Pogacar ‘respects' Vingegaard in Tour de France rivalry
Defending champion Tadej Pogacar insisted he had every respect for his great Tour de France rival Jonas Vingegaard ahead of Saturday's opening stage in Lille.
The 26-year-old Slovenian won the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and world title in 2024 and is hot favourite again here.
Speaking at the Lille Opera House on Thursday the Team UAE rider laughed off suggestions of bitterness, when asked about harsh words between the two in previous races.
'Look in the heat of the moment you can maybe scream something at someone,' said Pogacar, dressed in his world champion rainbow shirt.
Pogacar won the Tour in 2020 and again in 2021, when Vingegaard was second. The Dane won in 2022 and 2023, with the Slovenian runner up both times. Pogacar, who rides for Team UAE, recaptured the title last year with Vingegaard, of the powerful Visma squad, second.
'The last five years have been intense between me and Jonas,' Pogacar said. 'It's a great competition and rivalry and it will be interesting to see if the title changes hands again.' 'I'm looking forwards to taking on Jonas again.
It's going to be great for people on television and along the roadsides.'

Australia beat West Indies by 133 runs in 2nd Test, clinch series
AFP | St. George's Australia defeated the West Indies by 133 runs before tea on the fourth day of the second Test in Grenada on Sunday. Set the daunting target of 277 in a low-scoring match on a two-paced pitch which made free strokeplay almost impossible, the home side side were bundled out for 143 off 34.3 overs for the visitors to take an unbeatable 2-0 lead and extend their 20-year hold on the Frank Worrell Trophy. Australia now have the chance to complete a clean sweep of the three-match series when the final Test, a day/night fixture, gets underway next Saturday in Kingston, Jamaica. Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon led the rout with three wickets each, the leftarm fast bowler lifting his overall Test tally to 394 to fuel the tantalising prospect of reaching the 400-wicket mark in his 100th Test in the series finale. West Indies captain Roston Chase top scored with 34 while Shamar Joseph carved his way to 24 when the writing was already on the wall. Joseph had taken two of the final three Australian second innings wickets to fall at the start of the day to finish with four for 66 as the visitors were dismissed for 243. That haul included Alex Carey for 30 following his first innings effort of 63, important contributions lower down the order which earned him the man of the match award. 'The wickets have been challenging in this series so far but they have also been a lot of fun to play on because Test cricket can be grind,' said Carey after Australia wrapped up the match when Jayden Seales skied a catch back to Lyon. 'I think it's important to be able to adapt in-game. Credit also to the bowlers for the work they have put in for these two matches so far.' Once again it was the effectiveness of the Australian attack with the new ball which made all the difference. Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Beau Webster and skipper Pat Cummins claimed a wicket each before lunch to have the West Indies reeling at 33 for four. Chase and Shai Hope started the afternoon session positively but when Hope miscued an ambitious heave at Hazlewood to give the bowler a simple lobbed catch, the match was essentially over. 'We never really got those partnerships going with the new ball up front,' Chase observed.

Belgian Merlier wins crash-marred Tour de France stage
Belgian Tim Merlier pipped Italian Jonathan Milan right at the line to win stage three of the Tour de France at Dunkirk yesterday, as Mathieu van der Poel retained the race lead. Bahrain - Victorious team's German rider Phil Bauhaus finished third. The stage was marred by a series of falls, but the two favourites for the title Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard fin-ished safely in the main pack and remain in second and third place overall behind Van der Poel. The flat 179km run from Valenciennes along the Belgian border was marked above all by a nasty fall that caused Jas-per Philipsen to quit with severe grazing and a suspected fracture. The fall ripped the green best sprinter's jersey from Philipsen's back two days after he won the opening day sprint, as he slid along the road in the 70kph crash. There were three more falls, including two nasty looking ones in the finale with Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel, Merlier's teammate, involved. Merlier, 32, grew up just over the border from Dunkirk and had been hoping to win the opening stage on Sunday. 'That was a mess,' Merlier said of the falls. 'I lost a great deal of energy getting in position but it was a good bike throw. I knew I'd beat Milan.' Lidl-Trek's Milan led over most of the final 150m, but even without sealing the stage win his efforts were still rewarded as he inherited the green sprint points jersey from the stricken Philipsen. Van der Poel in the leader's yellow jersey is the grandson of French cycling legend Raymond Poulidor, who came second in the Tour de France seven times, but never won and also never got to don the yellow tunic. Another Belgian, the national champion Tim Wellens, gave cross-border fans even more to celebrate as he won the day's only climb, the 2.3km ascent of Mont Cassel at 31km from the finish line. The 34-year-old will now hold the king of the mountains polka dot jersey overnight. Frenchman Kevin Vauquelin is in the best under-25's rider's white jersey afer staying in the finishing mix in all three stages. Regional police said one million spectators had lined the roadsides on the opening day, and while rain dissuaded that kind of turnout for stage two, huge crowds turned out again for the run to Dunkirk. The eleven bikes stolen from outside the Cofidis team hotel early Sunday were all found before the stage's end -- five of them were recovered abandoned in a forest early yesterday with the others being tracked down by the police later in the day.
