Russell Martin dismisses 'dropping' key Rangers duo
Eyebrows were raised when James Tavernier and Nicolas Raskin were left out of Martin's starting line-up for the Champions League third-round qualifier against Viktoria Plzen. The game ended 3-0 to the hosts, securing a strong position in the play-off round. Martin is keen to avoid the term 'dropped' and has indicated that he will use a different line-up for Saturday's match against Dundee in the Scottish Premiership. He told BBC Scotland: "I'm really happy with a lot of it. "A bit annoyed with the last 15 minutes since I felt we had the ball too much in our own half, but that's my job to be demanding of the guys. "I think from Saturday to today, they took everything on, amazing energy at the start of the game, and real moments of quality actually." Martin expressed his pride in the team for their performance, especially after a challenging game on Saturday. He said: "It's really difficult to learn a lot of detail and apply it with the right intensity and courage all the time, especially after a tough afternoon on Saturday, so I'm really proud of the team." The Rangers manager also explained his approach to squad rotation, saying: "I don't like the word 'dropped'. "I said that to the guys, you don't get dropped from the team, we're going to need everyone. "People are going to come in, people are going to come out, so we need that freshness." Martin acknowledged the difficulty in making these decisions, particularly regarding key players. He added: "It's not easy to drop anyone, especially players that have been really important to this team over the last however long, but the decisions are all difficult, one is not tougher than the other. "You have to do what you think is best for the team to win on the night and, to be fair, they've come on and played brilliantly." Oliver Antman and Djeidi Gassama were standout performers, with Gassama scoring his third and fourth goals of the Champions League qualifiers. Antman, who made his debut after signing the day before, won a penalty that was converted by Cyriel Dessers and provided a cross for Gassama's second goal. Martin praised Antman's performance, saying: "I think you can see why we wanted to sign him. "He's game, he's willing, he's really competitive and he has moments of real quality. "So I'm really pleased for him because he's a really good kid, and I think he'll be a really good player for us." He also commended Gassama's development and eagerness to score, saying: "Gassama is really stepping up in terms of intensity, he really wants to score. "He's taken on the information really, really well."

Martin's changes pay off as Gassama double eases Rangers past Viktoria Plzen
Russell Martin's bold team selection paid off as Rangers battered Viktoria Plzen 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League third qualifying round tie at Ibrox. Martin hit out at some of his squad following their deflating 1-1 draw at Motherwell on Saturday, questioning mentality, egos and application, and the captain James Tavernier and the midfielder Nicolas Raskin were the biggest names among the expected changes. Martin got the required reaction as the winger Djeidi Gassama scored after 15 minutes before the returning striker Cyriel Dessers added a second from the spot just before the interval. Gassama, signed this summer from Sheffield Wednesday, scored a third in the 51st minute to put the Govan side into a commanding lead and eventually a comfortable win. Rangers will be heavy favourites to progress to a playoff tie against Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg or Club Brugge of Belgium. After pointing the finger at his under performers at the weekend, all eyes were on Martin's team selection and he made significant changes. Along with Tavernier and Raskin – arguably their best player last season – Danilo and Kieran Dowell were left out. New signing Oliver Antman, the Finland winger who joined from Go Ahead Eagles on Monday, made his debut with left-back Jefté, midfielder Lyall Cameron and Dessers returning while John Souttar was named captain. The Ibrox crowd was more subdued than usual on a big European night, initially. In the seventh minute Plzen's lofty striker Rafiu Durosinmi headed a cross from Amar Memic past the post but it was Gassama who struck first, playing a one-two with Dessers at the edge of the visitors' box before confidently curling the ball past the goalkeeper Florian Wiegele. After the Rangers defender Nasser Djiga brilliantly blocked a goal-bound shot from the visiting captain Matej Vydra, Antman's drive from a Gassama cut-back at the other end was cleared off the line by Vaclav Jemelka. Bizarrely Raskin, warming up on the sidelines, was booked by the French referee Clément Turpin for apparently trying to interfere at a Plzen throw-in as the Czech side began to exert some pressure. However, when a driving run into the box by Antman ended with him being barged over by Vydra, Turpin pointed to the spot for a soft penalty and Dessers sent Wiegele the wrong way. Rangers started the second half strongly and within three minutes the midfielder Mohamed Diomande struck the bar with an effort from the edge of the box. However, the third soon arrived as Gassama grabbed his second when he bulleted in a header from a pinpoint Antman cross from the right to score his fourth goal in the last three European matches. Raskin, Danilo, and Tavernier all came off the bench when the job was done before the home keeper Jack Butland made a good save from a powerful drive from Memic.

RB Leipzig and Liverpool begin transfer talks over 'fearless' £50m English star
RB Leipzig have entered transfer talks with Liverpool over a deal to sign their 'fearless' £50m English star Harvey Elliott, according to reports. The German club are interested in recruiting Elliott as a replacement for Xavi Simons, who is expected to join Chelsea in the summer window. Liverpool want £50m to sell the 22-year-old, although they'd be open to offers of £40m if a buy-back clause was inserted into the deal. The Athletic report that RB Leipzig have made contact with Liverpool and discussions – which are currently ongoing – are at an early stage. Elliott only started two Premier League matches for Liverpool in the 2024-25 campaign in what was Arne Slot's debut season as head coach. But former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was a huge fan of Elliott, previously labelling him as 'fearless' and a 'great footballer'. Elliott, who can play as an attacking midfielder, central midfielder or right winger, has registered 15 goals and 20 assists in 147 games for the Reds. He moved to Anfield from Fulham six years ago, with Liverpool paying the west London club an initial £1.5m plus £2.8m in contingent amounts. Elliott has also attracted interest from Premier League club West Ham ahead of the new season. Speaking in July, Elliott admitted that he was open to leaving Liverpool over a lack of playing time. 'Look, if I had it my way, I'd be here for the rest of my career, it's as simple as that, I love everything about the club,' Elliott told The Anfield Wrap. 'But at the same time I kind of need to be selfish with myself and see what's best for me. 'I have big ambitions. I want to go to the World Cup. I want to keep being successful as a player. More Trending 'I think it's still something I need to review. I need to have a talk with everyone, really and review the situation because we've had many new players come in, so whether it blocks the path for me I'm not sure, it's something I need to decide and have a look at. 'My main focus is here now. At the moment I'm here for the season, as far as I'm aware, unless if anything changes, we have a busy pre-season, it's non-stop, I need to make sure I'm focus on that and just be ready for everything.' Elliott was one of England's standout performers at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship over the summer. He was crowned UEFA's official Player of the Tournament after scoring five goals in the competition from midfield.
