Charli Grant engaged: Matildas defender to marry Lachlan Cameron
Throw in living 16,000km apart on opposite sides of the world and Matildas defender Charli Grant said the difficulty level increases substantially.
Grant and fiance Lachlan Cameron had only ever known long distance relationships.
When they went public with their romance Grant was playing in Sweden and Cameron living in Adelaide.
Days after Cameron popped the question in the lead up to Christmas last year, Grant was back on a plane bound for London – to play for Tottenham.
'Long distance was really difficult,' Grant said.
'I think the longest time apart might have been four months. It was hard with the time difference.
'We would only be able to speak just before I went off to training and then he would be asleep by the time I finished training.
'So it was only small doses of the day.
'It would make the time when we got together really special.'
But just two months after the pair were engaged, in December 2024, Cameron packed his bag and moved to London to live with Grant.
'It's been some difficult moments, some really exciting moments with my football and to have him there by my side to just give a cuddle when I need a shoulder to cry on or someone to celebrate with,' Grant said.
'It's really special to have him with me.'
It isn't a luxury all of the Matildas have.
Most have to move abroad in order to play football at a higher level and for better pay.
Fowler ruptured her ACL in April and as it is mid-NRL season Cleary has had to offer his support from the other side of the world.
'It's a tough time for her but I'm also super proud of her, just the way she's attacked it so far,' Cleary said at the time.
'It's sometimes sad that I can't be there with her, just looking after her. But I'm very proud of her.'
With the English WSL season over and Matildas set to play in Perth later this month Grant and Cameron have both made the trip back to Australia.
In between catching up with family and friends and catching every seaside sunset she can, the couple are doing some serious wedding planning.
Grant, fairly, didn't want to reveal too many details.
'We want the wedding to be back home in Australia so it's been hard to get to venues and things like that,' Grant said.

'We are both probably not the best planners so we need some people to help us out with that. Now we are back home, we've had a look at a few venues, it's finally to finally get started.'
Planning the wedding around her football schedule and commitments will likely be the tricky part.
'It's such a funny conversation to have with the venues because they ask what dates are you thinking and I'm like 'I don't know my schedule for my work yet.
'It can be hard to find the time but in the small breaks we get I'm sure we'll be able to organise a day.'
ON THE PITCH
Grant struggled to get on the pitch at Tottenham this season – playing just 396 minutes across 10 matches. It followed not being named in the final 18-women Matildas squad for the Paris Olympics.
'It's been my most difficult year, this past year,' Grant said.
'I think both the national team and club, it's been hard to cement a spot and get good game time.
'I've been working really hard to prove myself and make the most of any opportunity I'm given.'
Tottenham finished 11th on the Women's Super League ladder with just five wins from 22 games. Coach Robert Vilahamn has been subsequently sacked – a new coach is yet to be named.
Matildas have also finally appointed Joe Montemurro – giving Grant a clean slate at both club and national level.
It was lack of game time at Tottenham that ultimately left Grant out of the Olympic squad – named in the extended team instead. She is desperate to avoid the same happening at next year's Asian Cup.
'It's exciting to have two new coaches, Tom (Sermanni) was great and I've learned a lot from Robert as well at Spurs but it's nice in the national team to have a new coach so we can really focus on the Asian Cup.
'It's a really good opportunity to show myself.
'I was really struggling to get game time at Spurs so hopefully with a new coach coming in I can show that I can play. I'll be working really hard this off-season to earn my spot.'
Grant's first opportunity to impress Montemurro will be when the Matildas take on Slovenia and Panama across two two-game series in Perth starting on June 26.

