Big Ten squad to host two HBCUs this season
Alabama A&M begins new era
Alabama A&M opens Indiana's season on November 5. The Bulldogs are entering a new chapter under head coach Dontae Jackson, who takes over after a successful stint at Grambling State. Last season, A&M finished 10–22, but Jackson brings a reputation for building tough, defensive teams. He aims to inject a winning culture and boost recruiting through his SWAC connections and national network.
Bethune-Cookman closes out November
Bethune-Cookman faces Indiana on November 29. The Wildcats are coming off a 17–16 campaign under head coach Reggie Theus, a former NBA All-Star with deep coaching experience. Theus has steadily elevated the program's credibility and competitiveness. With several key players returning, BCU looks to continue its momentum and won't shy away from the Big Ten spotlight.
Why These Matchups Matter
For both HBCUs, these games offer more than just competition-they bring visibility, financial support, and a chance to measure up against top-tier talent. Facing Big Ten teams helps prepare HBCU programs for their conference slates while giving players national exposure.
These games also highlight a growing trend. Big Ten schools increasingly schedule HBCUs in non-conference play, often providing much-needed financial boosts for smaller programs through guarantee game payouts.
Embracing the Challenge
With proven coaches like Jackson and Theus leading the way, Alabama A&M and Bethune-Cookman are ready to represent the HBCU community with pride. Expect both teams to compete hard and make the most of their national stage this season.

Previewing the 2025 season for Texas A&M WR Terry Bussey with his player profile
As we gear up for the 2025 football season, Aggies Wire is breaking down every player on the Texas A&M roster. Throughout the preseason, each profile will highlight a player's background, their recruiting rankings upon graduating from high school, and their projected role under head coach Mike Elko. Terry Bussey entered the 2024 season surrounded by hype—hype that new head coach Mike Elko rightfully tried to temper at every opportunity when asked about the true freshman's role. Fans speculated wildly: some wanted him on offense, others on defense, and a few believed he could play both sides of the ball. Ultimately, he landed on offense and special teams. His freshman season was hard to evaluate for several reasons. He arrived later than most of his class, didn't have a set position until later in the year, and had to navigate a new coaching staff establishing a new culture. Despite a low usage rate, Bussey showed flashes of potential, though it was a modest start to his career. In total, he recorded 49 touches for 572 yards and two touchdowns. Preseason Player Profile Recruiting Rankings (Class of 2024) The former five-star prospect was one of the most sought-after recruits in the nation. When Jimbo Fisher was fired during the 2023 season, several programs made a push, but Bussey stayed firm in his commitment and chose to remain with Coach Elko. In high school, he was a three-time Class 2A MVP and earned Mr. Texas Football honors from Dave Campbell's Texas Football in 2022. Despite missing several games during his senior season, he led Timpson High School to its first-ever state championship. Depth Chart Outlook Bussey's situation is unique. Last year, he filled a positionless offensive role. Coach Elko has now confirmed that Bussey's official position will be wide receiver, although his versatility means he'll be moved around—similar to how Deebo Samuel is used. Even if he's not listed as a starter, expect him to see plenty of touches during the 2025 season. Looking back at the three-year anniversary of USC's move to the Big Ten
Three years ago on Tuesday, the world of college athletics was turned upside down. On July 1, 2022, USC and UCLA stunned everyone when they announced they would be leaving the Pac-12 Conference after a century in the league to join the Big Ten. It is not an exaggeration to say that the entire landscape of collegiate sports changed that day. The Trojans and Bruins leaving the Pac-12 set off a series of events that led to the conference collapsing—although the league is coming back as a glorified Group of Five conference—and a new 'Power Two' emerging in college football. Today, the Big Ten and SEC are head and shoulders above the rest of the sport, with everyone else fighting for those two conferences' scraps. Now, three years later, USC and UCLA have played a full season in the Big Ten, to mixed results. While the Trojans and Bruins had plenty of success in women's basketball, baseball, and Olympic sports, both schools struggled on the football field in their debut campaign in the conference. Oregon, however, which also joined the league this past season, had no such problem, running the table and winning the Big Ten in Year 1. July 1, 2022 will forever go down as a historic day in both USC and college sports history. Three years later, however, it feels like ancient history. In order to prove the decision was justified, the Trojans must start winning on the football field and showing that they truly belong in the conference.

LSU baseball transfer portal: Tigers add Big Ten reliever with strikeout stuff
LSU baseball's latest addition from the transfer portal comes from the Big Ten in former Oregon pitcher Santiago Garcia, according to reports on Tuesday. The lefty made 22 appearances out of the bullpen in 2025. Through 28 innings pitched, he posted a 4.18 ERA and 38 strikeouts to 18 walks. Opposing hitters bat .165 against him. Garcia made appearances in three of the Ducks' four postseason games, including an inning apiece in the Eugene Regional during the NCAA Tournament. He surrendered one run on two hits during those appearances. The southpaw allowed two or more runs just four times in 2025. In Oregon's first Big Ten season, Garcia consistently earned high-leverage appearances and pitched well under pressure. He'll join the Tigers' bullpen, which will experience a shakeup as LSU's two starters, Kade Anderson and Anthony Eyanson, head to the MLB. Garcia is the third pitcher brought in by head coach Jay Johnson following LSU's national championship win. He joins fellow lefties Danny Lachenmayer and Ryler Smart.
