resources have been found in West Africa since 2004, compared to 61Moz in Canada and 29Moz in Australia.
"West Africa as a region has been the fastest growing gold development region for a long time," Many Peaks' Schwertfeger said.
"A lot of those ounces were coming out of Mali and Burkina Faso in previous years, but now Côte d'Ivoire is really starting to come into its own and Guinea."
Previously on the board of Perseus takeover prey Exore Resources alongside Turaco's Justin Tremain, Schwertfeger says Many Peak's Ferké has also demonstrated high grade potential beyond that typically seen in Côte d'Ivoire.
A standout drill hit announced to the market in March clocked in at 45m at 8.58g/t gold from 104m.
"There's a lot of profitable mines there, but typically running between one and one and a half grammes per tonne," he said.
"Typically there are lower grade gold deposits in the systems in Côte d'Ivoire and we're seeing a bit of a standout higher grade deposit that I think gives potential for much higher margins."

ADX bags $2.6M in quarterly sales as Austrian oil-gas output lifts 23%

ADX Energy has clocked a 23 per cent surge in production for the three months to June from its Austrian oil and gas operations. The company has also flicked the switch on a gas-fuelled exploration blitz by launching plans for a multi-well, shallow drilling program in Upper Austria that could open the cash flow gates. The ASX-listed explorer says total output lifted to 303 barrels of oil equivalent per day (BOEPD) for the past three months, up substantially from 246BOEPD in the March quarter. Despite oil prices sliding 10 per cent for the period, the company was still able to eke out a 4 per cent improvement in revenue to €1.56 million (A$2.76 million). Much of the production growth came from the company's Vienna Basin operations, which averaged 238BOEPD, up from 190BOEPD. The improved performance came after a five-well workover program lifted oil and gas production by 25 per cent and 47 per cent, respectively. The program to repair subsurface equipment and clean up holes was completed in March. ADX also used the quarter to supercharge its gas credentials by hooking up a new carbon dioxide removal unit at its Vienna Basin operations, allowing it to meet strict CO₂ specs for grid operator Netz NÖ without relying on third-party blending. The company says the move has boosted its commercial independence and could pave the way for even greater gas production down the track. In the company's Upper Austrian leases, the Anshof-3 and Anshof-2A wells continued to perform, contributing 66 barrels of oil a day during the quarter compared to 56 barrels in the previous quarter. Notably, the revenue line at the Anshof fields has benefited more from ADX's increased stake in the leases after ex-partner Xstate Resources relinquished its 20 per cent stake in exchange for forgiveness of €547,075 (A$971,000) in unpaid cash calls. The move gave ADX 70 per cent of the broader production area and helped solidify its control of the nearby 3000-barrel-per-day capacity permanent production facility. Directly north of the Anshof field, ADX has been busy locking up land covering two new prospects – dubbed Lind and SGB – seen as excellent appraisal and exploration opportunities. The company says that if these prospects eventually deliver the goods, production could be easily tied back into the processing plant at minimal cost. At the same time, ADX has matured three new drill-ready shallow gas prospects in its ADX-AT-II licence area, including the GOLD prospect, which is on track to spud in late 2025 or early 2026. The company says the GOLD, GRAB and ZAUN prospects offer combined mean prospective resources of 13 billion cubic feet (Bcf) and are near key gas infrastructure, boosting their development economics. The trio of prospects form the first cluster of a broader campaign across seven shallow gas targets estimated to hold a total mean prospective resource of 29Bcf. A farmout process is already under way to support a multi-well drilling program. Meanwhile, the company is gearing up to resume testing at its Welchau-1 oil discovery, pending court resolution of environmental objections. Ongoing work during the quarter defined two new follow-up leads – the deeper Welchau target and the Rossberg prospect to the north. ADX is also preparing to firm up its new offshore Sicily Channel gas acreage. The final anti-corruption compliance hurdle has been cleared and the permit is now expected to be formally granted in the third quarter. Results from historic wells and earlier seismic surveys from the Italian leases have pointed to the potential for sweet gas reservoirs and new data acquisition is being planned. In addition to ramping up near-term production growth, ADX is also eyeing a transition to renewables. It has matured a solar project in the Vienna Basin with 5.4 megawatts capacity and is assessing hydrogen storage options in depleted fields. With growing production, drill-ready gas targets and new acreage in play, ADX is well placed to tap rising European demand for clean, local energy sources. Gold Digger: Producers are in the money as gold prices remain in the stratosphere

