Khairy excited to play alongside Man Utd legend

KUALA LUMPUR: Manchester United legends Ryan Giggs and Dimitar Berbatov, and ex-Chelsea captain John Terry will feature in the Zurich Liga 7x7 All Stars festival at KLFA Stadium on July 19.
The tournament will feature four teams: Team Wizards, Team Bangsa Bola, Team Harimau and Team Zurich.
Former sports minister Khairy Jamaluddin, who is also the manager of Team Wizards, relishes the opportunity to play alongside Giggs, the captain of their side.
"My team is well balanced. We've got Kogileswaran Raj, Indra Putra Mahayuddin, Tengku Fahad Mua'adzam Shah, Hairul Azreen, and of course, me," said Khairy, who is a Man Utd fan.
"But the X-factor in our team is Giggs. I mean, Terry has never been the same ever since he slipped during the penalty kick (in 2008 Champions League final against Man Utd), so he's going to slip all over again."
Khairy quipped Giggs had personally requested to join his team after the latter's recent trip to Malaysia to promote the Man Utd vs Asean All-Stars match last month.
"When Giggs was here recently, he asked me if he could be part of my team. I said okay, no problem. We were supposed to have Paul Scholes, but he couldn't come, so we managed to get Giggs instead," he said.
Khairy couldn't resist taking a jibe at Team Bangsa Bola who are captained by Terry and managed by banker Tan Sri Nazir Razak. "Well, it's Terry and then, you know, it's Nazir. I mean, a banker doesn't know much about football, right?" he said.
"Tan Sri Tony Fernandes' team (Harimau) will be competitive because he's a competitive person, having Safee Sali as the captain.
"There's also Team Zurich led by Junior Cho, featuring Berbatov."
Meanwhile Safee, whose Team Harimau feature Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, Khyril Muhymeen, K. Gurusamy, and Adam Sinclair, said playing with legends like Terry and Giggs is a proud moment for local football.
"To be part of something alongside Terry and Giggs is not ordinary, it's a benchmark for the next generation," he said.

Soccer-Grumpy Maresca still hopeful Chelsea can win Club World Cup he thinks needs fixing

Soccer Football - FIFA Club World Cup - Chelsea Training - New York City Football Club Academy, Orangeborough, New York, U.S. - July 7, 2025 Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca during training REUTERS/Lee Smith EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (Reuters) -Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca remains one of the Club World Cup's harshest critics, despite his team reaching the semi-finals, and continued a stream of complaints about everything from the weather to the scheduling ahead of Tuesday's clash with Fluminense. The Italian has repeatedly complained about the heat, the calendar and the toll on his players' fitness at the tournament, while also criticising FIFA for the weather delay that interrupted his team's round-of-16 clash against Benfica for nearly two hours. On Monday, ahead of the semi-final against Fluminense, the Chelsea boss refused to accept that his Premier League side were favourites, instead arguing that the tournament calendar unfairly benefited South American teams. Maresca said the South American sides had arrived with fresh legs in midseason while the Europeans were exhausted at the end of a long campaign. "It is not that we don't see this tournament as important, it's that teams have arrived in two completely different situations and realities. How many games have the Brazilian team played in their current season? We have played 63 games," Maresca told a press conference. Maresca said Chelsea took the competition seriously but structural improvements were needed. "I see the Club World Cup as a top competition and we are very happy to be here, we want to win it, but at the same time that are several things I think could be improved probably due to the fact that it is the first time they are organising it," he said. Maresca also said that "many other things have been done well" but did not specify what those positive things were. The manager praised Brazilian football quality ahead of facing his third Brazilian opponents, after Chelsea lost 3-1 to Flamengo in the group stage and beat Palmeiras 2-1 in the quarter-finals. "The quality from Brazilian players is probably the top, is the best quality," he said, while again highlighting the conditioning gap between fresh South American sides and exhausted Europeans. "There are two things that for me are very clear in the two games that we face (against) Brazilian teams. One is the quality but at the same time it is very clear the energy that they have, for different reasons, and we don't. Top quality and also defensively, they were very good. So it will be a tough game." Despite his litany of grievances with the tournament format and conditions, Maresca's Chelsea remain in contention for the title as they prepare to face the Brazilian underdogs who have defied all expectations to reach the semi-finals. Soccer-Fluminense embrace underdog role as they prepare to face Chelsea

