Palmer double fires Chelsea past PSG to Club World Cup glory

Chelsea's English midfielder Cole Palmer poses with the Golden Ball trophy during the award ceremony for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 champions. Photo: FRANCK FIFE / AFP Cole Palmer produced a scintillating first-half masterclass as Chelsea demolished a flat Paris St Germain 3-0 to win a one-sided Club World Cup final in New Jersey. The English attacking midfielder scored twice and provided an assist for Joao Pedro in a devastating display in the revamped tournament's decider that left the European and French champions, who finished with 10 men, shell-shocked. After a stunning season, PSG were heavy favourites, while Chelsea arrived in the U.S. after winning Europe's third-tier Conference League and on the back of a domestic campaign in which they just managed a top-four Premier League finish. Prior to the match, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said he was expecting a "game of chess" against PSG coach Luis Enrique, but what transpired was a quick checkmate for the Italian who gave a tactical masterclass. Chelsea, who won the 2021 Club World Cup in its previous format, struck first in the 22nd minute when PSG fullback Nuno Mendes gifted possession to Malo Gusto. While his initial effort was blocked by Mendes, Gusto collected the rebound and found Palmer unmarked in the middle and the midfielder made no mistake, slotting a tidy finish just inside the left post. Palmer doubled the lead after the 30th-minute cooling break with a goal of sublime quality. Latching onto a precise through ball from Levi Colwill, he cut inside before faking a pass to dummy a defender and firing into the bottom-left corner. Palmer then turned provider, running up the channel before finding Joao Pedro, who took the ball in his stride and beat the offside trap before chipping his finish beautifully over keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. PSG's misery was completed when Joao Neves was sent off for pulling Marc Cucurella's hair in the 83rd minute, as PSG's players grew in frustration as the match progressed. The encounter turned ill-tempered at the end, with players going at each other after the final whistle, but the flare-ups quickly dissipated as Chelsea's players went to celebrate with their fans. -Reuters

Kiwi golfer wins debut event on Legends Tour

Photo: Wellington golfer Mark Brown has won his first event on the seniors tour tour in Europe. Brown has come from behind to score a two shot victory in the Swiss Seniors Open. The 50-year-old started the final round a shot off the lead. Chasing 36-hole leader Robert Coles, Brown maintained composure down the stretch and went ahead with birdies on the 15th and 16th holes. A par on the 17th for Brown allowed him to head down the 18th with a two-shot lead and he was able to hold on to become the first debut winner on the Legends Tour since Australian Scott Hend in 2013. "It's amazing," said Brown, "I really didn't know what to expect this week, so we've all just had a blast. We've had a fantastic week, and what a way to finish today. "I stayed pretty patient. I felt like the scoring was going to be pretty low today. There's hardly any wind, so I just needed to be patient, especially on the front nine. I managed to make a few birdies on that back nine coming home, which was really the key. Winning is never easy, so I had the heart rate going coming up 18. He pockets $93,000 for the win and moves him to 20th in the Legends' standings. The win is Brown's 12th internationally and second in Europe, adding to his co-sanctioned European Tour and PGA of Tour of Australasia win at the 2008 Johnnie Walker Classic. It follows his April 2025 win on the Charles Tour at the Muriwai Open. The Legends Tour heads next to the UK and Sunningdale Golf Club, Berkshire for the Senior Open on 24 July.

Sammie Maxwell bounces back from crashes, puncture to win World Cup mountainbike event

Sammie Maxwell celebrates victory in Andorra. Photo: Supplied / Decathlon Ford Racing New Zealand mountainbiker Sammie Maxwell has had a remarkable win in the latest UCI World Cup cross-country round in Andorra. She bounced back from two crashes and a puncture to claim the win at Pal Arinsal and extend her lead in the season standings. Maxwell, riding for Decathlon Ford, came off her bike twice on the rock descent after leading early and then lost time because of a puncture which resulted in a rear wheel change. There were plenty of crashes and punctures on a tough course, with energy-sapping climbs high up in the Pyrenees. Maxwell moved her way back to the leading group and waited for her best opportunity taking the lead on the final lap, winning by nine seconds from Alessandra Keller of Switzerland with Sweden's Jenny Rissveds third, after the pair led the attack along with Italian Martina Berta for much of the race. "You try to win a World Cup, you have to attack. No-one is going to let you have it," said Maxwell, a Paris Olympian who is in her first season at elite level. "It was all out. I I felt strong but I kept making silly mistakes on the downhills. I just realised I needed a bit of room for myself to take my own lines. I told myself it is at altitude, if you attack up that first climb, you are going to be out of it by the time you get to the back because I learnt that the hard way last year,'' she said. "Around the back on the last lap my whole body was screaming." She dedicated her win to injured team-mate Greta Seiwald. "Greta, that was for you,'' an exhausted Maxwell said as she dismounted her bike. Maxwell had the fastest two lap in the race - the first and last. She had a 335-point lead before the race and extended that to 445 with the win, with Nicole Koller of Switzerland in second place and Rissveds third. There are four rounds remaining, with the next one at Haute-Savoie in France in three weeks' time.
