A NEW milk vending machine has been installed at a petrol station in the Lake District.
The Ann Forshaw's Milk Shed, launched at the SPAR Derwent store on Keswick's Penrith Road, will see milk delivered daily from Alston Dairy at Longridge, near Preston, the home of the Ann Forshaw's brand.
SPAR Derwent is the second Cumbrian SPAR store to launch a Milk Shed after SPAR Milnthorpe in November last year.
It dispenses pasteurised and non-homogenised fresh milk in 500ml or one litre servings, priced at £1 and £1.60 respectively.
Milkshakes are also available at £1.80 for a 500ml size or £2.80 for a one litre serving.
They are in five flavours of chocolate, strawberry, banana, vanilla, and salted caramel.

February half term will also see a showcase of retro throwback flavours, and these include Cream Soda, Parma Violet, Cola, Lime, Candy Floss, and Mixed Berry.
Fiona Drummond, company stores director at James Hall & Co. Ltd, owner of SPAR Derwent, said: 'Wherever we launch an Ann Forshaw's Milk Shed, our SPAR customers love the concept, and we have high hopes that our latest launch will be lapped up by the community in Keswick.
'We are also rapidly rolling out Milk Sheds across Cumbria as we believe that the concept and the products are right for the market. We are very excited to launch Milk Sheds at our company-owned SPAR stores in Bowness, Maryport, and Whitehaven soon to bring a point of difference to our offer.

$1.5 billion acquisition of Herb Chambers auto group is complete

Advertisement AGRICULTURE Farm and fisherman bankruptcies hit five-year high amid low prices and high costs After years of low crop prices and rising costs, America's small farmers are facing a crisis brought on by higher interest rates, Trump's trade war, and dramatically reduced demand from China. In the first half of the year, small-business bankruptcies filed by farmers and fisherman hit the highest number since 2020, which was the tail end of a similar cycle of low-prices. Farm debt is expected to hit $561.8 billion in this year, a record high, according to the US Department of Agriculture. 'We've had three years of tough sledding here where breakevens are at or below cost,' said Brett Bruggeman, the chief operating officer at Land O'Lakes Inc., one of the biggest farmer-owned cooperatives in the United States. Soybean, corn, and pork producers have been among the hardest hit farmers in recent years as China began buying more from competitors in Brazil and other parts of Latin America. Before President Trump's first term in office in 2017, US farmers dominated the Chinese import market, said Joseph A. Peiffer, with the Iowa-based law firm Ag & Business Legal Strategies. Today Brazil occupies that position, he said. 'Once you lose a customer it's awful hard to get them back,' he said. Firms that specialize in restructuring farm debt have seen an increase in business, lawyers said. Land O'Lakes said its members are seeing dwindling cash reserves and growing concerns about the 2026 crop year. More new growers have been applying to a Land O'Lakes program that helps finance crop inputs like seeds and nutrients. — BLOOMBERG NEWS Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up SODA Advertisement Coca-Cola could turn to cane sugar. But can US growers meet demand? After four decades drinking Coca-Cola sweetened with corn syrup, Americans are going to get the chance to buy the soda made from domestic cane sugar. But whether US farmers can meet that demand is unclear. Coca-Cola Co. said Tuesday it will launch the new Coke variety this fall, a week after President Trump said the company had agreed to start using the sweetener. The move is hardly an outlandish idea. In fact, Coke sold in other countries like Mexico is sweetened with cane sugar. And the company relied on cane sugar before switching to high fructose corn syrup around 1980. While the company will still be using corn syrup for original Coke, the addition of a domestic cane-based soda could help growers in Louisiana and Florida at a time when demand has been slow. However, a sustained bump in demand — especially if other companies follow Coca-Cola's lead — risks outstripping homegrown availability. US cane only makes up about 30 percent of overall domestic sugar supplies, according to the US Department of Agriculture. The rest comes from imports, which were about 2.2 million metric tons for the 2025-26 season, and American-grown sugar beets that perform better in colder climates. A sugar supply shortfall would likely mean more cane imports from Mexico and Brazil, exposing American companies and consumers to higher prices just as they are facing market upheaval from Trump's tariffs. Cane sugar is more expensive than high-fructose corn syrup. On top of that, long-standing import tariffs mean US raw cane sugar futures are already more than double what the rest of the world pays. That price gap widened to a record on Tuesday. — BLOOMBERG NEWS Advertisement HOUSING MARKET US home sales slow again as prices keep pushing record highs Sales of previously owned US homes fell in June to a nine-month low as potential buyers continued to bristle at record prices and high borrowing costs. Contract closings decreased 2.7 percent in June to an annualized rate of 3.93 million, a report from the National Association of Realtors showed Wednesday. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg expected a 4 million sales rate. The median sales price increased 2 percent in June from a year ago to $435,300. Home prices continue to rise even after a recent pickup in inventory. 'Multiple years of undersupply are driving the record high home price. Home construction continues to lag population growth,' Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, said in a statement. 'High mortgage rates are causing home sales to remain stuck at cyclical lows.' Yun said on a call with reporters that it's typical to see high home prices this time of year because families want to move before the school year begins. The nation's home-resale market is likely to limp along for the foreseeable future as would-be buyers contend with mortgage rates hovering near 7 percent and prices that are up almost 50 percent from five years ago. While home listings have increased this year, many owners are hesitant to give up mortgages secured at much lower rates. — BLOOMBERG NEWS Advertisement RIDE-HAILING Uber to test program to match female riders and drivers Uber Technologies Inc. is piloting a new ride type in the United States that will match female riders and drivers, expanding access to a safety feature it already offers in some international markets. The service will launch in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Detroit over the next few weeks, the company said in a statement Wednesday. Riders will see a new on-demand ride option called 'Women Drivers' alongside the existing UberX, Comfort, UberXL, and Black offerings. Customers can reserve such a trip in advance, or set their preference in the app settings to increase the likelihood of being matched with a woman driver. Female drivers, who make up about 1 in 5 of Uber's US driver population, can similarly choose that preference in the settings of their driver app. Drivers' eligibility for the program will be based on the gender listed on their license. For riders, it will be determined by their first name or whether they specified their gender as female on their Uber profile. 'It's about giving women more choice, more control, and more comfort when they ride and drive,' said Camiel Irving, vice president of operations in the US and Canada. Cities that have a bigger population of women drivers will be the ones that get the feature sooner, she said, but added that the three options are designed to allow different ways of matching without compromising wait times and service availability. The company also sees the option as a way to attract more female drivers to the platform. — BLOOMBERG NEWS Advertisement

