‘KPop Demon Hunters' Ends Hit Soundtrack Drought
The drought is officially over. By entering the Billboard 200 at No. 8, KPop Demon Hunters becomes the highest-charting soundtrack since Wicked ranked No. 8 on the chart dated Jan. 25, on its way down from its No. 2 peak. More from Billboard Where Are the Blockbuster Soundtracks? I Just Risk It All' This ends a nine-week stretch in which there wasn't a single soundtrack in the top half of Billboard's flagship albums chart. Things were particularly bleak the last two weeks, when the highest-charting soundtrack (Twisters: The Album) was way down at No. 175. That album had debuted and peaked at No. 7 in August 2024, but was leading Billboard's Top Soundtracks chart in recent weeks largely because there was no fresh competition. There is now. The KPop Demon Hunters soundtrack was released through Republic Records on June 20, the same day the film premiered on Netflix. The album was preceded by Twice's version of 'Takedown' as the lead single. KPop Demon Hunters is the highest-charting soundtrack from an animated film since Metro Boomin's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ranked No. 7 on the Billboard 200 dated July 1, 2023, on its way down from its No. 5 peak. Billboard's Keith Caulfield reports that it's the first soundtrack from a Netflix program to reach No. 1 on Top Soundtracks in more than two years — since Stranger Things: Soundtrack from the Netflix Series, Season 4, re-entered atop the list dated Nov. 19, 2022. And when it rains, it pours: Another hot soundtrack, F1: The Album, was released on June 27 and is expected to debut high on next week's Billboard 200. Five singles have been released from the album – Don Toliver's 'Lose My Mind' (featuring Doja Cat), Rosé's 'Messy,' Myke Towers' 'Baja California,' Tate McRae's 'Just Keep Watching' and Ed Sheeran's 'Drive.' If both KPop Demon Hunters and F1: The Album appear in the top 10 on next week's Billboard 200, it will mark the first time that two soundtracks have appeared in the top 10 simultaneously since the chart dated Jan. 8, 2022, when Encanto ranked No. 7 and the Vince Guaraldi Trio's legendary soundtrack from 1965's A Charlie Brown Christmas ranked No. 8. F1: The Movie was the weekend's top-grossing film in the U.S. and Canada, with an estimated gross of $55.6 million, according to It bumped How to Train Your Dragon, the boxoffice leader the two previous weekends, down to No. 2. Suge Knight Recalls Afeni Shakur's Final Message to Doctors Treating 2Pac After 1996 Shooting: ‘Let Him Go'
Suge Knight recalled his final moments by 2Pac's side in September 1996 while chatting from behind bars with People in a story published Tuesday (July 1). The Death Row honcho's life was forever changed the night his BMW was peppered with shots at the intersection of East Flamingo and Koval Lane in Las Vegas while riding with 2Pac on Sept. 7 following a Mike Tyson boxing fight at the MGM Grand. More from Billboard Bono Bids Emotional Farewell to USAID Staffers Fired By Trump: 'You Were the Best Of Us' 'KPop Demon Hunters' Ends Hit Soundtrack Drought Clipse Talks 'Let God Sort Em Out,' Kendrick Lamar Feature & What Brought Malice Back to Rap: 'A Grammy Run Is Always the Goal' 'I got out and tried to tell the officers what happened while I was bleeding everywhere,' Knight remembered of the chaotic scene. 'Also, I then was getting 2Pac out the car, even when the door was open. I had to go over there bleeding everywhere, take the seat belt off him. When we get into the ambulance, Pac is funny as f—k. He cracking jokes. I'm cracking jokes. Pac's like, 'S—t, when we heal up, you know what we doing.'' Pac underwent multiple emergency surgeries, including a lung removal, to combat his internal bleeding. Knight claimed that Pac, floating in and out of consciousness, wanted to be killed before ever going back to jail because of his role in the casino brawl that took place hours earlier. Suge Knight alleged that the rapper had pleaded with mom Afeni Shakur about ending his life, and Knight claims that Afeni gave him pills to assist in expediting that process. 'The doctors came in and brought him back. And his mom said, 'Don't ever do that again. If he's having complications, don't touch him,' Knight claimed of Afeni's message to doctors after seeing enough of her baby fighting for his life. 'Don't bring him back. Let him go.'' 2Pac passed away shortly after 4 p.m. PT on Sept. 13, 1996. The legendary rapper was quickly cremated, which his mother was a proponent of, but Knight stated that Pac had different plans for his funeral. '[2Pac] told me, 'When I go, I want every rapper at my funeral to grab the mic. I want them to kiss me head to toe. Just like in 'Life Goes On.' He didn't want to be cremated,' he claimed. Knight said he ended up paying an affiliate $1 million in cash for Pac's cremation. Afeni Shakur passed away at 69 years old on May 2, 2016. At the time, the Marin County Sheriff's Office reported that she had suffered possible cardiac arrest. Twenty-seven years after 2Pac's murder, Duane 'Keffe D' Davis was arrested in September 2023 and is facing a murder charge. He remains in jail awaiting trial, which is slated to begin in February 2026.
