UN warns Gaza families face 'catastrophic hunger'

Middle East Eye2 days ago
The UN's humanitarian affairs office has warned that families in Gaza are enduring 'catastrophic hunger,' with children 'wasting away' and some dying before help can reach them.
In a statement posted on X, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said people scouring for food are being shot at, calling the situation 'unconscionable.' It reiterated that safe, unhindered access for aid is a legal and moral necessity.
The warning came as Israeli forces shot and killed at least 92 people waiting for food aid today. More than 900 have been killed in similar incidents since May, according to Gaza health authorities.

Fifteen more Palestinians die from starvation amid Israeli-imposed famine

Fifteen Palestinians died from malnutrition under an Israeli-imposed famine in the Gaza Strip in the past 24 hours, the Palestinian health ministry said on Tuesday. Four of them were children, including three identified as the infant Yousef al-Safadi, Abd al-Jawad al-Ghalban, 16, and Ahmad Hasanat. One of the adults was identified as 32-year-old woman with special needs, Raheel Rosros. Medical officials confirmed the deaths occurred across Gaza's north and south, underscoring widespread starvation amid severe shortages of food and aid. The latest death bring Gaza's starvation toll to at least 101 Palestinians, including 80 children, according to the Palestinian health ministry. UN says Gaza aid workers collapsing from hunger and exhaustion

Staff with the UN's Palestinian refugee agency (Unrwa) in Gaza are collapsing from hunger and fatigue while trying to carry out their work, the organisation's head said on Tuesday. 'Caretakers, including Unrwa colleagues in Gaza, are also in need of care now,' said Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini. 'Doctors, nurses, journalists, humanitarians - among them, Unrwa staff are hungry. Many are now fainting due to hunger and exhaustion while performing their duties.' The statement was delivered by his spokesperson during a press briefing in Geneva, as aid workers in Gaza continue to face worsening conditions under the Israeli siege.
