Shereen, Irfan take centre stage at Asian meet
Malaysia Athletics (MA) technical director John Ballard said Shereen and Irfan are currently ranked among the top three in the women's 400m and men's discus events, respectively.
The 26-year-old Shereen clocked a season-best 53.66s at the Tom Jones Memorial in Florida last month and holds the national record of 51.79.
She is expected to battle for gold with Bahrain's Kemi Adekoya, the reigning Asian Games champion, and compatriot Salwa Eid Naser. Shereen bagged bronze in the Hangzhou Games in 2023.
Irfan, 29, threw a season-best 60.00m to claim silver at the Queensland Open in March.
He will face stiff competition from Qatar's Moaaz Mohamed Ibrahim and China's Abuduaini Tuergong in Gumi.
"Irfan is in good form and should be on the podium in Gumi," said Ballard.
Hangzhou Asian Games 100m bronze medallist Azeem Fahmi will skip the Asian meet.
Ballard confirmed Malaysia will field 36 athletes in Gumi.
"Sprinter Russell Alexander Nasir Taib will contest the men's 200m alongside youngster Sayyid Amin Roslan.
"Teenager Danish Iftikhar Roslee, who stunned the seniors to win the 100m title with a 10.57s at the Cahya Mata Super Series on Saturday, will feature in the 4x100m.
"Jonathan Nyepa and Khairul Hafiz Jantan will race in the men's 100m."
Zaidatul Husniah Zulkifli will double up in the women's 100m and 200m, joined by youngsters Nur Aishah Rofina Zulkifli (100m) and Izzatul Musfirah Ahmad Kamal Azira (200m).
At last year's Asian Championships in Bangkok, Malaysia managed just one bronze through Irfan.

Track queen Shereen's World Championships spot still uncertain
KUALA LUMPUR: Is track queen Shereen Samson Vallabouy set to represent Malaysia at the World Championships in Tokyo from Sept 13-23? Malaysia Athletics (MA) had earlier confirmed she would be granted a wild card by World Athletics. However, her mother and former national athlete, Josephine Mary, has claimed the matter is far from settled. "MA will decide one month before the world meet on the wild card, and it will depend on current form," said Josephine. She revealed Shereen has shifted her focus to the 100m event instead of the 400m since competing at the Asian Championships in South Korea in May. At that meet, Shereen, who won bronze in the 400m at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games with a time of 52.58s, was battling a fever and could only manage 54.80 in her heat, failing to make the final. Shereen holds the national record of 51.79 for the 400m. The qualifying mark for the World Championships is 50.72. Despite the setback, the Florida-based 27-year-old has bounced back in style. Trained by Derrick White, she clocked a season's best of 11.72 to win the 100m at the JAC Final Countdown meet in Florida, on July 26. Her personal best in the event is 11.61. "She was advised to tone down her endurance work and focus on speed to allow full recovery," said Josephine. "She's concentrating on the 100m first and will gradually return to the 400m. It was encouraging to see her win the 100m last week."

PETALING JAYA: Men's doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik have an opportunity to end their long wait for a World Tour Super 1000 title when they take on Indonesia's Fajar Alfian-Shohibul Fikri in the China Open final today. Yesterday, Aaron-Wooi Yik continued their great run in the tourney by beating India's 2022 Asian Games gold medallists Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty 21-13, 21-17 in the last four at the Olympic Sports Center Gymnasium in Changzhou. The world No. 2 pair played brilliantly from start to finish to come away with the win in 42 minutes. It was their 11th victory in 14 meetings over the Indian duo. Aaron-Wooi Yik are now just one step away from a maiden Super 1000 crown and will be keen to make amends after finishing runners-up to home favourites and Paris Olympics silver medallists Liang Weikeng-Wang Chang in the 2023 China Open.
