Tesla ordered by Florida jury to pay $243 million in fatal Autopilot crash

Time of Indiaa day ago
A Florida jury on Friday found Tesla liable to pay $243 million to victims of a 2019 fatal crash of an Autopilot-equipped Model S, a verdict that could encourage more legal action against Elon Musk's electric vehicle company.
The verdict is a rare win for victims of accidents involving Autopilot. Musk has been pushing to rapidly expand Tesla's recently launched robotaxi business based on an advanced version of its driver assistance software.
Tesla shares fell 1.8 per cent on Friday, and are down 25 per cent this year.
Jurors in Miami federal court awarded the estate of Naibel Benavides Leon, as well as her former boyfriend Dillon Angulo, $129 million in compensatory damages plus $200 million in punitive damages, according to a verdict sheet.
Tesla was held liable for 33 per cent of the compensatory damages, or $42.6 million.
Jurors found the driver George McGee liable for 67 per cent, but he was not a defendant and will not have to pay his share.
"Tesla designed Autopilot only for controlled-access highways yet deliberately chose not to restrict drivers from using it elsewhere, alongside Elon Musk telling the world Autopilot drove better than humans," Brett Schreiber, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said in a statement.
"Today's verdict represents justice for Naibel's tragic death and Dillon's lifelong injuries," he added.
Tesla said it will appeal.
"Today's verdict is wrong and only works to set back automotive safety and jeopardize Tesla's and the entire industry's efforts to develop and implement life-saving technology," the company said.
The plaintiffs had sought $345 million of damages. Their lawyers said the trial was the first involving the wrongful death of a third party resulting from Autopilot.
Impact on future cases
Tesla has faced many similar lawsuits over its vehicles' self-driving capabilities, but they have been resolved or dismissed without getting to trial.
In June, a judge rejected Tesla's bid to dismiss the Florida case. Experts said Friday's verdict may spur more lawsuits, and could make future settlements more costly.
"It's a big deal," said Alex Lemann, a law professor at Marquette University. "This is the first time that Tesla has been hit with a judgment in one of the many, many fatalities that have happened as a result of its Autopilot technology."
The verdict could also impede efforts by Musk, the world's richest person, to convince investors that Tesla can become a leader in so-called autonomous driving for private vehicles as well as robotaxis it plans to start producing next year.
As Tesla's electric vehicle sales fall, much of its nearly $1 trillion market value hinges on Musk's ability to pivot the company into robotics and artificial intelligence.
Driver's role
The trial concerned an April 25, 2019 incident where George McGee drove his 2019 Model S at about 62 mph (100 kph) through an intersection into the victims' parked Chevrolet Tahoe as they were standing beside it on a shoulder.
McGee had reached down to pick up a cellphone he dropped on his car's floorboard and allegedly received no alerts as he ran a stop sign and stop light before hitting the victims' SUV.
Benavides Leon was allegedly thrown 75 feet (23 meters) to her death, while Angulo suffered serious injuries.
"We have a driver who was acting less than perfectly, and yet the jury still found Tesla contributed to the crash," said Philip Koopman, a Carnegie Mellon University engineering professor and expert in autonomous technology.
"The only way the jury could have possibly ruled against Tesla was by finding a defect with the Autopilot software," he added. "That's a big deal."
Tesla, in its statement, said McGee was entirely at fault.
"To be clear, no car in 2019, and none today, would have prevented this crash," the company said. "This was never about Autopilot; it was a fiction concocted by plaintiffs' lawyers blaming the car when the driver - from day one - admitted and accepted responsibility."

TikTok launches crowd-sourced context tool; Reddit's AI-driven share price jump; CapitalG and Nvidia in reported talks to fund Vast Data

TikTok launches crowd-sourced context tool TikTok announced the launch of a crowd-sourced tool called Footnotes that is aimed at letting users add context to potentially inaccurate or misleading posts, following a similar model to the Community Notes feature on X (formerly Twitter). TikTok began testing Footnotes in April, and allows vetted users to contribute context that is then rated by others for being helpful. Meta also follows a similar standard, having done away with its fact-checking programme in what was seen as a strategic move to align the company with U.S. President Donald Trump's conservative values. TikTok has around 170 million users in the U.S. and nearly 80,000 users in the country who have maintained an account for at least half a year have qualified as Footnotes contributors. However, the Chinese-owned short video app said that it will continue to maintain existing fact-checking programmes such as labelling content that is hard to verify, and partnering with fact-checking bodies. The existence of a Community Notes model of content moderation alone is not enough to prevent disinformation on sites such as X and Meta, according to professional fact-checkers working across time zones and languages. Reddit's AI-driven share price jump Reddit last week saw its shares rising by 15% after reporting quarterly results that went far beyond Wall Street expectations, bringing more attention to its Generative AI-powered offerings. Reddit is the latest tech company to capitalise on the market's interest in AI products, as it focuses on AI-based advertising tools. Apart from this, Reddit boasts a huge and well-organised trove of knowledge that users have contributed to the platform in the form of subject-based forums, media, questions and answers, interviews, and more. Per data from LSEG, Reddit expects its third-quarter revenue to be between $535 million and $545 million, while analysts have estimated an average of $473 million. Marketers are interested in Reddit, as it offers them the opportunity to make use of various ad campaigns and even insert brand ads right into user conversations. CapitalG and Nvidia in reported talks to fund Vast Data CapitalG, the growth fund under Alphabet, and Nvidia are reportedly carrying out talks in order to invest in AI infrastructure provider Vast Data. The new funding round could value the company at as much as $30 billion, per the sources. The funding round could close in the coming weeks, according to them. Vast Data has its headquarters in New York and develops storage technology that caters to the upkeep of large AI data centres. Vast Data may also consider an initial public offering in the future. Some of its clients include Elon Musk's xAI and CoreWeave. However, news of a potential investment has not yet been officially confirmed by Vast Data and CapitalG. An explosion in Generative AI startups, products, and models has also triggered demand for facilities that will allow tech companies to scale their data centres without facing hurdles.

Tesla launches first charging facility at Bandra-Kurla Complex in Mumbai

Global EV giant Tesla on Monday launched its first charging facility in the country weeks after entering the Indian market with an Experience Centre in the financial capital. The Tesla charging station set up at One BKC in the Bandra-Kurla Complex, features four V4 supercharging stalls (DC charging) and four destination charging stalls (AC charging), the company said. The company said it plans to set up three more such facilities, one each at Lower Parel, Thane and Navi Mumbai by the September quarter. Tesla made its much-awaited entry into India, on July 15 with the launch of its Model Y with price starting at ₹59.89 lakh while opening its first experience centre here. Tesla, led by American tech billionaire Elon Musk who had in the past cited India's high import tariffs for the company not entering the country earlier, will be importing the Model Y as a completely built unit (CBU), from its Shanghai manufacturing facility in China. The mid-sized electric SUV Model Y, which was once the world's best-selling car, will be offered in India in two variants: rear-wheel drive with base price at ₹59.89 lakh and long-range rear wheel drive at a base price of ₹67.89 lakh. The deliveries are slated to start in the third and fourth quarter of 2025, respectively, for the two variants. The Tesla Supercharging Stalls offer a peak charging speed of 250 kW starting at ₹24/kW and destination chargers providing 11kW at ₹14/kW, the company said.
