Business Times7 days ago
[LOS ANGELES] The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Disney's hotly anticipated reboot of the Marvel Comics superhero franchise, conquered the North American weekend box office, earning US$118 million and sidelining Superman, industry estimates showed on Sunday.
Fantastic Four - starring actor-of-the-moment Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Emmy winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things) - tells the story of a team of heroes trying to save a retro-futuristic world from the evil Galactus.
'This is an outstanding opening,' said David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research. 'Fantastic Four was a modest and struggling superhero series; it just caught up with the biggest and the best.'
Superman, the latest big-budget action film featuring the iconic superhero from Warner Bros. and DC Studios, slipped to second place at US$24.9 million, Exhibitor Relations said.
That puts the global take of the film, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, over the US$500 million mark.
Jurassic World: Rebirth - the latest installment in the blockbuster dinosaur saga - finished in third place at US$13 million. Its worldwide total stands at US$672.5 million.

The Universal film, starring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali, takes viewers to an abandoned island research facility, where secrets - and genetically mutated dinosaurs - are lurking.
F1: The Movie, the Apple and Warner Bros flick starring Brad Pitt as a washed-up Formula One driver who gets one last shot at redemption, moved up to fourth place at US$6.2 million.
Smurfs, the latest film featuring the adorable blue creatures and starring Rihanna as Smurfette, slipped to fifth place in only its second week in theatres with US$5.4 million in North American ticket sales.
'The box office is on an excellent run that started two weeks ago,' Gross said.
'These are not the good old days, but Fantastic Four and Superman are performing extremely well. Superheroes are showing some swagger, and it's good news for the industry.'
Rounding out the top 10 were:
I Know What You Did Last Summer (US$5.1 million)
How to Train Your Dragon (US$2.8 million)
Eddington (US$1.7 million)
Saiyaara (US$1.3 million)

Actress-singer Lindsay Lohan comes full circle with Freakier Friday

LONDON – Lindsay Lohan says she drew upon her own experiences of motherhood for Freakier Friday, the highly-anticipated sequel to her hit 2003 movie Freaky Friday. Lohan, 39, welcomed her first child in 2023, a year before the Disney movie was filmed. 'It felt full circle for me, and also the timing was pretty impeccable considering that I'm a new mum, and I was able to bring being a mum into the character,' Lohan said at the film's London premiere on July 31. 'It's the first time I'm able to do that on screen.' Freaky Friday, with a reported budget of US$26 million (S$34 million), was a surprise hit, making over US$160 million worldwide and obtaining a cult following. The 2025 follow-up sees Lohan and actress Jamie Lee Curtis reprising the roles of mother and daughter duo Tess and Anna Coleman. Twenty years on, Anna is a single parent to tomboy teen daughter Harper, played by Julia Butters. Their relationship comes under stress when Anna falls for Eric (Manny Jacinto), the father of Harper's new British classmate Lily (Sophia Hammons), and they decide to get married. The future stepsisters, with a mutual dislike for one another, decide to intervene. Freakier Friday opens in Singapore on Aug 7. While the 2003 film saw a body swap between Tess and Anna, things get 'freakier' this time around with Tess and Anna switching bodies with Lily and Harper. Before signing on to the sequel, Lohan ensured that Anna returned as a multi-faceted and relatable character. 'It was important to me that we explained who Anna is today and how she's evolved and the dynamic between her and her daughter as she's a single working mum,' Lohan said. She added: 'There are some basic points that I wanted to get across because I want people to see the movie and find a piece of it that they can grab onto and be like, 'okay, I get that'.' Directed by Nisha Ganatra, the movie also sees actor Chad Michael Murray reprising the role of young Anna's love interest, Jake. Shooting the sequel was a 'lovefest', said Murray. 'It was the same, but better. It felt very much like connective tissue to the first movie. Everyone loved going to work and no one wanted to go home.' Freakier Friday marks Lohan's big screen return, since 2013's The Canyons. 'It's obviously nerve-wracking because you want it to be great, and you want people to love what you do,' she said. 'As long as people are enjoying what I'm doing, and it's making them happy, then I feel like I'm doing my job and that's what I'm here to do.'

The Fantastic Four: First Steps star Ralph Ineson on how his costume change felt like he was in a 'Formula One pit', Entertainment News

Ralph Ineson "felt like a Formula One car" during the making of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The 55-year-old star plays villain Galactus in the new Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) blockbuster and explained the lengths that the crew had to go to keep him cool in his heavy costume. Ralph told Collider: "For the actor, it's like working in a huge rubber suit in a sauna, but you're not allowed to sweat. "So, I have a whole pit crew around me — I'm like a Formula One car — with people taking off bits of my costume in between takes to bring my body temperature down, and then bring it back on for the next take. "People are shoving air conditioning units up the back of my armour to keep my body temperature down. So, it's a really strange sight. There are eight people buzzing around me like a Formula One pit crew." Ralph explained that the "strangest" part about starring in the film is seeing his character recreated in toy form for merchandise. The Harry Potter star said: "It's really crazy. The maddest one for this, for me, is the popcorn bucket of Galactus' head, which is about this big. It's enormous! That's kind of surreal. "I saw a picture of a toy that's being released, which is kind of to scale to the normal toys, so the Galactus one is about two and a half feet tall. So, yeah, it's very strange to see yourself in toy form." Ineson explained that there was some dialogue from Galactus that he was disappointed to see absent from the flick's final cut, but he respects director Matt Shakman's editorial decisions. He said: "From my point of view, there's no kind of sections, but there were various versions, dialogue-wise, of certain speeches, and there were a couple of phrases that I particularly liked that I would have liked to have stayed in that were replaced by other ones. "But that's not my job. I don't do those things. That's Matt and editors." The Fantastic Four: First Steps also stars Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/ Invisible Woman and she has confessed to becoming a "nerd" about her alter ego. She told Variety: "I'm such a Sue nerd. "There was something so allegorical about her. She was called Invisible Girl. Then Psycho-Man comes and disrupts everything, and she has a meeting with her own dark side in Malice. She comes back, and she renames herself Invisible Woman. So she transforms from a girl to a woman. "There's something about meeting the hardest parts of yourself in Malice that felt extremely poignant to me. I'm really hopeful I might be allowed to be Malice at some point for her." Vanessa previously described how she loves to take on "challenging" roles. The Crown actress told TheTalks: "I really like pushing past my limits in that way - I love it. "When I read something and go, 'Uh, I don't know how I am going to do this,' then I know I should do it. I don't think it feels as challenging when you read a script and go, 'I know exactly how I am going to do this.'" ALSO READ: Vanessa Kirby lost her voice after Fantastic Four birth scene
