Midrand SPCA invites residents to crucial AGM

Midrand SPCA invites residents to crucial AGM

The Citizen2 days ago
The Midrand SPCA plays a vital role in ensuring the well-being of animals in the community.
As the only organisation governed by an act of parliament dedicated to animal welfare in Midrand and Midstream, it holds a unique and essential position in the area.
The SPCA's upcoming annual general meeting (AGM) for 2025, scheduled for July 26, is particularly important, as the society seeks solutions for its financial challenges.

The AGM will take place at the SPCA in Glen Austin at 09:00, providing a platform for the community to engage with the organisation, discuss the financial support required, and highlight achievements and initiatives accomplished over the past year.
Brenda Lucas, the society's chairperson, emphasised the necessity of sustained funding to fulfill its legal mandate, warning that, without financial support, the society's ability to operate and effect positive change is at risk.
The society's inspectorate team, led by dedicated general manager Pam Pretorius, conducts proactive inspections, where education plays a crucial role. Lucas explained that inspectors regularly carry out outreach programmes and offer community service opportunities for high school learners, as well as educational initiatives at schools and during outreach events.

Despite these efforts, the primary challenge facing the society continues to be financial. 'The Midrand SPCA serves our community and animals on a daily basis. We receive no government funding and rely solely on our community to keep us operational,' Lucas explained. 'By supporting us with financial contributions, donations of goods, self-sustainable initiatives, and funding of key critical projects, we can continue to make an impactful difference in Midrand and Midstream, and fulfill our mandate in the prevention of cruelty to animals. As the only organisation in this community that is governed by this act of parliament, it is crucial that we have the funding to continue this vital work.'
During the AGM, SPCA members will elect a management committee responsible for overseeing the society's operations. These committee members must adhere to specific protocols and demonstrate a commitment to preventing cruelty to animals.
All members of the public are welcome to attend the meeting, however, only paid members will be allowed to vote.

Little girl's big idea warms winter for Johannesburg orphans

In a story that weaves together kindness and community, 64 orphans at the Johannesburg Children's Home in Observatory were gifted more than just clothing this winter. They received hand-sewn hoodies stitched with love, purpose, and a personal message from the very person who made them. The gesture comes courtesy of Able Stitch, an NPO dedicated to empowering vulnerable and unemployed individuals through skill development. From the beginning, the goal was not only to create jobs, but also to inspire a deeper social impact. Read more: Orphans smile bright The spark behind this initiative came from an unexpected source. During one of Able Stitch's earliest planning meetings, five-year-old Emily Strydom, daughter of founder and managing director Lizzy Strydom, offered a simple yet powerful idea. She suggested that the individuals being trained could learn to make hoodies and donate them to children in orphanages. What began as a child's thought has since blossomed into a movement. Under Able Stitch's social impact initiative, trained individuals are taught the art of sewing while contributing to something meaningful. The result is a double impact. Those who once faced poverty or homelessness are now creating garments that bring comfort to children with no families of their own. 'This is the fourth orphanage we've visited so far,' said Strydom. 'Our goal is to warm 1 000 children this winter. We rely on donations to make it happen, but today we're proud to have reached 64 more little ones.' The excitement at the Johannesburg Children's Home was unmistakable. Children beamed with joy as they pulled on their new hoodies, each labelled with a handwritten note of encouragement. 'It's a beautiful full-circle moment,' said Strydom. 'One child's idea, helping other children, made possible by a community of people trying to turn their own lives around.' Able Stitch continues to gather support, one hoodie and one heartwarming moment at a time. If winter is a season of survival, then this project is proof that hope, stitched together by many hands, can be the warmest gift of all. Local retailers donate to Bombani shelter ahead of Mandela Day

As Mandela Day edges closer, and organisations ramp up efforts to give back to their communities, Southern Africa Partners (SnAPSA) and two local supermarkets spared a thought for the society's most vulnerable citizens who are affected by the alarming rate of abuse against women and children. On July 14, the community-based non-profit organisation SnAPSA went to Shoprite in Alexandra Plaza and Boxer at the Pan Africa Shopping Centre to collect items donated for the benefit of women and children at the Bombani Shelter—a haven for abused women and children. Shoprite donated preloved clothes, while Boxer donated food items to the value of R600. She emphasised the importance of their participation, noting that it means a lot to both the store and the staff. 'There are people out there who do not have food or clothes. For the mere fact that we, as Shoprite, can ensure that at least a single child or woman gets clothes to wear, it means a lot. Those who donated, we know that at least one or two children will be able to get clothes,' she noted. She also lauded SnAPSA for the initiative and for involving them in it ahead of Mandela Day. 'I am also grateful to have a team behind me who donated their preloved clothes. I wish we could do more. All I can say [to SnAPSA] is please remember us again,' she said. Boxer's assistant store manager, Gift Maila, also expressed pride in their involvement in the initiative. 'We pride ourselves on giving back to the community. That is our motto; we strive to be the people's champion within the communities we serve. So, us doing this today, giving back, is what we do.' One of the mentors at SnAPSA, Zamashasha Hlengwa, expressed gratitude to the stores for their donations. Hlengwa noted that they will give the donated items to women and children at Bombani on July 17, ensuring that they have a fun day.
