The Karachi building collapse
Needless to say, building collapses are common in the country's largest city where construction standards are either poorly enforced or not enforced at all. Cost-cutting is achieved by using substandard materials and ignoring safety regulations. The concerned regulatory department's performance is characterized by corruption, incompetence, inefficiency and lack of empathy.
According to the Sindh government, there are 51 buildings in Karachi that are 'extremely fragile and should be demolished'. My questions are: why aren't they doing it already? Why are they delaying?

27 YouTube channels banned
An Islamabad judicial magistrate has ordered the blocking of 27 YouTube channels for allegedly airing anti-state content and spreading 'false, misleading and fake' information. The decision of a lower court, in my view, will be challenged in higher court mainly because of the fact that reaching the conclusion that all those YouTube channels who have been banned were indeed involved in disseminating and propagating fake and misleading information requires a specialised expertise which signifies that the forum that has placed the ban has a deep understanding and proficiency within a special domain of cybercrime, often acquired through focused training, experience, or study. Hence the need for superior judiciary for delegating the responsibility of adjudication through setting up special courts on the pattern of banking courts, etc. After all, Pakistan is a vibrant democracy unlike India about which social media platform X said yesterday it was 'deeply concerned' after the Indian government ordered it last week to block 2,355 accounts, including two Reuters news agency accounts. Needless to say, India, the world's biggest democracy, regularly ranks among the top five countries for the number of requests made by a government to remove social media content. Governor visits site of Lyari building collapse
KARACHI: Governor of Sindh, Kamran Tessori, visited the site of the tragic building collapse in Baghdadi, Lyari, describing the incident as one that defies adequate condemnation. 'While the world continues to move forward, this calamity struck, leaving no one the chance to recover,' he remarked. Tessori praised the Sindh government's swift actions, including the removal of the director general, but stressed that simply changing personnel will not resolve systemic issues. He called for an investigation into the factors leading to the collapse, specifically regarding the building's construction timeline and approval process. The governor emphasized his commitment to ensuring justice for the victims without politicizing the matter. He highlighted the presence of many substandard buildings on 80-square-yard plots around the city, all of which will undergo reassessment. Additionally, he announced the launch of a helpline, '1133,' at the Governor House, assuring that residents of buildings deemed dangerous will receive alternative plots of the same size. Tessori noted with regret that most of the deceased were from the Hindu community and instructed the Sindh Building Control Authority's DG to conduct an immediate survey of all dilapidated structures in the city. 'This city does not belong to orphans; Lyari belongs to everyone,' he affirmed. He also pledged to create job opportunities for those affected, stating, 'I've spoken to the builder; we will reach out to more builders for those who register. The doors of the Governor House are open to all.' In a related development, residents near the collapsed Junaid Arcade protested, alleging they have been prohibited from returning to their homes for four days, despite being told by the administration to evacuate for only one hour. Many affected families are currently staying with relatives. Governor Tessori remarked that the gap between one building's collapse and the subsequent construction reflects a failure of the system. He concluded, 'I have always advocated for system reform, and my voice will grow louder.'

FBR fails to defend case before FTO
ISLAMABAD: Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Policy and Operation wings have failed to defend a case before Dr Asif Jah, Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO), wherein FBR has burdened taxpayers with heavy cost for forcefully implementing online integrated businesses and configure retail outlets with FBR's e-computerized system and alleged violations of privacy of taxpayers' data. It is reliably learnt that FTO has ordered an investigation against the FBR for forcefully implementation of SRO 428 to online integrate businesses on the basis of a complaint moved by advocate Waheed Shahbaz Butt. As per official record data on FTO website at case been fixed for hearing. The FTO's investigation is expected to provide relief to taxpayers who have been struggling to comply with the FBR's demands. The outcome of the investigation will also have significant implications for the FBR's policies and procedures. Waheed stated how can a private company pick, hold and use taxpayer's fiscal data under the umbrella of online integration of businesses and configure retail outlets with FBR's e-computerized system when the Supreme Court in their separate notes in PLD 2021 SC1 ordered initiation of Disciplinary proceedings under E&D Rules and criminal proceedings under section 198 against tax officials who contravened section 216 (privacy of taxpayer data). Complainant further added 'to avoid heavy cost of litigation and wastage of precious time/resources, kindly issue recommendations to the FBR to provide complete documentation, SOP(s), Flow Chart of Fiscal/tax information provided to private company selected by FBR, breach of personal privacy under the law (Section 216), exorbitant charges, similar practices in neighbouring and other countries in the World, lawful mandate to nominate one private company across Pakistan for POS activities, and other ancillary documents/data to prove that there is no favouritism and nepotism on the part of FBR tax employees, before proceedings further in the instant case.'
