Justin Tucker hopes to thread needle between claiming innocence, accepting responsibility
When the NFL announced on Thursday that former Ravens kicker Justin Tucker has received a 10-game suspension under the Personal Conduct Policy, the initial reaction based on the bare-bones statement was that the league completed its investigation and its in-house legal process with a finding that Tucker had done what he was accused of doing during one or more massage-therapy sessions.
It quickly became clear that the suspension didn't result from the procedures created by the NFL. It came from a negotiation between the league, the union, and Tucker.
And that's what made aspects of the statement issued by Tucker's representative confusing. Especially at the outset.
'We are disappointed with the NFL's decision,' Rob Roche began in the comment that was widely distributed to reporters and for the most part disseminated with little if any context or explanation.
The NFL's 'decision' wasn't to suspend Tucker 10 games. It was to propose (presumably) a longer suspension if the process played out and to offer Tucker a 10-game suspension. It was Tucker's 'decision' to accept the 10-game suspension.
That fact, obscured by Roche's statement, is an important one. Tucker accepted a 10-game suspension for something he loudly insisted he didn't do.
'Justin has always strived to carry himself in a way that would make his family and community proud,' Roche added. 'He stands by his previous statements.'
But does he? Who accepts a punishment for something they know they didn't do — especially when reasonable minds will be inclined to include that accepting a 10-game suspension represents an admission of responsibility?
'In order to put this difficult episode behind him and get back on the field as soon as possible, we have advised Justin to accept this resolution and close this matter,' Roche said. 'The people who know Justin best know his character and understand that while he remains fully committed to excellence as a football player, he is deeply dedicated to his most important lifetime roles as a father, husband, and friend.'
It's one thing to advise Tucker to take a one-game or a two-game suspension. Ten games sends a much different message. Ten games suggests that Roche and others feared the league would emerge from the hearing before retired judge Sue L. Robinson with a much longer suspension.
And so, on one hand, Tucker still says he didn't do anything. On the other hand, he has accepted a TEN-GAME SUSPENSION for something he swears he didn't do. That's a difficult needle to thread, especially if he plans to eventually sue the Baltimore Banner for defamation based on the reporting that sparked this situation in late January.
For a defamation case to fly, Tucker will have to prove that the information was false (and that the Banner knew it was false or acted with reckless disregard to the truth or falsity of the information, since Tucker is a public figure). The suspension means, as a practical matter, that Tucker will also need to show that even the NFL was duped by the false allegations.

The importance of a good connection between a quarterback and a receiver cannot be understated. But having to get build that kind of connection with four guys cannot be an easy task. He finished with 1,229 yards, which placed him sixth in the league, as well as four touchdowns. Jeudy will be looking to follow up his Pro Bowl season with another good year in 2025, no matter who it is throwing him the ball. The Cleveland Browns are not the only team in the NFL with some considerable quarterback questions heading into next season. However, theirs has pretty clearly become the most convoluted. Advertisement Cleveland added four new quarterbacks through the offseason after learning Deshaun Watson had considerable setbacks in his recovery from an Achilles injury. Now, it's veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Picket along with rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders making up the quarterback totem pole. Many are wondering how this competition will work out through training camp and the remainder of the offseason. Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio has come out strong against the idea of the Browns keeping all four, suspecting the team has attempted to build leverage here. 'I think that's lucdacris. Having four quarterbacks on your roster?' Florio said. 'I think they're trying to build some trade leverage." Florio believes that one of Flacco or Pickett must be gone before the start of the season in order to help Sanders and Gabriel progress in their development. Advertisement 'Between Flacco and Pickett, one of them has to go. They have to go,' Florio said. 'Because I don't want the presence of both of them to undermine my effort to see what I have in Gabriel and Sanders. They don't have enough reps to go around to get everyone ready.' It's hard to imagine one of these four not being squeezed out by the time the final 53-man roster decisions are made. But if the goal is to build leverage off the veteran assets, how exactly would the Browns trade one of them? Flacco is an aged quarterback with little demand elsewhere and the market for Pickett will not turn any heads either. Simultaneously, nothing says the Browns should be married to the pair of rookies either. Losing Gabriel or Sanders would be a noticeable swing and miss but both were late Day 2 and Day 3 picks. Certainly not ideal, but the Browns could do worse in using these assets. Advertisement And if the hopes to be competitive next season do not work out in their favor, there's a a better class of quarterback prospects waiting in next year's draft. The Browns have some freedom to explore what they have this season and by no means should be forced to spoon feed opportunities to the rookies if they are not deserving. There's no need to force a move just for the sake of doing so. So, on Tuesday, having no appreciation for irony, he went on the Pat McAfee show and complained about being in the public eye and all the unwanted attention he gets. The only reason for him to be doing a stint on a talk show, especially McAfee's show, in June is because he craves attention. His big news this week was that this was probably his last season as a player. For a guy who was mistreated by Brett Favre when they were teammates, Rodgers is utilizing his 'How to Turn Retirement Uncertainty into Extra Attention' playbook to perfection. This is the same guy who wanted to host Jeopardy while still playing football. The same guy who milked the spotlight when Robert F. Kennedy leaked Rodgers as a possible vice presidential candidate. Advertisement And the same guy who gave his blessing to NETFLIX to make 'Enigma' a three-part documentary about his life. The only surprising thing is that the Steelers are putting up with this. Signing Rodgers is about the most uncharacteristic move they've made. This is a franchise that had the forethought to get out of the Antonio Brown business and then watched from a safe distance as he poisoned the Raiders, Patriots and Buccaneers. Rodgers is an aging, polarizing distraction who hasn't been good for a while and doesn't seem that committed to playing football anymore.
