Iloski scores club-record 4 goals, San Diego beats Vancouver, moves past 'Caps atop conference

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Milan Iloski scored a club-record four goals, Anders Dreyer had three assists and San Diego FC beat Vancouver 5-2 on Wednesday night to move past the Whitecaps into first in the Western Conference.
Iloski is the third player this season (Vancouver's Brian White and Nashville's Sam Surridge) and the 20th in MLS history to score at least four goals in a game.
San Diego (11-5-3) has won seven of nine with just one loss in that span and has 36 points, four behind Philadelphia — the points leaders in all of MLS — and one ahead of Vancouver.
Vancouver (10-3-5) has lost back-to-back games following an 11-game unbeaten streak.
Tomás Ángel scored for San Diego in the 90th minute.
Iloski's shot from the edge of the box was parried by goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka but Iloski calmly tapped in the one-touch putback from the left side of the area that slipped inside the near post in the 35th minute and then scored on the counter-attack in the 37th to make it 2-0.
Édier Ocampo scored his first career goal in MLS in the 43rd, a first-touch shot off a misplayed ball by San Diego defender Oscar Verhoeven.
Dreyer played an arcing ball-in from the right side to the center of the area, where Iloski scored on a diving header in the 44th minute for the first hat trick in club history and then ran onto a ball played ahead by Dreyer and beat Takaoka one on one to make it 4-1 in the 47th.
Mathias Laborda cut Vancouver's deficit to 4-2 in the 66th minute and Antoine Coupland, who made his MLS debut when he subbed on in the 87th minute, capped the scoring in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

Claude Giroux re-signs with Senators on 1-year, $2 million deal
The Ottawa Senators have signed pending free agent Claude Giroux to a one-year contract extension with a $2 million cap hit, as league sources have told The Athletic. The contract will carry $2.75 million in performance bonuses. The 37-year-old forward scored 15 goals and 50 points in 81 games played this past season. Giroux added one goal and five points in six postseason games with the Senators. Giroux also finished the season as the team's best faceoff man with a 61.5 percent win rate. When Sens players held their exit interviews with the media last month, they spoke glowingly of the veteran forward and what he meant to their locker room dynamic. Senators senior vice-president of hockey operations Dave Poulin told season-ticket holders that negotiations between Giroux and the team were 'ongoing' at an event earlier this month. Even on Saturday, moments after the Senators finished their drafting in this year's decentralized draft, Staios told the media he was 'hoping to hear back' from Giroux's camp on a deal. It got done. Giroux himself felt he had 'a lot in the tank' and believes he could still be an impact player at his age. To his point, it's not impossible to see players continue to be effective in their late 30s, though his statistics have trended downward since his first season three years ago. If the Sens don't acquire a top-line forward this summer, there is a world where Giroux starts the season on Tim Stützle's right wing again. But as he ages and his impact decreases, he may be better suited on a lower line. But as Staios and head coach Travis Green will tell you, the players dictate their place in the lineup. Giroux's place in the lineup on a team that's expected to take the next step internally will be a storyline to watch. The Athletic's Chris Johnston reported a breakdown on Sunday. Giroux must play at least 50 percent of playoff games to earn each playoff-based performance bonus. The Senators weren't expected to be a big-name player for free agents this summer thanks to their limited cap space before signing Giroux, among other pending free agents. With the Senators trying to find cap relief wherever possible, you can likely expect them to vie for depth options on the free-agent market or through trades. The team had limited cap space at the trade deadline, and it found a way to acquire Dylan Cozens in exchange for Josh Norris — two players with similar salaries. That was before adding then-pending RFA Fabian Zetterlund, too. Advertisement Between those examples and last summer's move to acquire Linus Ullmark, Staios is willing to make trades if the right offer presents itself. And he hasn't wasted time this year, acquiring Jordan Spence from the Los Angeles Kings for two draft picks, shoring up their defensive depth. There's every reason to believe Staios could be open to more opportunities this summer as his free-agent spending looks limited. PSG rout Messi's Inter Miami to reach Club World Cup quarters
Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi could not prevent his side falling to a heavy defeat by Paris Saint-Germain (FRANCK FIFE) Paris Saint-Germain steamrollered Lionel Messi's Inter Miami 4-0 to reach the Club World Cup quarter-finals on Sunday. Miami hoped the Argentine superstar's magic could help them produce an unlikely result against his former side, but the Major League Soccer side were dismantled in Atlanta by Luis Enrique's rampant European champions. Advertisement Ageing great Messi and his former Barcelona team-mates Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba had done well to reach the last 16 but the gulf in quality between the teams was laid bare over the 90 minutes. Joao Neves netted twice for PSG, who benefitted from a Tomas Aviles own goal, while Achraf Hakimi was also on target. After Neves opened the scoring early on Miami resisted until PSG hit three goals in 10 minutes towards the end of the first half. Canada's Tyler Mislawchuk earns silver at World Triathlon Cup
SAIDIA — Canada's Tyler Mislawchuk earned the silver medal at the World Triathlon Cup in Saidia, Morocco, on Sunday. The 30-year-old Mislawchuck finished in one hour 45 minutes 58 seconds in the Olympic distance test for his first World Cup podium in three years. It was the seventh World Cup podium of the Oak Bluff, Man., resident's storied career. A three-time Olympian, Mislawchuck came out of the unique 1.5-kilometre swim in sixth spot – just eight seconds back of the frontrunner. After a best-ever ninth place finish at the 2024 Olympics where he was battling for the podium until the final two kilometres. Mislawchuck opened this season with a sixth-place finish at the World Triathlon Championship Series in Yokohama, Japan. On Sunday, Mislawchuck appeared composed and comfortable while settling in for the eight-lap pedal with 24 riders through Morocco's northeastern coastal town known as the Blue Pearl. Advertisement Thriving in the heat, the lone Canadian in the field followed his game plan, steadily working his way through the pack in the first of five laps on the 10-kilometre run. One of seven athletes out front at the end of the second lap, Mislawchuk made his move and pulled away from the field with Reed and Conway, who was making his first World Cup start, going with him. The trio matched strides over the next lap with the veteran Mislawchuk and rookie Conway controlling the pace. As the intensity and pace picked up in the final loop, Reed dropped back, leaving a head-to-head battle between the Canadian and the Brit until the last 100-metres where the 20-year-old Conway snuck ahead in the last corner and into the finishing stretch.
