Sold: Largest Mars Rock Exceeds Auction Expectations
This massive chunk of Mars is a meteorite named NWA-16788, and at 24.67 kilograms (54.39 pounds), it towers over the previous record-holder, Taoudenni 002, a meteorite weighing 14.51 kg found in Mali back in 2021.
The Sotheby's auction opened on July 16 at 14:00 UTC, and closed just under five hours later, at 18:46 UTC. Prior to the event, the value of this scientific marvel was estimated to be between $2 million and $4 million, but ultimately it sold for $5.296 million.
The Martian rock's pristine condition and rich history likely led to it surpassing expectations.
NWA-16788 "shows minimal terrestrial weathering, indicating that its physical and chemical makeup have not been significantly altered since its arrival in the Sahara Desert," the Sotheby's listing explains.
"In other words, NWA-16788 is likely a relative newcomer here on Earth, having fallen from outer space rather recently."
The rock was likely sent careening into Earth when an asteroid forcefully crashed into its home planet, based on the presence of a few shock-melted areas, and the fact that around a fifth of its make-up is a glass called maskelynite, which forms when feldspar is transformed through intense heat and pressure.
The Sotheby's listing states the meteorite was "formed from the slow cooling of Martian magma and [is] characterized by a coarse-grained texture composed primarily of pyroxene, maskelynite, and olivine."
These micro-gabbroic qualities make it particularly rare: only 5.4 percent of Mars meteorites are classified as such.
It was discovered by a meteorite hunter in the Agadez region of Niger, in November 2023. A small sample was sent to the Shanghai Astronomy Museum, where its Martian identity was confirmed.

The auction raised mixed feelings from the scientific community, with some questioning whether we should really put a price-tag on such a rare specimen.
"It would be a shame if it disappeared into the vault of an oligarch," paleontologist Steve Brusatte from the University of Edinburgh told Jack Guy at CNN, before the auction took place. "It belongs in a museum, where it can be studied, and where it can be enjoyed by children and families and the public at large."
Meanwhile, University of Leicester planetary scientist Julia Cartwright gave CNN a different opinion: "The scientific interest will remain, and the new owner may be very interested in learning from it, so we may still gather lots of science from this."
But with the successful bidder's identity concealed, the fate of this very expensive rock is uncertain.

Younger, Smaller Children Show Less Success With ART
Younger children living with HIV with low BMI for their age were more likely than older children to fail first-line antiretroviral therapy (ART), based on new data from the ODYSSEY trial presented at the International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Science. Although the ODYSSEY trial showed superior efficacy of dolutegravir (DTG)-based treatment than standard of care, data on predictors of treatment failure in children starting ART on DTG-based regimens are limited, wrote James Wyncoll, PhD, medical statistician at University College London, London, England, and colleagues in their abstract. The researchers reviewed data on 381 children who started first-line ART: 189 with DTG and 192 with standard of care. Most of the children (82%) were in Africa, 13% were in Thailand, and 5% were in Europe. At baseline, the median age of the children was 10.5 years, and the median CD4 percentage was 20%. The median BMI-for-age z-score was -0.58, and 19% of the participants met the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria for stage III/IV disease. The researchers considered the predictive values of baseline characteristics across four domains (anthropometrics, HIV indicators, hematology, and demographics) for treatment failure after 96 weeks. Overall, 75 children experienced treatment failure by 96 weeks, including 24 in the DTG group and 51 in the standard-of-care group. Fewer children treated with DTG experienced treatment failure and the risk declined with increasing age, the researchers wrote. However, predictors of treatment failure were not significantly different between treatment groups, they said. In the domain-specific models, after adjustment for weight and trial arm, independent and significant predictors of treatment failure included low BMI-for-age, low CD4%, WHO stage III/IV events, high neutrophils, and care at a location in Africa. In a multivariate analysis, DTG treatment, lower weight, CD4%, ongoing WHO stage III/IV events, and African region remained as significant predictors of treatment failure ( P < .1). Neutrophils were no longer significant after adjustment for ongoing WHO stage III/IV events, and BMI-for-age was no longer a significant predictor after adjustment for CD4% and region. 'The findings of this study can help clinicians by identifying characteristics at ART initiation which predict a child's risk of treatment failure,' Wyncoll told Medscape Medical News . This study provides information on predictors of treatment failure in children starting ART for the first time, including those starting DTG regimens, he said. Outside of clinical trials, adolescents receiving ART reportedly fared worse than younger children, but the current study showed that the risk for treatment failure declined with increasing age, Wyncoll said. 'We think it's likely that in trials, where participants have increased support, adolescents have good responses to treatment, and it is the youngest children who are at highest risk of treatment failure,' he noted. Reasons for greater treatment failure in younger children may include the need for different formulations, as well as the reliance on caregivers to administer the drugs, which can be difficult, he added. Both CD4% and BMI-for-age are previously recognized predictors of treatment failure. Takeaways and Next Steps The study's findings support previous research showing young age as a strong risk factor for treatment failure with ART, Wyncoll told Medscape Medical News. 'Even with early diagnosis and ART, other studies like the EARTH cohort and the LIFE trial show high mortality in the first 2 years of life, especially within the first 6 months,' he said. 'The EARTH study found that an adverse maternal social environment was linked to poorer outcomes and higher treatment failure in young children, emphasizing the need for strong, sustained support for mothers during pregnancy and early life of infants, including emotional and adherence support,' he noted. Screening for and preventing opportunistic infections such as tuberculosis and giving nutritional support is essential to promote treatment success, and baseline CD4 percentage can help identify children at highest risk for treatment failure, he said. The final model in the current study provides the basis for an online risk prediction tool for treatment failure, Wyncoll explained. Clinicians would enter a child's characteristics (such as treatment type, age, CD4%, and BMI for age) at ART initiation. 'Children are currently left behind when we consider novel treatment regimens,' Wyncoll said. 'Our work highlights the need for innovative approaches and more research into improved treatment for vulnerable children, such as different ART delivery methods or enhanced therapeutics,' he added. Although the researchers concluded that predictors of treatment failure for children in the DTG and SOC groups were the same, the findings were limited by the low rates of treatment failure for the children on DTG, Wyncoll told Medscape Medical News . 'Further research is needed using real-world data from children starting dolutegravir to consolidate these findings,' he said. Don't Discount DTG for Children Relatively few studies have examined risk factors for virologic failure in children with HIV, especially those on DTG, said Monica Gandhi, MD, director of the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Bay Area Center for AIDS Research and professor of medicine at UCSF, in an interview. The current study findings showing a lower CD4 count when initiating ART or ongoing advanced HIV (as represented by the WHO stage III/IV events) or lower weight when starting ART were all risk factors for failure and were not unexpected, Gandhi told Medscape Medical News . 'What was surprising was to see DTG-based ART more associated with failure than standard-of-care (SoC) ART, since DTG is more potent and durable in adults,' she said. The clinical takeaway is to try to start ART in children as soon as possible to avoid low CD4 counts or more advanced HIV on ART, both of which are risk factors for failure, Gandhi said. DTG-based ART should still be the standard of care among children, but additional research is need to determine into what kind of formulations work best younger ages, such as a dispersible tablet for oral suspension, she added.