Gold producers report strong results thanks to high gold prices Prices remain elevated with potential for more gains Capricorn reported record quarterly cash flow of $85.7m in June 2025 quarter Strong US economic may have tamped some of the excitement around gold but giant Canadian global asset manager Fidelity believes the precious metal could be testing the US$4000/oz mark by the end of this year. This scenario could play out if the Federal Reserve begins to cut rates and the US dollar continues to decline. For ASX gold players, though, what's important is that gold soared in the first four months of this year and have remained elevated within a relatively narrow band since then, a point that has proven beneficial to the bottom lines of the producers while giving certainty to the explorers. A case in point is Capricorn Metals (ASX:CMM), which generated a record quarterly cash flow of $85.7m in the June 2025 quarter, up from $80.8m in the previous quarter. This was due in part to increased gold production from its Karlawinda project, which poured 32,216oz of gold at an all-in-sustaining cost of$1381/oz – representing improvements from last quarter's output of 30,599oz gold at an AISC of $1390/oz. Material movement increased by 18% from the March 2025 quarter, reflecting the ongoing mining productivity efforts that delivered the increase in mining volumes throughout FY2025. For the current financial year, Capricorn expects to produce between 115,000 and 125,000oz of gold at AISC of $1530-1630/oz with growth capital of $30-40m as mining transitions to the Karlawinda expansion project following approval from WA's Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety. Full procurement and early site works will commence in the December 2025 quarter. Meanwhile, Ramelius Resources (ASX:RMS) delivered underlying free cash flow of $207.8m during the June 2025 quarter from production of 73,454 ounces gold at an AISC of $1339/oz, well above its guidance of 62,000-72,000 ounce. The company, which has just finished gobbling up Spartan Resources by way of a scheme of arrangement, also noted a sector-leading AISC margin of $3103/oz for the quarter thanks in no small part to the gold price. It wasn't content with just these achievements, though. Ramelius also announced record annual gold production of 301,664oz at an AISC of $1551/oz, exceeding its upgraded production guidance range of 290,000-300,000oz and the bottom of the upgraded AISC guidance range of $1550-1650/oz. For this financial year, the company expects to spend between $80-100m, up from $47.1m in FY2025, to aggressively target high-grade opportunities at the new enlarged Mt Magnet hub. High gold prices also proved to be a boon for Perseus Mining (ASX:PRU), which saw nominal cash flow of $189m from the sale of 131,242oz of gold at an average sale price of US$2977/oz ($4625.60). This offset the increase in AISC from US$1290/oz in the March 2025 quarter up to US$1417/oz in the June 2025 quarter. Perseus adds that for FY2026, it expects to produce between 400,000 and 440,000 ounces of gold at an AISC range of US$1460-1620/oz. Explorers making waves Sunstone Metals (ASX:STM) has seen strong interest on the market since noting in its quarterly that due diligence and discussions with several parties are continuing. These activities cover a range of potential outcomes, including corporate transactions and farm-out agreements on either or both of Bramaderos and El Palmar gold-copper projects in southern and northern Ecuador. Meanwhile, Askari Metals (ASX:AS2) launched regional exploration at its Nejo gold and copper project in Ethiopia to test for high-grade, shallow mineralisation across two major gold corridors. The Guliso trend includes the Soyoma, Dina, Chago and South Chago gold targets and is open along strike in both directions while Guji-Gudeya includes the drill-ready Guji, Komto 1 and Komto 2 gold targets that have seen minimal follow-up despite confirmed gold mineralisation. (ASX:A8G) field mapping has identified a breccia zone associated with a high-chargeability geophysical anomaly at its May Queen gold project. This breccia is some 600 metres in length with widths of up to 170 metres. Partly infilled old prospector diggings are located at the Southern breccia prospect with reconnaissance rock chip sampling returning elevated copper and gold geochemistry while a second IP geophysical anomaly identified is a blind target under cover. Meanwhile, Latitude 66 (ASX:LAT) will receive $2m in cash and $4m worth of shares in Carnaby Resources after Carnaby exercised its right of first refusal to acquire Latitude 66's 17.5% interest in the Greater Duchess copper gold joint venture in Queensland. It follows Latitude signing a non-binding term sheet in early July to sell the interest to Argonaut Partners and Neon Space. Proceeds will be used to progress its assets in WA and Finland.