The protein boom is only beginning: Morning Brief

They're cramming it into everything now. It's in pancakes and pasta, chips and cereal. Plant-based or harvested from the farm, it's the macro(nutrient) of the moment. And slices of corporate America are not so subtly asking: Have you met your protein goal today? Protein Doritos sounds like the ideal mashup for the gym rat snack fiends of the world. But it's not as farfetched a product as you might think. Pepsi (PEP) plans to unveil new protein offerings for some of its Frito-Lay and Quaker brands, part of a broader shift to enhance their products and strip away artificial flavors and colors. (But what is a tasty Cheeto if not a brazenly synthetic delight?) Pepsi's intended relaunch and extension of popular brands is a reaction to a consumer base on the hunt for healthier, cleaner options. Executives across the food and beverage world see a potential crisis unfolding. As demand for legacy products wavers, companies are reaching for new lines (like fiber, prebiotics, hydration, energy, and protein) to support the core business. Sign up for the Yahoo Finance Morning Brief By subscribing, you are agreeing to Yahoo's Terms and Privacy Policy "Protein is clearly a subsegment in our food and beverages categories that is growing fast," said PepsiCo CEO Ramon Laguarta on an earnings call last week. "Consumers are adopting protein solutions in the diet at a pace that was not the case a few months back, a few years back." Coca-Cola (KO), which reported on Tuesday, is undergoing its own notable evolution. Earlier this year, the company came out with a prebiotic soda brand, Simply Pop, an answer to the initial success of soda alternatives like Olipop and Poppi. Coca-Cola's Fairlife line of lactose-free, ultra-filtered milk and protein shakes (a fitness influencer staple) is touting double-digit volume growth. Coke CFO John Murphy told my colleague Brooke DiPalma that protein is another representation of consumers looking for products that help them in their daily lives, have fewer calories, or are perceived as healthier. Coca-Cola also confirmed it'll offer a Coke variant sweetened with US cane sugar this fall. A confluence of factors has amped up the recommendations and ability to up your protein intake. Strength training is having a moment, in a sort of vindication of gym bro fitness culture but also an expansion and reimagining of it. More young people, older people, and women are skipping (or supplementing) the treadmill and stationary bike and heading to the weight rack. Big, commercial gyms are swapping out cardio machines to make space for pumping iron. Planet Fitness (PLNT) announced plans at the start of the year to install new plate-loaded strength equipment — like bench presses and hack squats — into all of its more than 2,700 clubs by the end of 2025. Logically, protein follows to help realize the gains. Social media reflects and amplifies these trends. Popular influencers, like some of their Hollywood counterparts, are sporting more muscular physiques: wider backs, denser arms, and thicker legs. And they're touting the advantages of higher protein consumption as a method to change the way people look and feel. You have to eat more protein, they proclaim, to grow a dump truck. The opposite is true too: You generally need to actually train to put protein to work — and we may all be going overboard. Otherwise, you're just eating protein aspirationally. The explosion of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs from Eli Lilly (LLY) and Novo Nordisk (NVO) is another reason why consumers are seeing more protein-enriched foods on grocery aisles. As appetite-suppressed Ozempic and Wegovy users eat less and drop pounds, it isn't just body fat they're shedding. People in a calorie deficit generally lose fat and muscle, so healthcare providers advise patients to eat more protein to help preserve their muscle mass. And as a diet trend, the pro-protein movement is also just that, "pro" something, instead of the carb villainization of Atkins of the 2000s or low-fat of the 90s and before. For food and snack companies, it's an opportunity to capitalize on that turbocharged demand by providing something that's acceptable to eat, tackling health through consumption instead of austerity. Will Coca-Cola's new cane sugar Coke be sold in Canada – and is it really healthier?