Soccer Football - FIFA Club World Cup - Fluminense Training - Sports Illustrated Stadium, Harrison, New Jersey, U.S. - July 7, 2025 Fluminense's Thiago Silva and coach Renato Gaucho during training REUTERS/Kai Pfaffenbach EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (Reuters) -Fluminense are relishing their role as the Club World Cup's underdogs ahead of Tuesday's semi-final against Chelsea, with manager Renato Gaucho embracing an "us against the world" mentality that has carried the Brazilian side to an improbable run. The Rio de Janeiro club arrived in the United States given just a 0.05% chance of winning the title by Opta's supercomputer and were initially tipped to exit in the group stage. Instead, they defied predictions by finishing second in Group F, holding Borussia Dortmund and Mamelodi Sundowns to draws and beating Ulsan Hyundai to advance. The charismatic, 62-year-old Renato has transformed the club from relegation battlers to giant-killers in three months, helping them to knock out Champions League runners-up Inter Milan in the last 16 and Al-Hilal in the quarter-finals with his trademark extravagant guidance from the touchline. "When I say we're the ugly duckling, with all due respect to all the other clubs, I'm talking about our financial situation," Renato said. "Fluminense is only 10% of the financial size of these big clubs. So these big clubs have all the resources to sign the best players." Despite the financial disparity, Renato believes his side's attitude and concentration have been the key factors in their remarkable journey. "What got Fluminense to the semi-finals was exactly the attitude my team had on the pitch, their concentration, their focus and the hard work of the whole team," he said. The Brazilian showman is plotting carefully for Chelsea, describing the clash at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey as "a game of chess" that will be decided by tactical discipline. "It will be a game of patience. We will be careful," Renato said. "Of course, possession will be very important, especially at 3pm, which is the kickoff time. The heat is unbearable! If you have to keep running after your opponent, if you don't have possession, you wear yourself out. "We have the utmost respect for Chelsea but it's a game of chess. You can be sure that it will be a tight game, at least in my opinion, with few opportunities. And whoever takes advantage of all the data will certainly be the winner." Renato said Fluminense would look to neutralise Chelsea's key players while trying to keep the ball and play their own game as they continue their fairy-tale run. Fluminense aim to beat Chelsea to continue Club World Cup fairytale

BERLIN: Brazilian team Fluminense, which six months ago was fighting to avoid relegation to the second division and is now a surprise Club World Cup semifinalist, will face Chelsea as they aim to write a fairytale in the United States (US), reported German Press Agency (dpa). The club from Rio de Janeiro is the only non-European club to reach this stage of the revamped tournament. "God has blessed us and made it possible for us to overcome that moment," veteran captain Thiago Silva said ahead of the clash against Chelsea on Tuesday. The 40-year-old defender was a key player in helping Fluminense avoid relegation and now reaching the Club World Cup semifinals. A win against Chelsea would see them face either Real Madrid or Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain. Fluminense are something of an "ugly duckling" in this elite circle, coach Renato Portaluppi joked. But in sporting terms, the underdog team earned this prestigious game on the big football stage. "Many people didn't believe in us, and now we're in the semifinals. Fluminense are now one of the four best teams in the world," Portaluppi said. "I always tell the guys, 'Don't put off until tomorrow what you can achieve today.' Who knows when another chance like this will come along?" For Thiago Silva, it's also a reunion with his past. He played for Chelsea between 2020 and 2024, winning the Champions League and the old format of the Club World Cup in 2021 under coach Thomas Tuchel. Silva also played in Europe for AC Milan and PSG, among other teams. But last year, he returned to his hometown club, Fluminense. "He's a phenomenon. He has enormous experience and is an extension of the coach on the pitch," Portaluppi said.
