Hyderabad SWAN NGO Hosts First-Ever 'Green Carnival' – A Powerful Step Toward Sustainability
Graced by the presence of Mandadi Srinivasa Rao, Corporator of KPHB, as the Chief Guest, the carnival marked a significant moment in the city's growing environmental consciousness. The event began with an energizing Eco-Walk to Meedikunta Lake, bringing together citizens, students, and green activists to symbolically connect with nature and take collective steps toward conservation. The carnival grounds bustled with activity—from plastic-free green stalls and organic food counters to eco-themed games and art installations, each thoughtfully designed to engage, educate, and inspire participants of all ages.
A key highlight of the day was the Green Frontier Awards, which recognised outstanding individuals and organizations who have demonstrated exemplary leadership in environmental conservation. Notable awardees included the Isha Foundation, Uday Krishna Peddireddi, founder of Vata Foundation, Akshay Deshpande of Switcheco, Avinash, founder of FOS (For Our Society), Anuj Jain of AJ Design, Abhishek Agarwal from GoodeeBag, Sharad Chandra from Siri Foundation & Recykal, and Madhulatha, a committed social worker. The awards also celebrated the passion of youth changemakers such as Aravind from Youth for Seva (YFS), and young students Ganesuni Aashritha (Class 8) and Edula Daivyin Reddy (Class 3), for their inspiring contributions to the cause.
In her address, Koyya Sudha Rani, Principal of Fountainhead Global School, appreciated SWAN's efforts and reiterated the institution's commitment to environmental education. 'This event reflects what education should truly achieve—empowering students and communities to act responsibly toward our planet,' she said. She also expressed her eagerness to collaborate with SWAN on future environmental initiatives.
Speaking to the gathering, Meghana Musunuri emphasized that the Green Carnival is not a one-time celebration, but the beginning of a larger movement to embed sustainability into the culture of the city. 'Today's event is a beautiful example of how communities, schools, and organizations can come together for a common purpose. This is just the start—we envision a Hyderabad where sustainability becomes a lifestyle, not an exception.'
The Green Carnival left a lasting impression, encouraging individuals to rethink their consumption habits, adopt eco-friendly practices, and take active roles in safeguarding nature. With its vibrant energy, inclusive spirit, and inspiring stories of changemakers, the event marked a significant milestone in Hyderabad's environmental journey—one that SWAN aims to replicate across other cities and schools in the coming months.
This pioneering event sent out a powerful message: Sustainability is not a passing trend—it is the only way forward. And Hyderabad is ready to lead the change.

Book Review: 'The Sleep Room' is the harrowing story of psychiatric care in the 1960s
Book Review: 'The Sleep Room' is the harrowing story of psychiatric care in the 1960s In the 1960s, a hospital in London held a ward full of women who suffered from a range of mental disorders. The women in this 'sleep room' were subjected to various medical procedures, including electroconvulsive therapy, or ECT, and, at times, a lobotomy, without their consent. In "The Sleep Room: A Sadistic Psychiatrist and the Women Who Survived Him,' Jon Stock tells the harrowing history of the British doctor who subjected them to medical abuse and gives voice to those who survived him. With interwoven firsthand testimony from surviving patients and rigorous research, Stock provides a haunting account of what the psychiatrist did to his patients without their knowledge. Throughout the book Stock also works to hold the medical establishment accountable for the neglect that occurred, but at times can simplify the complexities of psychiatric care during the '60s that most likely led to the abuse endured by many patients. ADVERTISEMENT While the switching between patient stories, history and research can create some confusion for the reader, the patient testimonies allows Stock to deliver an emotionally powerful narrative that is equally as disturbing. Written with nuance and tact, the 'The Sleep Room' is a chilling exposé into psychiatric care that will resonate deeply readers and, especially, true crime fans. ___ AP book reviews: Fernanda Figueroa, The Associated Press

AM Best Assigns Credit Ratings to OneNexus Oklahoma Captive Corp.
OLDWICK, N.J., July 22, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AM Best has assigned a Financial Strength Rating of A- (Excellent) and a Long-Term Issuer Credit Rating of "a-" (Excellent) to OneNexus Oklahoma Captive Corp. (OneNexus) (Oklahoma City, OK). The outlook assigned to these Credit Ratings (ratings) is stable. The ratings reflect OneNexus' balance sheet strength, which AM Best assesses as very strong, as well as its adequate operating performance, limited business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management (ERM). OneNexus is a property/casualty protected cell captive insurer domiciled in Oklahoma that was incorporated in 2021. OneNexus started writing business in 2023 as a special purpose insurer providing contractual liability insurance policies for the decommissioning of oil and gas wells and facilities for its parent company, OneNexus, LLC., to manage risks associated with asset retirement obligations that arise when oil and gas wells are drilled and obligations reside with the owner/operator of the oil and gas wells. OneNexus guarantees a defined benefit amount to the owner/operator of the wells at the time the well is chosen/required to be decommissioned. OneNexus' balance sheet strength assessment is supported by its strongest risk-adjusted capitalization, as measured by Best's Capital Adequacy Ratio (BCAR), and reflects the captive's permanent regulatory capital in the form of a letter of credit pledged by a highly rated reinsurance company. The balance sheet strength assessment also reflects the company's conservative investment portfolio composed of fixed income securities, short-term investments, and cash and cash equivalents. The captive does not currently utilize reinsurance partially offsetting the positive factors above. As a start-up company, OneNexus has limited historical operating results; however, early results are considered adequate as the company posted positive earnings in 2024. Overall, the company's performance to date has benefited from prudent underwriting, its niche business profile and appropriate ERM framework. Growth in the business will depend largely on regulatory requirements requiring financial assurance by oil and gas operators, as well as market acceptance. The stable outlooks reflect AM Best's expectation that OneNexus will execute its business plan as provided while maintaining an overall balance sheet assessment in the very strong range, supported by risk-adjusted capitalization at the strongest level, as measured by BCAR. Dolphins place tight end Darren Waller, guard Liam Eichenberg on PUP list as training camp opens
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — The Miami Dolphins placed recently signed tight end Darren Waller on the physically unable to perform list along with veteran guard Liam Eichenberg as they opened training camp on Tuesday. Waller came out of retirement last month to play on a one-year deal with Miami. He had announced his retirement last June after playing one season for the New York Giants. Advertisement Speaking Tuesday morning with reporters for the first time since the Giants traded him to Miami on July 1, Waller admitted there were times during his career that he lost his passion for football, saying his joy for the game came and went as he battled substance abuse and mental health issues. He added he feels it's possible to find that joy again in Miami. 'That joy has kind of been elusive,' Waller said, 'but I've always found moments where it came back. It's something I have been able to experience, and I feel like that's possible this time around.' He also indicated that his training regimen to be ready for the 2025 season may look different from other players, which in part explains the Dolphins' decision to place him on the PUP list. Advertisement 'I've been in shape and doing a lot of crazy different workout things in my retirement, but it hasn't been football specific movements,' Waller said. 'So there needs to be a solid foundation that's laid before just going out there, because I'm going to want to go 120 percent, so sometimes you have to save me from myself." Eichenberg, a starting guard last season, will likely be a backup in 2025 after the Dolphins signed James Daniels in free agency and selected rookie Jonah Savaiinaea the NFL draft. Also Tuesday, the Dolphins signed offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill and waived quarterback Brett Gabbert. Safety Ifeatu Melifonwu was placed on the non-football injury list. ___ AP NFL:
