Christian McCaffrey feels 'great' entering camp. Why 49ers really need RB to stay healthy

USA Today14-07-2025
A run of three consecutive conference championship appearances and two straight NFC West titles all came crashing down last season for the San Francisco 49ers. Which leads to the question: Has the 49ers' Super Bowl window closed?
The answer to the question might depend on health.
The 49ers were ravaged by injuries a season ago. A total of 16 players ended the year on injured reserve as the team limped to a 6-11 record and last place finish in the NFC West.
Running back Christian McCaffrey, the 49ers' best skill position player, was one of the most notable players hurt during San Francisco's injury plagued season. He missed San Francisco's first eight games due to calf and Achilles injuries. He returned in November yet sustained a season-ending PCL injury in Week 12.
Injuries aren't new to McCaffrey. He was limited to only 10 games from 2020-2021 because of injuries when he was on the Carolina Panthers before being traded to San Francisco in 2022.
McCaffrey is one of the best running backs in the NFL when healthy (and popular fantasy football pick). Can the 29-year-old running back evade the injury bug this season?
As the 49ers prepare for training camp, McCaffrey says he's healthy.
'I feel great. This offseason, I've spent a lot of time building back a base (and) starting from scratch. A lot of it was rehab,' McCaffrey said at 49ers' minicamp. 'I wanted to put myself in a position where I didn't miss a day of OTAs and I could practice and play football again, be healthy and not miss a day. I did that and now it's kind of kick back up the training again. I feel great.'
The 49ers need McCaffrey to return to his 2023 form where he led league in rushing yards (1,459), touches (339), yards from scrimmage (2,023) and touchdowns from scrimmage (21) on the way to winning the 2023 NFL Offensive Player of the Year award. San Francisco lost several key players this offseason, a list that includes Dre Greenlaw, Charvarius Ward, Deebo Samuel, Talanoa Hufanga, Javon Hargrave and Leonard Floyd
San Francisco's roster shakeup puts more of an onus on the team's star players such as McCaffrey to perform at a high level if the club wants to return to being a playoff contender.
'You guys saw in 2023 how important he is to what we want to be as an offense. He's an elite player and we're going to do everything we can to get him the ball, as much as we can. And yeah, his health is really important. He's one of our central players on offense,' 49ers offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak said this offseason. 'We want to hand him the ball, we want to throw him the ball, how he changes defenses when he's on the field for how they have to play us in certain coverages, right? Putting more guys in the box to stop the run, it has an effect on the opponents.'
Can the 49ers get vintage McCaffrey in 2025? Head coach Kyle Shanahan is optimistic.
'He is a psycho in a good way and so like he does everything imaginable every single day,' Shanahan said in June. 'Last year he couldn't because he was battling injury all last year. And this year he is healthy, so he is right back to being who he is always been and it's really fun to watch.'
Is the demise of the 49ers premature? The 49ers have the NFL's easiest strength of schedule based on their opponents' winning percentage from 2024. And if McCaffrey and the team's other core players can stay healthy, it might be too soon to write them off.

Colin Cowherd says Sean Payton Effect's in full swing with Broncos, Saints

Colin Cowherd is all in on Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos' turnaround. So much so, he believes that the Broncos trending up, while the New Orleans Saints are trending down, represent the 'Sean Payton Effect.' Cowherd has long been a friend and supporter of Payton, having him on the show in his one year out of football in 2022. When the Broncos lured him back to the sidelines the following year, they did so with the expectation that Payton would lead a turnaround for the franchise. Payton then landed Bo Nix in the 2024 NFL draft and helped lead the Broncos to a 10-7 record and a spot in the AFC playoffs. If you let Cowherd tell it, the Broncos being in their position and Payton's former team, the Saints, falling out of consistent Super Bowl contention, isn't a coincidence. The Saints have not made the NFL playoffs since Payton left, which has been three consecutive seasons. So Cowherd may be on to something. Check out the segment below.

Wisconsin alumnus included in ESPN's top off-ball linebacker ranking for 2025 NFL season

Former Wisconsin football standout Zack Baun was included in ESPN's list of the top 10 off-ball linebackers ahead of the 2025 NFL season earlier this month. Baun is the third former Badger to receive a position on the outlet's preseason positional rankings, joining two-time Doak Walker Award winner Jonathan Taylor (running backs) and defensive legend T.J. Watt (edge rushers). The off-ball linebacker list is powered by a feedback from dozens of NFL league executives, coaches and scouts, which ESPN then parlays into a top 10 ranking based on their vote totals, composite average position and information from interviews. Following that method, the outlet listed Baun as the No. 3 off-ball linebacker in the NFL ahead of this coming season. At No. 3, Baun is sandwiched between Baltimore Ravens superstar Roquan Smith (No. 2) and Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl winner Nick Bolton (No. 4). Four-time first-team All-Pro Fred Warner earned the top spot, followed by Washington Commanders' rising star Frankie Luvu (No. 5), Chicago Bear Tremaine Edmunds (No. 6), Buccaneers veteran Lavonte David (No. 7), second-year Dallas Cowboy DeMarvarion Overshown (No. 8), Denver Bronco Dre Greenlaw (No. 9) and New York Jet Quincy Williams (No. 10). ProFootballFocus' list of the top 32 linebackers ahead of 2025 had Baun at No. 2 behind only Warner, who is widely considered the best linebacker of his decade. Entering his second year in Philadelphia, it appears as if Baun is poised to become a household name at this stage of his career. The Wisconsin native's numbers convey the same message. In 16 starts for the Eagles, who hoisted the Lombardi Trophy in a dominant win over the Chiefs this winter, the former Badger registered 151 tackles, 11 for loss, five quarterback hits, 3 1/2 sacks, four pass deflections, five forced fumbles and an interception. By the season's end, Baun was named a first-team All-Pro, a Pro Bowler and a finalist for the 2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award alongside T.J. Watt, Myles Garrett, Trey Hendrickson and Patrick Surtain II (winner). In the postseason, Baun was responsible for 33 total tackles (20 solo), two tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries, two interceptions and one forced fumble across four playoff games. In Super Bowl 59, he notched a team-best seven tackles (three solo) and a crucial interception on three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes. Baun's explosive year led to a three-year, $51 million contract extension with Philadelphia this offseason. Baun's Eagles will begin their season against the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 4 at Lincoln Financial Field. One NFL analyst says Steelers can win the Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers

The Pittsburgh Steelers are betting heavily on new starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers. General Manager Omar Khan has already said this team was built to win the Super Bowl this year. Not to just make the playoffs, not just to get a playoff win. This Steelers team will go exactly as far as Rodgers can take them. Rodgers will be the fourth different starting quarterback in the last four seasons for the Steelers to start a year since Ben Roethlisberger retired at the end of the 2021 season. Despite being 41 years old, at least one NFL analyst and former player believes if Rodgers plays well, the Steelers can win the Super Bowl. That would be Mark Sclereth. He talked about the Steelers on the Rick Eisen Show and said the Steelers are one of the 10 or 12 teams that can win the Super Bowl this season but it will depend on Rodgers recapturing his youth and having a big season. Rodgers threw for 229 yards per game last season with the New York Jets. Meanwhile, the Steelers quarterbacks threw for only 192 yards per game in 2024. If the Steelers are going to be a legitimate Super Bowl contender, it's going to take a monumental effort by Rodgers.
