Rahul Gandhi marks 1 yr as LoP, reaffirms commitment to Constitution and people

New Delhi, July 2 (UNI) Marking the completion of one year as Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi today highlighted his journey, sharing key moments, personal experiences, and his continued efforts to uphold the Constitution and amplify the voice of the people.
In a social media post, Gandhi highlighted the central themes of his tenure so far including defending democratic values, presenting a clear economic vision for the country and connecting with citizens across diverse communities.
"As I complete one year as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, I am sharing with you the memories, experiences, and my ongoing fight to protect the Constitution," he wrote.
Gandhi invited the public to revisit his parliamentary speeches, which he said outline his vision for India's economy and shed light on the factors that led to the INDI alliance's success in the 2024 general elections.
He also underscored his extensive outreach efforts, citing interactions with a wide cross-section of society, from the conflict-affected people of Manipur to farmers, Anganwadi workers, and Dalit youth across the country.
Meanwhile, the Congress through a newsletter said that Rahul Gandhi had centered his role as LoP around 'amplifying public concerns', especially those of the most marginalised communities. Over the past year, he has consistently highlighted critical national issues from advocating a nationwide caste census to demanding justice for the victims of violence in Manipur and fighting for the rights of Dalit youth, farmers and Anganwadi workers.
According to Congress, Gandhi's sustained advocacy compelled the government to take significant policy actions, including ordering a nationwide caste census, fulfilling a long-standing demand for greater social justice; imposing President's Rule in Manipur, amid continued unrest and violence in the state and withdrawing a controversial lateral entry notification, showcasing his effectiveness in holding the government accountable.
The party said Rahul Gandhi's first year in office was marked by extensive public engagement. He visited 16 states, held 18 press conferences, addressed over 60 rallies, took part in more than 35 official events, delivered 16 speeches in Parliament, and participated in over 115 public interactions.
Looking ahead, the Congress said Rahul Gandhi will continue to lead with a 'politics of love,' grounded in constitutional values and democratic principles. The party emphasised that Gandhi's commitment to protecting India's democratic fabric remains firm.
'As Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi has been the voice of the 90 percent of those whose concerns have often been sidelined. He has brought their issues to the forefront of national discourse, both inside and outside Parliament,' the party said.
Moreover, the party also underlined that Gandhi's leadership would continue to focus on unity, justice, and accountability.

Trump's ‘Big, Beautiful Bill' will soon become law. Republicans who tore into it now need to hawk it to voters

Trump praised the bill at an event in Iowa, while House Speaker Mike Johnson called it one of the most complex and significant pieces of legislation in US history. President Donald Trump's wide-ranging domestic policy bill, passed by Congress this week, is facing growing criticism over its planned cuts to Medicaid. The bill, which is is now just hours away from becoming law, includes nearly $1 trillion in Medicaid reductions over a decade, a move Democrats are using to launch early attacks ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. For months, some Republican lawmakers had raised concerns. North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis said the cuts were 'inescapable,' while Missouri Senator Josh Hawley said targeting Medicaid was 'a mistake.' Nebraska Representative Don Bacon had earlier said he would not back a bill with over $500 billion in cuts but explained he ended up supporting it due to other tax and defence provisions.

‘Conduct SIT probe in MGNREGA, Nal se Jal schemes, remove minister Khabad from post': Congress writes to Gujarat governor

DEMANDING 'an impartial investigation into the state-wide corruption in MGNREGA and Nal Se Jal' schemes, besides removal of Minister Bachubhai Khabad from his post, Leader of Congress Legislative Party Amit Chavda submitted a written representation to Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat on Friday. Stating that the 'state government's will to eradicate corruption seems to be lacking', Chavda, who was accompanied by Congress MLAs Kantibhai Kharadi, Jignesh Mevani, Shailesh Parmar, Lalit Vasoya and Amrutji Thakor, along with other party leaders, stated in the letter that there is an urgent need for the Governor's intervention. 'An SIT (Special Investigation Team) should be formed with people holding judicial positions to conduct an impartial investigation into the widespread scam of crores in the MGNREGA and Nal se Jal schemes across the state. Strict action should be taken against those involved in this scam. Therefore, it is requested to order immediate and appropriate action to prevent the open loot of public tax money to eradicate corruption,' the demand stated. Chavda stated, 'The Congress-led UPA government enacted the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in 2005, ensuring 100 days of employment per year. But for the last few years, the MGNREGA law in Gujarat has become (a means) to fill the coffers of office-bearers and officials with connivance of the government machinery… After our repeated written representations, question-answer sessions and debates in the assembly besides protests, the government conducted an investigation into corruption in a few villages.' The Congress has been repeatedly alleging corruption in the MGNREGA scheme for the last few weeks. 'In the investigation of Devgadh Baria and Dhanpur talukas in Dahod district, corruption worth more than Rs 100 crore has been revealed. The direct involvement of the family of state government minister Khabad has been revealed. Even though it has been many days since the corruption came to light…, the state government is not removing him from the cabinet. By misusing his position and power, he is misleading the investigation and protecting his accomplices,' stated the letter. A few weeks ago, two sons of Khabad, Balvantsinh and Kiran, were arrested for alleged irregularity under the MGNREGA. Khabad is the Minister of State for Panchayat in Gujarat government. 'In the remaining talukas of Dahod district, including Fatepura, Sanjeli, Jhalod, and Singvad, corruption worth crores has also taken place in MGNREGA. Bills have been paid repeatedly without doing work on the spot or (payment has been made) to ghost job cards. But despite complaints and evidence being given, no investigation has been done till date,' the letter submitted to the Governor stated. The Congress leaders alleged similar corruption in 26 villages of Jambughoda taluka in Panchmahal. 'Not only in Dahod, Panchmahal, Narmada and Bharuch, in the entire Gujarat, corruption scam worth crores of rupees is going on with the connivance of cabinet members and senior officials in Gandhinagar by creating a systematic network in the MGNREGA scheme. There is no will in the government to stop corruption. Therefore, your intervention is urgently needed and an SIT of persons sitting on judicial and constitutional positions should be formed to investigate the corruption in MGNREGA in the entire state,' the letter addressed to the Governor stated. Chavda has also alleged 'scam worth crores of rupees' in the 'Nal Se Jal' scheme in the state. 'Even after big announcements that the people of Gujarat will get 'Nal Se Jal' (water supply through taps) in every house, the Water Supply Department has been benefiting from the budget of crores of rupees from the tax money of the people. Despite complaints with evidence from many districts across Gujarat, no proper investigation or strict action has taken place with regard to corruption in the scheme. To protect the leaders and senior government officials, the government is taking action against lower-ranking officials,' he alleged in the statement.

Trump's domestic policy bill draws fire over Medicaid cuts, as democrats begin campaign blitz

Democrats are now highlighting those Republican warnings. 'It's 2018 all over again,' said Democratic Representative Jared Golden of Maine, who holds a seat in a pro-Trump district. 'I would never vote for these Medicaid cuts. Never,' Golden told CNN. A June poll by Quinnipiac University found that 53% of voters opposed the bill. While Republicans argue the cuts mostly involve new work requirements for able-bodied adults without dependents, Democrats say millions could eventually lose coverage. The Congressional Budget Office estimates around 12 million people could lose health insurance by 2034 due to changes in Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act. Trump praised the bill at an event in Iowa, while House Speaker Mike Johnson called it one of the most complex and significant pieces of legislation in US history. Speaking after signing the bill, Johnson said it was among 'the top two or three' bills ever passed in Congress, according to CNN.
