Asian markets mixed as China's economy meets forecasts
HONG KONG: Markets were mixed Tuesday (July 15) as positive Chinese economic data was offset by weak consumer spending, while optimism that governments will hammer out deals to avoid the worst of Donald Trump's tariff threats provided support. Beijing said gross domestic product expanded 5.2 per cent in April-June thanks to a surge in exports as businesses front-loaded shipments ahead of the US president's stiff levies, and after the superpowers agreed to work on a long-term pact. While the reading was slightly slower than the first quarter, it was in line with forecasts in an AFP survey and comes after figures on Monday showed exports soared more than expected in June, including a strong recovery in goods sent to the United States. Meanwhile, industrial output came in above expectations. However, Tuesday's reports showed efforts to boost consumer activity continue to fall flat, with retail sales expanding 4.8 per cent last month, well below estimates in a Bloomberg study and highlighting the work leaders face in kickstarting the economy. China's recovery has been hamstrung by a bruising trade war with the United States, driven by Trump's sweeping tariffs, though the two de-escalated their spat with a framework for a deal at talks in London last month. But observers warn of lingering uncertainty. "The national economy withstood pressure and made steady improvement despite challenges," National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) deputy director Sheng Laiyun told a news conference. "Production and demand grew steadily, employment was generally stable, household income continued to increase, new growth drivers witnessed robust development, and high-quality development made new strides," he said. And the US president upped the ante Monday, warning Russia's trading partners - which include China - that he will impose tariffs reaching 100 per cent if Moscow fails to end its war on Ukraine within 50 days. After a strong start to the day, Hong Kong pared an early rally while Shanghai dipped into negative territory. Elsewhere, Tokyo, Sydney, Singapore, Wellington, Taipei and Jakarta rose, with Seoul and Manila in the red. Trump also Monday said he will impose antidumping duties on most imports of fresh tomatoes from Mexico, with the US Commerce Department accusing its neighbour of engaging in unfair trade. That came after he said he would hit the country and the European Union with 30 per cent levies, having announced a slew of measures against key partners last week if deals are not struck by August 1. However, analysts said investors viewed the warnings as negotiating ploys rather than a genuine move, citing previous threats that were later rowed back. The mixed performance in Asian markets followed a healthy day on Wall Street, where the Nasdaq hit another record high. Bitcoin edged down after hitting a record high above US$123,200 on Monday thanks to optimism over possible regulatory changes for crypto assets in the United States. - AFP

Trump warns Russia to end Ukraine war in 50 days or face 100pc tariffs
WASHINGTON, July 15 — US President Donald Trump told Russia yesterday to end its Ukraine war within 50 days or face massive new economic sanctions, as he laid out plans for new infusions of weaponry for Kyiv via Nato. Trump said he was 'very, very unhappy' with Vladimir Putin, underlining his insistence that his patience had finally snapped with the Russian leader's refusal to end the deadly conflict. 'We're going to be doing very severe tariffs if we don't have a deal in 50 days, tariffs at about 100 pe rcent,' Trump said during an Oval Office meeting with Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte. The Republican added that they would be 'secondary tariffs' that target Russia's remaining trade partners—seeking to cripple Moscow's ability to survive already sweeping Western sanctions. Russia's top trading partner last year was China, accounting for about 34 percent, followed distantly by India, Turkey and Belarus, according to the Russian Federal Customs Service. Trump and Rutte also unveiled a deal under which the NATO military alliance would buy billions of dollars of arms from the United States—including Patriot anti-missile batteries—and then send them to Ukraine. 'This is really big,' said Rutte, as he touted a deal aimed at easing Trump's long-held complaints that the US is paying more than European and Nato allies to aid Ukraine. Germany, Canada, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Britain were among the buyers helping Ukraine, added the Nato chief. 'If I was Vladimir Putin today and heard you speaking... I would reconsider that I should take negotiations about Ukraine more seriously,' said Rutte. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced he had spoken with Trump and was 'grateful' for the arms deal. 'Very long time' German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Berlin would play a 'decisive role' in the new weapons plan. But EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said Trump's sanctions deadline was too far into the future. 