Australia's new wave of swimmers faces resilience test at world titles in Singapore
The new wave of Australian swimmers faces an immediate resilience test at the world titles, head coach Rohan Taylor says. Taylor is overseeing a Dolphins team with a near-quarter of debutants, plus five new coaches, at the championships starting on Sunday in Singapore. "We don't have a footy game every week, we go once this year," Taylor said. "So we have got to make sure that they get the experience. "Next year we will have a multiple competitions that they will be exposed to. "But the first one is the one that will test their resilience." Proven performers and gold-medal winners including Kaylee McKeown, Kyle Chalmers, Cam McEvoy and Mollie O'Callaghan form a core of a team including 10 world championship rookies including 16-year-old breaststroker Sienna Toohey. And the 10-strong coaching team under Swimming Australia's head coach Taylor has been revamped after last year's Paris Olympics with five fresh faces. Taylor was impressed with integration of the newcomers at the Dolphins' camp in Darwin before arriving in Singapore. "Having new people come in — a quarter of the team, half the coaching staff — they slotted in really well, it was really nice to see. That is the first step," he said. "The second step will be when they get into competition, obviously anything can happen. "It's going to be how they manage themselves, manage the ups and downs that come with it. "We have had a pretty consistent group of coaches and athletes over the last cycle that we worked with. This is just a new test for us as a leadership." The titles were vital for Taylor's plans for the ultimate goal, the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. "I want to be able to look at the next three years to ensure we're working on all the key things for LA," he said. "I just want to know where are our gaps, where are our strengths … and what do we need to be doing about it as an organisation." Australia will unveil a revamped women's 4x100m freestyle relay team on night one at the Singapore Sports Hub. The retired Emma McKeon, and Shayna Jack, who missed selection, are missing from the relay team that won Olympic gold last year. Also on night one, Paris silver medallist Elijah Winnington and a rejuvenated Sam Short renew rivalry with Germany's Olympic champion Lukas Martens in the men's 400m freestyle. And with Ariarne Titmus yet to return post-Olympics, Lani Pallister will fly the Australian flag in a highly-anticipated women's 400m freestyle boasting Canadian Summer McIntosh and American legend Katie Ledecky. McIntosh, at Canada's trials last month, regained the 400m free world record from Titmus and also set global records in the 200m individual medley and 400m individual medley. AAP

'Disheartened' AFL star Jy Farrar calls for completion of Halls Creek oval repairs
AFL player Jy Farrar has come out in support of the Halls Creek community and says it is "ridiculous" that the local football oval is unusable. Farrar's comments adds to mounting pressure on the Shire of Halls Creek over its incomplete football oval upgrade. The prolonged closure of the oval, once dubbed the region's "footy factory," has sparked concern from the Gold Coast Suns AFL player who got his start training on the Kimberley oval. After months of delays to planned works, the grounds have been left unsafe and unusable for two years. Farrar grew up in Halls Creek and said there was "no way" he would have made it to the AFL without the oval or the community surrounding it. "Halls Creek, being a footy factory, we can't even do that at the moment." The oval has launched the careers of more than 10 AFL and AFLW players over the past decade. Farrar said it hurt knowing the oval had been abandoned for so long. "It's ridiculous. With the amount of players from Halls Creek lucky enough to get on a list it's disheartening, it's a shame," he said. "We want a safe area where people can come and enjoy football, and hopefully bring joy back to the town that's been missing for the last two years." Beyond sport, the oval has also been a hub of activity and a connection point for people. "Youth crime is rising. I just think because there is no footy, kids are looking at other high adrenaline stuff to do." The delays are "unconscionable" according to former WA premier and member of the previously named North Province, Peter Dowding. "[The state government] tipped half a million [dollars] into the Halls Creek council's coffers and they've not completed the job, and that's a great shame," he said. The WA government committed $595,758 to the project in 2023, as well as an additional $285,000 through the Club Night Lights Program. Mr Dowding said young people in remote areas needed activities to participate in. "If you take away those opportunities you end up increasing levels of lawlessness," he said. "I'm not saying that's applying to everybody, but it's part of the problem when young people have got nothing to do." Mr Dowding said roll-on turf could be a "viable alternative" if the grass could not be grown. "Look at Optus oval, every week there's a roll-on turf being put down there to make sure the surface is adequate," he said. WA sport minister Rita Saffioti said she had instructed the department to work with the local shire to ensure upgrades to the oval could be delivered as soon as "practically possible". "I have been made aware of the delayed progress which I understand is due to previous contractor disputes, under the work commissioned by the shire," she said. "It's disappointing as the works were key in improving the grounds to the benefit of the broader community, which is why the WA government made a contribution." Shire of Halls Creek CEO Sue Leonard said in a statement she understood the concerns raised by the minister regarding delays. "We share the minister's disappointment. Unfortunately, earlier contractor disputes did impact timelines," she said. "We have since taken decisive steps to address these issues and move the project forward. "We welcome the minister's commitment to working collaboratively with the shire, and we remain focused on delivering the upgrades as soon as practically possible for the benefit of the Halls Creek community."
