Fresh drive to free Kolkata footpaths of vagrants

Hans India6 days ago
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has decided to launch a fresh drive to free Kolkata's roads, passenger waiting areas, and footpaths of vagrants.
A source at the KMC said on Sunday that the drive will be held in three phases in August. A letter in this regard has been sent to the Kolkata Police for its cooperation.
It has been learnt that the drive will be held on August 3, August 13, and August 23, and preparations for that have already begun.
"In this campaign, vagrants and footpath dwellers will be identified and sent to night shelters for rehabilitation purposes. Arrangements in this regard are being made," said the KMC source.
The move is aimed at maintaining the beautification of the city. The civic body is trying to speed up the work, given the Durga Puja festival, which will be in the last week of September this year.
"The presence of vagrants in various passenger waiting areas of the city has become a source of inconvenience for the public. This time, a drive will be conducted all over the city to clean such places," said a senior KMC official.
It has been noticed that beggars and vagrants have made a living by setting up tents and arranging their belongings under bus shelters, footpaths, or bridges in important places such as Ultadanga, Moulali, Mallik Bazar, and other places.
"In an attempt to address all such issues, a three-phase drive has been planned throughout August," said the official.
Earlier, such a drive was held in four places in the city, from Mallik Bazar to Ballygunge Outpost, from Gariahat to Hazra crossing, Gopalnagar, Park Circus, and Beck Bagan. Although the drive achieved some success, it failed to remove vagrants from the city's sidewalks.

Law college rape: Cops seek custody of accused

1 2 Kolkata: The Kolkata Police on Friday produced the four accused in the law college gang rape case at a local court and requested police custody for three main accused — Monojit Mishra and his aides, Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee — till Aug 3, and security guard Pinaki Mukherjee till Aug 4. Cops claimed their questioning was necessary to verify the role of each accused by analysing report of electronic evidence and other documents, the final reports of which have arrived. The development came amid Mishra seeking bail for the first time. His counsel also claimed police torture inside prison van. Mukherjee also moved court and sought bail. The order has been kept in abeyance till Aug 5. This is the first time that the Kolkata Police asked for custody of any accused under BNS in the Alipore court — also the first in a heinous crime — after the accused spent over two weeks in judicial custody, said sources. Cops had pre-poned the production, the original date being fixed on Aug 5. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata

Is arrested model-actress Shanta a Bangladeshi spy? Police investigates

KOLKATA: Activities of Bangladeshi model and actress Shanta Pal, who has been arrested in Kolkata, are reminiscent of the activities of Jyoti Malhotra, who was arrested on suspicion of being a Pakistani spy, police sources said. Shanta lived a luxurious life as Jyoti. She too travelled to many places in India, including the Nathula Pass, near the China border in Sikkim which raised suspicion about her, a Kolkata Police official said. "Jyoti Malhotra is accused of spying for Pakistan. Is Shanta doing the same for Bangladesh? We have been trying to ascertain this in the investigation," the official added. According to police sources, Shanta Pal, a Bangladeshi citizen, came to India in 2023. Since then, she has been staying here. Both her visa and passport have expired.
