Liam Boyce bags quickfire treble to send Derry on their way past Treaty United

RTÉ News2 days ago
Liam Boyce bagged a hat-trick off the bench in just 25 minutes to put Derry City through to the next round of the Sports Direct FAI Cup.
With the game in Markets Field at a stalemate and fast approaching the hour mark, Boyce was summoned and ended up being the difference.
Derry City would likely have welcomed a cup tie after their most disappointing result of the season last week.
Their 2-0 defeat to Sligo Rovers really put a dampener on what had already been a mixed league campaign to date, but the allure of at least €650,000 in European money for winning this tournament might have been enough to merit its own independent focus.
The Candystripes were hardly blessed with an easy run in last year's renewal, so in a sense, a trip down to Limerick was probably a turn in their favour. Although their cup history against teams from the third city is mixed at best.
Perhaps their most famous meeting in cup competition came in the League Cup final in 2002, when a Brendan Hughes-captained Limerick FC, who had finished bottom of the second tier that year, lifted the trophy at the Brandywell, after winning 3-2 on penalties.
Now, the gap isn't quite as big as it was back then – and the fact that Derry City had to wait until 40 minutes into the game for an effort of note was more reflective of their pedestrian pace than the evolution of football on Shannonside.
But as the clock ticked towards 60 minutes with little joy, Tiernan Lynch was forced to act. He called out for the services of Boyce and, within two minutes, the former Northern Ireland international repaid in kind.
Michael Duffy lined up a corner from the right-hand side and his lofted cross found Boyce right on the penalty spot. The contact wasn't perfect, but it looped over Corey Chambers into the Treaty net.
Ten minutes later, the tie was over.
For all the good the hosts might have done in open play, they were undone once more from a set piece, as Michael Duffy's corner found Alex Bannon at the back post to nod into the bottom corner.
And the trifecta was completed five minutes later as another Duffy corner found Boyce, who'd barely been on the pitch a quarter of an hour.
The vocal home crowd at least had their moment to celebrate as their undisputed talisman Lee Devitt pulled one back with just over ten minutes to go.
But that would soon be ruled out when Boyce completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot, and Danny Mullen completed a rout that had looked highly unlikely only ten minutes beforehand.
Treaty United: Corey Chambers; Evan O'Connor, Robbie Lynch, Mark Walsh )eoing Martin, Ben Lynch; Steven Healy (Fionn Doherty, 89), Connor Wilson (Brian Cunningham, 65); Colin Conroy (Mark Byrne, Lee Devitt, Mark Murphy; Trpimir Vrljičak (Patrick Ferry, 77).
Derry City: Brian Maher; Alex Bannon, Mark Connolly, Sam Todd; Ronan Boyce (Robbie Benson, 77), Sadou Diallo, Adam O'Reilly, Shane Ferguson (Hayden Cann, 57); Gavin Whyte (Liam Boyce, 57), Dipo Akinyemi (Danny Mullen, 69), Michael Duffy (Adam Frizell, 77).

Two more medals for Ireland at European U23 Championships in Norway

IRELAND'S ANIKA THOMPSON and Eimear Maher bagged bronze medals to round out a memorable European U23 Championships in Norway. On the final day of competition in Bergen, 10000m champion Thompson climbed the podium again after finishing third in the 5000m and Maher medalled in the 1500m. Maher clocked 4:09.54 as she delivered a tactical masterclass and ran the race of her life in her first track championship for Ireland. 'I'm lost for words right now, I'm still processing it all,' the 24-year-old said said. Advertisement 'I was vomiting before the heats, I was so nervous, this was my first track champs. . . I worked for this, I wanted this, and I think I tried to enjoy it a lot more today, but it was easier because I had done it before. I'm absolutely delighted.' Turkey's Dilek Kocak won in 4:08.79, while Adele Gay of France took silver. Thompson, who became just the second ever Irish athlete to top the podium at the European U23 championships with 10000m glory on Friday, added to her medal haul in the 5000m. She ran 15:56.80, having hit the front early and led until 800m to go. 'I'm really quite tired, but I'm actually really happy,' said Thompson. 'I love having a race where I can give it my all and that was one of the hardest ones I have run, and I just love to leave it out there on the track. 'It's the joy I have of the sport of running, whether I win or lose, the greatest thing is that I'm healthy and I get to do this, I have a big smile on my face. 'My goal today was of course to get the double gold, but If I go for gold and I might end up with a bronze, so always go for the win and see where you end up after that.' Meanwhile, the men's 4x400m squad of Andrew Egan, Callum Baird, Joe Doody and David Mannion clocked a new national U23 record of 3:06.31 as they finished fifth. The women's 4x400m squad broke the national U23 record, clocking 3:34.81, and the men's 4x100m squad went close to doing similar in 39.83. Major championships debutant Anna Gavigan placed eighth in the discus with a best throw of 51.16m. Athletics Ireland heralded this as the most successful U23 European championship ever with five medals won, along with a 14th-place finish on the medal table. Nicola Tuthill (hammer throw silver) and Nick Griggs (5000m silver) were the other Irish medallists.

St Patrick's Athletic hit UCC for eight in FAI Cup clash as Longford strike late to sink Castlebar

The Saints have been struggling in front of goal domestically of late, having scored just one in six games before yesterday's clash against the Cork outfit, but Stephen Kenny's men eased to an 8-0 victory at Richmond Park, where Chris Forrester was among the goalscorers with a brace. It took St Pat's, who have lifted the FAI Cup twice in the last four years, just 19 minutes to find the breakthrough through an unfortunate Colm Murphy own-goal, before three strikes in five minutes from Forrester, Aidan Keena and Brandon Kavanagh just before the break firmly put the tie to bed. Kenny's men raced out of the blocks at the restart with Jake Mulraney finding the net just two minutes after being introduced, while Al-Amin Kazeem and Conor Carty also struck past the men from the Rebel County. Forrester bagged his second minutes after the hour mark as the Inchicore side eased their way into the third round, with the draw set for Tuesday afternoon. It may have been one-way traffic at Richmond Park but it certainly wasn't in Mayo, as Longford Town needed three late goals to avoid a shock and book their place in the third round after being pushed hard by non-league Castlebar Celtic, the First Division side eventually emerging with a 6-3 win. A remarkable first-half saw the sides each score three goals, with Longford's Daragh Murtagh netting a hat-trick while Mark Cunningham, Eoghan Hughes and ex-Sligo Rovers striker Jordan Loftus finding the net for the Connacht outfit. The tie was heading for extra-time with the score remaining at 3-3 going into the final 15 minutes, but the visitors hit three late goals through a Dean George double either side of Francis Campbell's goal to ensure their name was in the hat for the next round. Wayne Groves' side have won the FAI Cup just twice in their history, in 2003 and 2004, with their last final appearance coming in 2007. The victories by St Pat's and Longford meant that every League of Ireland side progressed to the third round of the FAI Cup this weekend.

Longford Town progressed to the second round of the Sports Direct FAI Cup at the expense of a brave Castlebar Celtic outfit, emerging 6-3 winners at Celtic Park. A big crowd at the Mayo venue witnessed six first-half goals. Town's Daragh Murtagh bagged a hat-trick, while Mark Cunningham, Eoghan Hughes and former Sligo Rovers striker Jordan Loftus were on target for the home side to go in 3-3 at the break. The Connacht side defended stoutly in the second period but Longford eventually broke them down in the final 15 minutes, scoring three times. Dean George slid the ball under Stefan Hester on 75 minutes, while Francis Campbell hit a fifth in the final minute of normal time.
