Greece arrests gang smuggling cocaine-infused leather from Latin America
They said the method used by the gang signalled a shift in methods for smuggling the drug from South America to Europe.
Eleven people have been arrested so far, including nationals form Bolivia and Spain, after police monitored the suspects for months following a tip-off by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the officials said.
The gang had set up a laboratory in Athens to extract the cocaine from the leather, which had been dried with salt, they said.
Police confiscated at least 300 packages with salt mixed with cocaine and estimated the total amount of cocaine in the lab to be more than 800 kg (1,764 pounds).
The suspects are expected to appear before a prosecutor to respond to the charges on Friday.
This is Greece's second case involving cocaine poured into garments. In late May, police dismantled a ring which was smuggling clothes soaked into liquid cocaine from Ecuador.

Man arrested in connection with 5 sex assaults around Health Sciences Centre
A man has been arrested in connection with a string of random sexual assaults against a teen and several women this week in and around Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre. Police said a 28-year-old man was taken into custody Thursday night after he was arrested on Spence Street just blocks from where the assaults occurred one night earlier. He has been charged with five counts of sexual assault, one count of sexual interference, three counts of assault and one count of carrying a concealed prohibited weapon, device or ammunition, a news release from police said Friday. The Manitoba Nurses Union said Thursday that long-standing safety and security concerns among HSC staff persist in the core-area hospital, including in the hospital tunnel. Police previously said officers were called Wednesday around 8 p.m. about reports of four random sexual assaults on women around the HSC campus area. The first, around 7 p.m., was against a teenage girl walking near Elgin Avenue and Sherbrook Street. The second happened around 7:12 p.m. A woman who works at HSC was walking east on William Avenue near Furby Street when she was grabbed from behind and sexually assaulted. Another woman who works at HSC was walking in the hospital tunnel system when she was sexually assaulted around 7:42 p.m. Around 7:45 p.m., yet another woman employed at HSC was sexually assaulted and fell to the ground while she was walking south on Emily Street at McDermot Avenue. A fifth woman later reported being sexually assaulted that night on Notre Dame Avenue between Sherbrook and Langside streets, police said Friday when they confirmed an arrest had been made. The man remains in custody. The police sex crimes unit continues to investigate. Escaped lion attacks woman and 2 children on busy street in Pakistan, video shows
An escaped pet lion chased a woman and two children down a busy street in Pakistan's Lahore, police said Friday, with dramatic footage showing the big cat leaping a wall before pouncing on them. CCTV footage released by the police showed the lion jumping the barrier around its home and pursuing a woman carrying her shopping on Thursday night. The lion jumped on her back, knocking her to the ground, the footage showed. A police report quoted the father as saying the lion then turned to his five-year-old and seven-year-old children, and clawed their arms and faces. All three were taken to hospital but were not in a critical condition. The owners who ran out of the house were "amused to see their lion attack" the passersby, the father added in the report. Police said Friday that they had arrested three men. "The suspects fled from the spot, taking the lion with them. They were arrested within 12 hours of the incident," the office of the Deputy Inspector General Operations in Lahore told AFP. The lion, an 11-month-old male, has been confiscated by police and sent to a wildlife park. Officials at the facility said that the animal appears to be in good health. Keeping exotic animals, especially big cats, as pets has long been seen as a sign of privilege and power in Punjab, the most populous province of the country. In December 2024, an adult lion escaped from its enclosure in another neighborhood of Lahore, terrorizing residents before being shot dead by a security guard. The incident prompted the provincial government to pass new laws regulating the sale, purchase, breeding and ownership of big cats. The law now requires owners to obtain licenses for the animals which are barred from being kept in residential areas. Breeders have to pay a hefty fee for registration, while farms have to be a minimum of 10 acres in size. Big cats are imported and bred across Pakistan, seen as symbols of wealth and power to the elite that own them. Last year, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, which rules the government, banned supporters from bringing lions — the symbol of the party — to political rallies. In late December, Pakistani YouTube star Rajab Butt was gifted a lion cub on his wedding day, and authorities quickly took notice when they saw video of the animal on social media. The next month, Butt managed to avoid jail after promising a judge to upload animal rights videos for a year. The attack in Pakistan comes one month after a lion killed a businessman at a luxury lodge in the remote northwest of Namibia. In April, a lion killed a 14-year-old girl outside Kenya's capital in a ranch to the south of Nairobi National Park.

13-year-old cyclist taken to hospital after being struck by car in Kitchener
A 13-year-old is in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after being hit by a car Thursday night in Kitchener. Police were called to the intersection of Westmount Road E. and Ottawa Street S. just before 10 p.m. for reports a Toyota Corolla had hit a cyclist. The teen was transported to a hospital outside the region with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Toyota Corolla, a 23-year-old man from Kitchener, was unharmed. As part of the investigation, police closed the intersection for several hours. Police say the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