A rare Martian meteorite unearthed in Niger sold for a whopping $5.3 million at a Sotheby's auction in New York, prompting outrage from scientists and cultural heritage defenders who are now seeking answers and its return. A Martian meteorite weighing 24.6 kilograms and discovered in Niger was auctioned for $5.3 million at Sotheby's New York. The meteorite, known as NWA 16788, is the largest Martian rock ever found on Earth, estimated to have traveled 140 million miles. Concerns were raised about the legality and ethical implications of exporting this significant artifact from Niger. 'The NWA 16788 meteorite was shipped and transported in line with the standard procedure of all meteorites that come out of Niger. As with everything we sell, all relevant documentation was in order at each stage of its journey,' Sotheby's tells Forbes Africa. According to Giovanni Pratesi, a professor at the University of Florence in Italy and one of the authors of two of the three papers referenced in the Sotheby's catalogue, he was 'only involved in the characterization and study of this specimen (NWA 16788), without having received, for a while, any information about provenance.' 'In fact, the place of recovery of the meteorites is not so important for science because their real provenance, of course, is not the Earth but other bodies of the Solar System,' Pratesi says. 'Anyway, there is no doubt that the Sahara represents a very important reservoir of extraterrestrial material. 'A confirmation of this is given by the high number of meteorite specimens bearing the name NWA (North West Africa) that is used when the exact place of recovery is not known. In this respect, I believe that African countries should organize a network to recover and valorize these meteorites.' The sale has reignited concerns about the unregulated trade of meteorites, particularly those discovered in developing countries. Nigerien officials and international cultural watchdogs are now questioning the legality and ethics of the meteorite's export, with many demanding its immediate return. 'It was discovered in Niger? A tiny meteorite is rewriting what scientists thought they knew about the origins of our solar system. New evidence found in shavings from a meteorite known as Northwest Africa 12264 — a 50-gram (1.8 ounces) piece of space rock that is believed to have formed in the outer solar system — suggests that rocky planets like Earth and distant icy bodies may have formed at the same time. This challenges the long-standing belief that planets closer to the sun formed before those in the outer solar system, the ones that lie beyond the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Planets form within the rotating disks of gas and dust that surround young stars, where particles collide and stick together through a process known as accretion. As developing rocky planets heat up, they begin to differentiate, forming separate internal layers known as the core, mantle and crust. Scientists have thought that our solar system's inner rocky planets — Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars —formed first (around 4.566 billion years ago), while gas giants and icy bodies in the outer solar system came together slightly later (4.563 billion years ago), due to the colder temperatures at a greater distance from the sun. Rocky planets farther out were also thought to form more slowly because their higher water and ice content would have delayed internal heating and core development. Analyzing the composition of the meteorite (which was purchased from a dealer in Morocco in 2018) revealed a ratio of chromium and oxygen that indicates it came from the outer part of the solar system. Using precise isotopic dating methods, the researchers found that the rock formed 4.564 billion years ago — just two to three million years after the solar system's earliest solid materials. Until now, such early formation was thought to be limited to bodies from the inner solar system, according to a statement announcing the new study.
