One of the substitutes, Seán Boyd, got the better of two opponents to set up Mipo Odubeko who scored for the third game in a row.
But O'Brien - in his first European game as manager - said: 'I thought in the first half, it was a really good performance.
'We attacked the game really well and we created a lot of chances.
'In a European tie, it's four halves of
football
. Sometimes you don't get what you deserve but it was about resetting. I thought we had chances again and we were happy to get the winner.

'It was a tough team to pick because I know how important these games are for players but I said the bench would be important.

A delighted Odubeko added: 'The first half was really frustrating. I don't think I really touched the ball so to see the ball bobble into the bottom corner I'm really happy.
'I think we put on a good show. I love playing at Tolka Park, I love playing for Shels and most importantly scoring goals for Shels.'

Ex-Ireland striker takes charge of Shamrock Rovers following coach departure
Shamrock Rovers have announced the appointment of former Ireland striker Stephanie Zambra as their interim head coach. The 2014 FIFA Puskas Award runner-up and 58-time capped star was working as assistant coach to the women's team. But following the resignation of Collie O'Neill, Zambra has accepted the offer to step up to the top job on a temporary basis and will take charge of Tuesday night's Women's Premier Division clash against Waterford. Rovers confirmed the appointment in a statement, which read: 'Shamrock Rovers F.C. can confirm that current assistant coach, Stephanie Zambra, has been appointed interim Head Coach of our Women's First Team and will prepare the squad for Tuesday's game against Waterford at Tallaght Stadium.' O'Neill's departure had been announced on Thursday. He left along with assistant coach Ciaran Ryan. Zambra is a hugely experienced former player, who moved into the coaching team at the start of this season, following her decision to retire as a player. Olympian Rhys McClenaghan shares health update after surgery
Olympic gold medalist and Dancing with the Stars champion Rhys McClenaghan has shared a health update from the hospital after his shoulder surgery. Rhys gave the camera a thumbs up from his hospital bed as he shared the update on social media. The Olympic gymnast is recovering from having surgery on his shoulder which he remarked can be the 'reality of sport'. Rhys is in good spirits after the surgery. 'I've been struggling with this injury for a while now, so I'm delighted that everything went to plan with the operation and I can make my way back to maintaining my spot as the best in the world at what I do.