After U.S. President Donald Trump announced his preference for real cane sugar in Coke, the American soft drink giant confirmed it will bring a new version of the popular soft drink to U.S. consumers this fall. In its latest earnings report, the Coca-Cola Company revealed it plans to offer a new Coca-Cola drink sweetened with U.S. cane sugar. It's unclear if the product will match the formula for Mexican Coke, which already uses the natural sugar. The Coca-Cola Company has confirmed it will roll out the new formula this fall. 'As part of its ongoing innovation agenda, this fall in the United States, the company plans to launch an offering made with U.S. cane sugar to expand its Trademark Coca-Cola product range,' Coca-Cola said in a news release . 'This addition is designed to complement the company's strong core portfolio and offer more choices across occasions and preferences.' It's unclear whether the new formulation will be available in Canada. Metroland reached out to Coke Canada Bottling, the company responsible for making, distributing and selling Coca-Cola products in Canada. We will update this article when we receive a response. According to the ingredient list on Coke sold in Canada, the beverage is made with sugar/glucose-fructose. For now, Canadians looking for a cane sugar Coke can pick up an imported version of the soft drink, although it may cost a little more. Coke's Mexican version, known as Coca Cola de México, is made with with natural flavours and cane sugar, according to . It doesn't contain high-fructose corn syrup. According to , Mexican Coke is available in 355-ml bottles at Walmart, Metro and Loblaw stores in Ontario, including Valu-Mart, Real Canadian Superstore, Wholesale Club and Fortinos. The four-pack ranges in price from about $7.50 to $9, depending on where you purchase it. Diabetes Canada says all added sugars — including white, brown or cane sugars, corn syrup, honey, molasses or maple syrup — are absorbed the same way in the body and have the same impact on blood sugar. Diabetes Canada said they all provide the same number of calories and are low in nutrients. Therefore, there is no advantage for people with diabetes to choose one over another. Focusing on the total amount of any added sugar rather than the type is key, Diabetes Canada adds online . Hamilton Health Sciences notes children should drink water when they are thirsty or choose low-fat milk (skim or one per cent) more often (two to four servings a day). Regardless of whether the drink contains refined sugar or cane sugar, parents should limit the amount of soda, juice, fruit drinks and ice teas kids consume to no more than two drinks a week, the hospital networks says. Trump announced his desire for a cane sugar Coke in a July 16 post on his Truth Social platform and said Coca-Cola had agreed to switch from high-fructose corn syrup. 'I'd like to thank all of those in authority at Coca-Cola,' Trump wrote at the time. 'This will be a very good move by them — You'll see. It's just better!' The move won't impact Trump's favourite Coca-Cola beverage, Diet Coke, which is sweetened with aspartame . In a news release announcing its second quarter earning statement, the Coca-Cola Company said its net revenues grew one per cent to US$12.5 billion during the second quarter of 2025. The company credited initiatives like the relaunch of its 'Share a Coke' campaign, which includes personalized bottles featuring over 30,000 names tailored to local markets. 'Amid a shifting external landscape in the second quarter, the ability of our system to stay both focused and flexible enabled us to stay on course in the first half of the year,' James Quincey, The Coca-Cola Company's chair and CEO, said in the release. 'We continue to execute with a clear intent on our priorities and are confident in our trajectory to deliver on our updated 2025 guidance and longer-term objectives.' But Coca-Cola's signature product, the original formula Coca-Cola, has experienced a slight decline in sales. Sales of Coca-Cola's original trademark product fell one per cent over the second quarter of 2025, as growth in Europe, the Middle East and Africa was more than offset by a decline in Latin America. The company said sales of Coca-Cola Zero Sugar grew 14 per cent across all geographic operating segments. The sugar-free Coke Zero has achieved double-digit volume growth for four consecutive quarters, the company added, signalling a potential shift in consumer desire away from products with high-fructose corn syrup. The product is sweetened with aspartame and acesulfame potassium instead of sugar. Error! Sorry, there was an error processing your request. There was a problem with the recaptcha. Please try again.
