Samsung may build Qualcomm's most advanced chip ever for the Galaxy S26 series

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority
TL;DR Samsung could reportedly fabricate one variant of the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 for Qualcomm.
While the normal chip would be made with a 3nm TSMC process, Samsung's could be a 2nm chip.
This 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 may debut with the Galaxy S26.
There's arguably no single component that more influences how a smartphone comes together than the choice of its system-on-a-chip (SoC). And while a phone is a whole lot more than just how fast it can crunch numbers, the decision around which SoC to use influences everything from the screens and cameras a handset can support, to how power-efficient the phone will be. Right now, Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips dominate popular Android hardware, with the Snapdragon 8 Elite powering many of this year's best phones. But if this latest report we're hearing turns out to be accurate, the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 could shake up the SoC industry in some surprising ways.
Qualcomm designs its Snapdragon chips, but when it comes to actually manufacturing them, it has historically relied upon fabrication partners like TSMC and Samsung. But in recent years, its highest-end flagship chips have exclusively been produced by TSMC. That's included the Snapdragon 8 Elite, built on TSMC's 3nm process.
We've recently been talking about the next step forward, and when we might expect to see 2nm chips start to become commercially viable. That's included a rumor that Google could get an early start with a 2nm Tensor G6 chip for the Pixel 11, made by TSMC. While at the time we hadn't heard of earlier plans for a competing 2nm chip, that's now changing.
Robert Triggs / Android Authority
According to South Korea's Business Post, Qualcomm could be planning something a little strange for the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2. Much like we saw with the S25 series and its special Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy chips, Samsung could again be getting a special edition of Qualcomm's next chip with a few exclusive upgrades. But this time around, Qualcomm could actually tap Samsung to fabricate the chip itself.
The reason why that move would be particularly interesting is because Samsung has its own promising 2nm process, and industry sources expect that this version of the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 (referred to internally as 'Kaanapali S') could be manufactured using it. And if those indeed end up in the Galaxy S26 family, it could be Samsung, rather than Google, that first puts these kind of next-gen chips in your hand.
Yields have reported already risen from 30% to 40% for Samsung's 2nm process, and while that's still a bit below where companies target for profitability, if that number keeps moving in the right direction, Samsung could be in good shape in just a few more months. The company's also been looking at 1.4nm chips, but has supposedly delayed those plans in order to further refine its 2nm workflow.
Ultimately, which company is first with a phone running a 2nm chip won't come down to more than bragging rights, and regardless of who wins, everyone else is going to catch up in short order. But that doesn't make us any less excited to think about the tiny atomic-scale places these processors are going.

These are the best airlines of 2025 – and no US carrier made the list. Here's why.

Skytrax recently released its World's Best Airline Awards of 2025 – also called the "Oscars of the aviation industry" – with Qatar Airways scoring the top spot for the ninth time and no U.S. airlines making the list. Since 1999, the aviation rankings organization has determined the annual awards based on results from the largest airline passenger satisfaction survey. For this year's list, the global survey was conducted from September 2024 to May 2025, with the winners announced on June 17. "We welcomed back a large number of previous winners and were also delighted to see new faces and airlines represented here today," said Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax, in a statement. "As is indicated by so many former winning airlines being present, quality consistency is clearly well recognised by customers when they vote for these airlines." Not only did Qatar Airways win World's Best Airline, but also Best Airline in the Middle East, World's Best Business Class and Best Business Class Airline Lounge. "This recognition is far more than an award, it is a celebration of the passion, precision and purpose that defines who we are as an airline," Qatar Airways Group CEO Badr Mohammed Al-Meer said in the release. Airlines based in the Middle East and Asia dominated the top 10, with many repeat winners like Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Emirates, while no U.S. carriers made it into the top 20. Here are the top 20 airlines of 2025, according to Skytrax: Qatar Airways Singapore Airlines Cathay Pacific Emirates ANA All Nippon Airways Turkish Airlines Korean Air Air France Japan Airlines Hainan Airlines Swiss International Air Lines EVA Air British Airways Qantas Airways Lufthansa Virgin Atlantic Saudi Arabian Airlines STARLUX Airlines Air Canada Iberia U.S. carriers were absent from a majority of the Skytrax awards. However, two made it onto lists: Delta Air Lines scored the Best Airline Staff Service in North America, and JetBlue Airways was the sixth Best Regional Airline for 2025. (Regional airline awards are for those with mostly domestic flights and international ones up to six hours.) "This isn't just a ranking problem. It's a reputation and business problem," said Anton Radchenko, aviation expert and founder of air passenger rights company AirAdvisor. "The reason U.S. airlines are failing to crack the top 10 isn't because they're incapable; it's because they're prioritizing margins over meaningful passenger experience." A 2024 report by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations found major U.S. airlines generating billions in revenue from charging "sky high junk fees," such as checked bags and seat assignments, to passengers. Between 2018 and 2023, seat reservation fees made a combined $12.4 billion for American, Delta, United, Frontier and Spirit. "U.S. carriers need to understand that international passengers and, increasingly, Americans too, expect more than just an on-time flight," said Radchenko, adding that they should invest in improving the traveler experience instead. "Travelers may not buy tickets based on awards, but they feel the difference, and they vote every day with their wallets and loyalty, he continued. "Until U.S. airlines close the gap on these fundamentals, we'll continue to see them locked out of the global top tier.' Google is sunsetting Chrome updates for Android 8 and 9

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Google announced it will no longer be updating Chrome for users on Android 8.0 and Android 9.0. Even though Chrome will continue to work on their phones, users will not get updates beyond Chrome version 138. Starting around August 5th, Chrome version 139 will need Android 10 or newer to keep getting Chrome updates. Google announced that it will stop bringing updates for Chrome versions running on Android 8.0 (Oreo) and Android 9.0 (Pie) in the next few weeks. On its support page, Google explained that Chrome version 138 will be the last update available to the above Android users, following which they may need to upgrade to Android 10.0 to receive Chrome version 139, which is scheduled to release on August 5. Phones that run on Oreo and Pie were typically released in the mid-to-late 2010s. And according to the latest Android distribution chart, approximately 9.8% phones are still running on Android versions Oreo and Pie. This includes some of the first-ever Google Pixel phones, up to the Pixel 3XL, Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus, OnePlus 5/5T, and so on. In contrast, about 10.2% of phones run on Android 10 (Q), which means that Chrome will likely be compatible on this Android version for the next few years at least, based on how long Android 10 remains widely used. That said, Google confirmed that Chrome will still continue to function as usual on Android 8 and 9, but won't be receiving any new updates going forward. Google recommends that users on these older versions update their devices to Android 10.0 or newer if possible. If you're someone who is unsure if this change might impact you, here's how to check your Android version or update your device. Head to your device's Settings menu under "About phone" or "System updates." That said, companies usually stop updating older versions of the software as they focus on bringing better features to new versions. With the recent rollout of stable Android 16, introducing features like Material 3 Expressive, it is recommended to upgrade to a device that supports some of the newer Android versions to continue to receive timely updates, even though Android 10 is currently the minimum requirement.