'Fifty days is a very long time if we see that they are killing innocent civilians every day,' she said. Trump attempted a rapprochement with Putin shortly after starting his second term, having campaigned on a pledge to end the Ukraine war within 24 hours. His pivot towards Putin sparked fears in Kyiv that he was about to sell out Ukraine, especially after Trump and his team berated Zelensky in the Oval Office on February 28. But in recent weeks Trump has shown increasing frustration with Putin, as the Russian leader stepped up missile and drone attacks to record levels instead of halting his invasion. Washington has also U-turned from an announcement earlier this month that it would pause some arms deliveries to Kyiv. Trump said his wife Melania had helped change his thinking about Putin, a man for whom he formerly expressed admiration. 'I go home, I tell the First Lady, 'you know, I spoke to Vladimir today, we had a wonderful conversation,'' Trump said. 'And she said, 'Oh really? Another city was just hit.'' He added of Putin: 'I don't want to say he's an assassin, but he's a tough guy.' Better late than never US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, who are pushing a bipartisan bill on Russia secondary sanctions, praised Trump's 'powerful' move. 'The ultimate hammer to bring about the end of this war will be tariffs against countries, like China, India and Brazil, that prop up Putin's war machine,' they said in a statement. Trump's special envoy Keith Kellogg arrived in Kyiv on Monday for what Zelensky called a 'productive meeting.' One Ukrainian soldier deployed in the war-scarred east of the country, who identified himself by his call sign Grizzly, welcomed Trump's promise of fresh air defense systems. 'Better late than never,' the 29-year-old told AFP. Russian forces meanwhile said on Monday they had captured new territory in eastern Ukraine with the seizure of one village in the Donetsk region and another in the Zaporizhzhia region. Its forces also killed at least three civilians in the eastern Kharkiv and Sumy regions on Monday, Ukrainian officials said. In Kyiv, Zelensky also proposed a major political shake-up, recommending economy minister Yulia Svyrydenko take over new prime minister, and appointing current premier Prime Minister Denys Shmygal as defense minister. — AFP

Dollar holds near 3-week high before CPI; bitcoin eases back from record peak
TOKYO: The dollar hovered near a three-week high versus major peers on Tuesday as traders awaited the release of US inflation data later in the day that could provide clues on the path for monetary policy. The US currency was also buoyed by elevated Treasury yields, with investors weighing a potential exit of Jerome Powell from the Federal Reserve as President Donald Trump continued his criticism of the central bank chairman. Currencies showed little reaction to data showing China's economy grew 5.2 per cent last quarter, slightly topping analysts' forecasts. Bitcoin drifted further from Monday's all-time peak of US$123,153.22 following a seven-day, 14 per cent surge as investors bet on long-sought legislative policy wins for the cryptocurrency industry this week. It was changed hands at around US$118,215 as of 0240 GMT. The dollar was little changed at 147.68 yen, after earlier rising to the highest since June 23 at 147.89 yen. The dollar index, which tracks the currency against the yen and five other major rivals, stood at 98.050, not far below the overnight peak of 98.136, the highest since June 25. The euro edged up slightly to US$1.1671 after slipping to US$1.1650 on Monday for the first time since June 25. Fed Chair Powell has said he expects inflation to increase this summer as a result of tariffs, which is seen keeping the US central bank on hold until later in the year. Economists polled by Reuters expect headline inflation to increase to 2.7 per cent on an annual basis, up from 2.4 per cent the prior month. Core inflation is expected to rise to 3.0 per cent, from 2.8 per cent. "Should inflation fail to materialise or remain steady, questions may arise regarding the Fed's recent decision not to cut rates, potentially intensifying calls for monetary easing," James Kniveton, senior corporate FX dealer at Convera, wrote in a client note. "Calls from the White House for leadership changes at the Fed may increase." Trump on Monday renewed his attacks on Powell, saying interest rates should be at 1 per cent or lower, rather than the 4.25 per cent to 4.50 per cent range the Fed has kept the key rate at so far this year. Fed funds futures traders have been pricing in 50 basis points of interest rate cuts by year-end, with the first reduction expected in September. "If Powell leaves, we expect the (US Treasury yield) curve to steepen sharply, with the short-end factoring in front-loaded rates cuts," DBS analysts wrote in a note. "Meanwhile, the loss of confidence in price stability should translate into sharply higher 10-year and 30-year yields." China's economic growth topped market forecasts in the second quarter - even as it slowed slightly from the prior three months - in a sign of resilience against US tariffs. At the same time, analysts warned of underlying weakness and rising risks that will ramp up pressure on Beijing to roll out more stimulus. The Chinese yuan was flat at 7.1728 per dollar.
